BrickG Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 (edited) There's been plenty of one and dones lately. Alien Conquest and Pharaohs Quest to name a few. Monster Fighters seems to be in the same boat as well. Kingdoms had a wave and a half you could say. I have no numbers on any of these themes that were so short lived, but it seems to be the norm for Action themes of recent years. They didn't do well enough to stick around. If they did, they'd stick around. No way would Lego refuse money. :P I consider that not fully ideal. I guess it's what you consider a "failure". Lego and many people probably don't consider it to be so. But unless it sticks around I tend to think it wasn't that big of a success, otherwise it would have stayed. And because I'm pessimistic and evil, I call that a failure. (ignoring possible legit reasons, like trading for a new franchise which is what Castle did) EDIT: On a more positive note... (not mine) Suddenly I want Super Mario Lego. :) Edited January 22, 2013 by BrickG Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Nice Bowser! I could be wrong, but doesn't K'nex have the Nintendo license at the moment? I seem to remember seeing some Mario Kart-inspired sets at the store. Going back to the Jurassic Park conversation, my mind has been spinning on this a lot today. Is it possible that the Dino line was cut short on purpose? Meaning Lego was made aware of the greenlighting of JP4 and put the current dino sets on hold in favor of a JP theme in a few years? We can only hope, I suppose. Quote
Omicron Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I could be wrong, but doesn't K'nex have the Nintendo license at the moment? I seem to remember seeing some Mario Kart-inspired sets at the store. No they don't. They have a Mario license (Mario Kart specifically). -Omi Quote
Vindicare Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 They didn't do well enough to stick around. If they did, they'd stick around. No way would Lego refuse money. :P Ok...once again, do you have numbers to back up you saying they failed? Who's to say that isn't how LEGO does things? Introduce new Action themes each year. If you have the sales figures for the last few years Action themes, I'd like to see, because I loved and bought them all. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I don't think everything that is successful will continue on forever until it isn't successful. It is good marketing sense to go out on top with a theme instead of riding it down and people getting sick of it. That way you can introduce new themes the following year with a positive history of success in related themes. I think they plan on short waves with some themes to make room for other sets. Otherwise they would only have a few themes with a lot of sets which would get stale pretty quickly. Quote
Esvald Forceswoop Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 (edited) I agree with Harry Potter... instead of getting a new Hogwarts Castle for every movie, they should do Ministry of Magic, Private Drive 4, Chamber of Secrets, Grimmalud Place 12, Harry, Ron and Hermione tenting (7/1), the Shell Cottage... I also really like to see Elder Scrolls in Lego, lot of places and figures could be realse... But video games never gone to Lego, so thats just a dream. ogami_ito Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 (edited) I have seen some people on this long thread say "Dynasty Warriors". That's a little silly... because they could... and should... do Three Kingdoms. (But is saying this OT in a thread about licensed themes? I will continue with this anyway as I don't think there is a non-licensed dream theme thread.)Now, 3Kingdoms would give TLG some more sales in China... but not much. Chinese usually buy cheap toys unless the toy has a "status" element or it is heavily marketed as an education learning device (not toy). But some people would buy it. The other problem with 3Kingdoms is the clone brands that already do this. And doing a 3 Kingdoms toy is OK, but a little like getting on the band-wagon. I think it would be cool to introduce the theme "Ancient China".Based off of the Song Dynasty, Ancient China could be about the conflict between the Sky Emperor (not in the sky... its just another word of "heavenly" or "celestrial") and the Horseman. We could have a lot of cool architecture with a more realistic feel. We could have weird gun-powder weapons that would seem almost steam-punk-ish. Cool paddle-wheel boats and a Junk. Castles, of course. And Asian-medieval townscape. Great cavalry mini-fig battlepacks. Lots of cool stuff. And it would be popular in both Western and especially Asian markets. brodey1 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 My dream was always a LOTR license, and now it's a reality Quote
davedude Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 HE-MAN and the masters of the universe!!!!!!! Quote
Faefrost Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 HE-MAN and the masters of the universe!!!!!!! Hey, we got TMNT and almost got Thundercats. So you never know. The biggest issue with He Man and some similar IP's is doesn't a competing toy company outright own part of the IP? Quote
BlueberryWaffles Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 HUNGER GAMES! HUNGER GAMES! HUNGER.....oh I think you get the point. I would adore Hunger Games sets, and with Catching Fire this fall, it would be a great time to see them. Quote
BrickG Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Harry Potter doesn't seem to have the staying power of stuff like Star Wars. I'm not sure how viable it is to sell it now that the movies are done. Quote

Brickadiergerard Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 While we're on dream ones, Judge Dredd would be awesome. Middle-Earth and Batman were dream ones too. Quote
Crownie Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Hey, we got TMNT and almost got Thundercats. So you never know. The biggest issue with He Man and some similar IP's is doesn't a competing toy company outright own part of the IP? Oy. That's the problem. He-Man is Mattel. And vice versa. They seems to be holding on to the Masters of the Universe IP very tightly - I can see them trying to make their own construction toy long before they'd hand the reigns over to LEGO. And what a disaster that would be. In my own imaginary parallel universe, it could happen. * Also, that Bowser construction posted above is awesome. When TMNT was first announced, I started having visions of certain pieces being used across both themes (TMNT and Mario)...mainly the pipes. And who wouldn't love pipes? With or without Man-eating Piranha flowers... Man, back to my imaginary universe... Quote
DaSkulduggery77 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I'd really love to see a Jurassic Park theme. Not a small one in LEGO Studios, but an actual, full on, theme with sets for a lot of the scenes and characters. I'd also absolutely love to see a theme for a few Clint Eastwood westerns. It would never happen, of course, but the outlaw Jose Wales as lego..... Quote
Faefrost Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 While we're on dream ones, Judge Dredd would be awesome. Middle-Earth and Batman were dream ones too. I would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting where some one suggests Judge Dredd. Just to see the look on the Lego people's faces. I mean I love JD. I would love to see some real Dredd Minifigs. But I think it would hit the Lego review committee like a death metal band interviewing for a job at the local public library. Quote
Plissken Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 @Jurassic Park Sets Hasbro has gained the license for new toys in 2014. They said they would do something new with the toylines. Not clear what that means, but I think a Kre-O line is more possible than a Lego one at the moment. Quote
wonkyeye Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 The Walking Dead! It will never happen, but just imagine it... Quote
greeny Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Either Lego Mario, or Lego Simpsons or Futurama. I can imagine how awesome those would be Quote
AyliffeMakit Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I know Character building have the licence, but Lego Doctor Who would be my dream... Quote
becauseBATMAN Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 METAL GEAR SOLID would be pretty epic in my opinion... Lego should also capitalize on everything Batman possible IMO.... the Batman universe is so big. If i was a creator working for Lego I'd never run out of set ideas! Quote
M'Kyuun Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Also Transformers would be really cool, seeing that the Kre-o one's don't transform and the minfigures crack very quickly and easy. Transformers would have been great. While speaking to a LEGO rep last year, I asked about LEGO doing a transforming theme. He told me that Hasbro approached LEGO to do TF sets. After attempting to make sets, TLG rejected the offer. I believe he said they felt they couldn't do it feasibly within financial restraints. And so, we have Kre-o. I'd love a Macross(the basis of Robotech in the US) theme, although the subject matter, licensing, and feasibility of producing a variety of transforming jet fighters are all strikes against it. I'd be happy with an original transforming theme, so long as the transformations and alt modes were nice looking and believable. A robot that transforms into something completely unrecognizable is pointless. Quote
LibraryBoy Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Add me to the list of people who'd love to see Lego get the Doctor Who license away from Character Builders. Not only for the sets, which would be awesome, but just imagine the video game that TT Games could make out of that! Different Doctors having different abilities, all those companions and enemies to choose from to pad out the roster... it'd be glorious. I also like the Super Mario Bros. idea. My son would go bananas over that. Those K'nex Mario Kart sets... the figures look nice, but the cars don't stay together well at all. Quote
kinggregus Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 (edited) I am not sure it has been covered in earlier posts but a Tintin license could be great. The character has been going through so many different adventures that there is so much room for variety. Also Tintin is currently under a movie licence to appeal a broader audience. The question afterwards would be to know in which section of the forum the theme would go as it could please a lot of us (pirates, licensed, sci-fi, town, etc...)
