[ESL - FB1] El Rubi

Monezterell shipyards proudly presents:

The Barquentine El Rubi. Built in the shipyards of Elysabethtown, she has been sitting in ordinary (= no masts, no sails, no rigging) for far to long. It is finally time to set her off to her own journey. Well, lets keep our talkin' short let this ship go swim!

Just these two pictures for now, I'm sorry, I had so much to take pictures of today.
This ship has been sitting on my desk for several months without sails, which was annoying me for long enough. You may notice a strong similarity to the Esmeralda; these ships were started at the same time:

Will be licensed as a 4T2 as it seems to be a little bit to small for a 5T. As it could house up to 12 guns it could be refitted to be a 4A as well.

Legostone, another fine ship from your shipyard! The view from the stern makes me think she is definitely a trader, looking like she's sitting low in water laden with gold. But the profile looks quite sleek. And we always need more traders, so 4T2 sounds good to me.

I like the netting at the bow, and I always like the fact that you build your masts. I'm still relying on prefab masts, but will transition eventually. Your ships continue to prod me to get on with the next generation of ship designs from my shipyard.

Very nice ship, LegoStone, the colors are quite neat, and the net at the front is a great touch as well!   I do think the lines of the Esmeralda are a bit more flowing and better, but this is certainly one of your best goes at rigging and sails yet - it looks quite taunt, and there isn't hardly any string sticking out at the ends   Great job, keep it up!

Yeah, the Esmeralda is indeed a bit smoother - this one is a bit to short in the middle I think... The string not sticking out in this one was easy - no string in the sails. I don't want to make my sails useless by cutting of too much, and am still scared about doing it. But I dare to say that the rigging of my ships since the Green Winds (my bigger Schooner) has been quite solid. If the weather tomorrow is good I may try to take pictures of all my ships that are currently build up to show that again.

Great looking barquantine, LS. I basically think her hull is very good, and have only two comments. One is her buttcheeks aft :P I don't think I've ever seen anything like that on a real ship ;) Second, there is something about her curve that's a bit off. Die to a steep curve in the middle, you end up having to give her a counter-curve around bow and stern, which I find breaks the harmony a bit. It looks a little like she is melting around her ends. ;)

It is a rather minor nitpick though, as she is a great looking vessel all in all. I really like her cabin and those stern davids are a great detail.

The standing rigging is very good too, but while I like the sail plan, the paper sails need to be cute differently than cloth sails to really work. As paper is flat and stiff, cutting it in straight lines makes them look highly unnatural. Instead, try cutting them in a curve (my Athena can serve as an example), as it makes them look alot more like sails filled and stretched by the wind.

My comments aside, your ships are always an inspiration, and I really like how you experiment with different sail plans, details, hull techniques, etc. Keep up the good work!

Oh yeah, I was hoping nobody would notice them... I believe they are there because I didn't have more brown 2x1x2 slopes, so I had to use 2x1x3 slopes instead and the lower part of the stern got too long. They annoy me too, but I can't get rid of them without changing the lower part of the stern drastically. And now that you mention that part with the hull, now it is gonna annoy me too. Damn you!

The sails - I had just finished building Nuestra El Rojo La Oscurida, La Raya Venenosa and the Dark Spirit and remembered that I still had this one sitting there, for 2 months without sails. These sails on this one are really low effort compared to all (!) of my other ships - they literally took 20 minutes total, I might redo them at some point.

Thanks! I really like experimenting with the different hull techniques (although I'm currently favouring my Sebeus-Kabel-Dunkleosteus-Kurigan hybrid hulls(lets make that a name). And hey, just building the same ship every time would be boring (although I would guess one could improve quickly that way...)
