When you build a set or a Moc for the first time. Do you personally make sure that every piece is lined up a certain way. Like every technic pin is turned the same way.

When you use a certain piece do you make it so you use one type of the piece's mold. Like the jumper piece where the bottom is changed on newer versions

Or do you just build it without a care for part symmetry.

I personally am very OCD with how parts are lined up in sets/mocs and make sure to only use one type of a parts' mold.

I am the same way! But in addition to those I also align the "LEGO" on the studs! And the "LEGO" on trans parts. Also I hide the sprue marks. And on some tiles you can see the sprue marks on the top smooth part, so all of those have to go the same direction.

Reading this, I have to admit that I build pretty dirty. Usually I completely disregard different batches/types of parts, except where it really shows, or stability reasons require newish parts with good clutch power. Otherwise I like that extra level of texture different ages and makes of parts can create.

I am pretty Lego OCD, but in other ways. I record the date in which I add anything to my collection. I don't mix parts in between minifigs or sets, and I distinguish identical minifigs so I know where they came from.

I acknowledge differences in types of the same piece, or old and new greys, and then I utilize them.

I made a MOC where I used Old Dark Grey jumper plates in a certain portion, whereas the rest were New Dark Grey, because that's where I felt the vehicle would weather most in my fictional Lego world.

That's actually pretty smart and resourceful. I wouldn't call that OCD. :sweet:

Sometimes I take a moment to cover the pips/molding marks/whatever they're called.

I think this describes my building. I try to make things look nice and being sturdy is important, but lining up slots and names on studs... No.

I should have clarified:

I was answering the original question in the form of a personal rebuttal. I am not OCD about brick variations. I embrace them.

I am halfway OCD I guess, based on Takanuinuva's question that is...

I do line up the slots in Technic pins, but only when they are clearly visible.

I also mirror the parts as much as possible, for example when you building a chassis for a car, I make sure the slots of pins / parts are similar on left and right hand side.

I do not go so far as to look at the sprue marks though or line up the word "LEGO" of each brick / piece.

Well, I do the stuff mentioned above. I also tend to use pieces which aren't scratched and discolored.
Scratchwise you have to tilt a piece in the right light to even notice it sometimes...

Haha I should've known. Fair enough...

Every MOC I make the technic pins and bushing have the be lined up, always build using the same color pallet even though the insides will never been seen, and mirror my builds so each side has the same color.

Yep, same here!  The word LEGO can't be upside down or sideways, it has to be lined up just right! When I line pieces up side by side in a set, the word LEGO on all of them have to be facing in the same direction.

yes, totally agree.  I line up the Lego logo's in 2 axis, and the technic pins are always horizontal, or along the front to back plane when they are installed vertically,

Nope.  When I was a kid, I had OCD.  I would lock the door before I left home 16 times, checking the lock four times in four sets.  When I read about OCD behavior at the library (no Internet when I was a kid!), I made up my mind to not be a slave to the irrationality of it.  There's too many fun things and more important things to do in life than to be held hostage by irrational OCD behavior I told myself.

I used to call myself a LEGO purist with my MOCs, until I found out that my favorite building style and techniques were NASAL builds (Not Acceptable Stress Allowance Levels), in other words, would never, could never appear as a construction assembly in an official LEGO set.  So now, I relax, just like the great poet and philosopher Frankie (Goes To Hollywood) urged.

I take care of aligning the subtle mark that's on the surface of most of 2x2 tiles, as they tend to be visible in plain light; same for the mark at one end of most of 1x6 tiles. Same for other "marks" that I try to keep symmetrical (e.g. in the corner of the 2x2 window glass).

In the same way, the side of 1x2 & 2x2 tiles has an injection mark that I try to hide.

Back when I could see the tiny letters clearly, I would line up the LEGO on the studs so that they point in a similar direction.  Now my eyes nO See D.  :classic:

Although I don't do most of the things mentioned in this thread, I do try hard to match the instructions when it comes to pieces attached by 1 stud which are arbitrarily rotatable. I also try to line up all the flames or flags in a given build as if there is a breeze blowing a certain direction.

This is an awesome story. I'm not being sarcastic or joking this time, I really think that's an incredible thing, and I enjoyed reading it.

that's all.

I do that too!

I do mirror to keep MOCs symmetrical and try to hide even the tiniest imperfections such as separation marks.

My most obsessive behaviour when it comes to LEGO is never exposing my display collection or spare parts to sunlight (except when I'm deliberately resetting the colour of white pieces). My aversion to sunlight exposure is so strong that I only build at night and keep my collection is a windowless room.

Unlike some OCD-AFOLs I'm not a purist: I do use third party pieces. And I use LEGO anachronistically such as when I recreate this 1981 set. The front lights are supported by the newer, sturdier kind of modified 1 x 1 plate, not the thinner one from the early '80s.

When FIRST building, no.  I don't even care about the color of brick I'm using, the idea is only "there" for a short time so I just grab the bricks and put them together.  I mean I built a fire truck using black, white, orange, green & blue parts as well as red.  Only once I had it looking "right" did I go back and search for the parts in red and white.

Part of it is so I can keep the flow of my vision, another part is so my son can see that the color doesn't matter when free building.  If he wants to jam a bunch of 2x4 bricks together in the rudimentary shape of a dog then it's recognizable as a dog whether or not he uses just tan and white bricks or he uses the entire Lego color palette.  The important thing for me is to get the shape first and I'm so glad I don't have to worry about the habits others have mentioned in this thread

I used to be more so than I am now. Still not too bad...compared to some of you weirdos. I still keep my sets together sorted into plastic containers. I don't worry too much about mixing minifigs anymore, since having a town layout. Plus, lately I've been picking pieces out of sets to use in my town, 2x2 tiles mostly. I keep a list of what piece & number of them & which set they came from...so I can replace them later.
