(I was thinking they where all on the very tall side) Something along those lines with the sails I was thinking too. I did some searching and came across THIS image ... Maybe we are just over thinking it lol but she seems to share similar lines. Quote
Bart Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 that link sends me to a pinterest page with 90 images :/ Quote
Bregir Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 Bart, typically the mainmast of a three master should be about the same height as the length of the vessel, so I think your masts are fine. Might be on the tall side, but maybe she is a swift sailer? If you add royal masts, she might be too tall, though ;) I do think the yards could be a bit closer to the tops, though. Quote
Bart Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 (edited) @Bregirno royal masts will be added. If she is to fly royal or skysails in very light wind that will be on the topgallant masts (as the topgallant yards are only hung halfway up those masts) Mast height has indeed worked out, I copy pasted and put it horizontal next to the ship to check it. I will try the yards closer to the tops. I just came across a downside :/ 5 midsections puts her at a class 6. which will cost 560db I'll have to save up for a very long time will I be able to affort to license her :/ not to mention the upkeep which even when deducting the first free 100 is above my current income o.O Edited March 26, 2018 by Bart Quote

For some reason when I followed the link it displayed the pin with just this photo ... Less you clicked it ... As far as the DBs maybe bring it up in our faction thread ... I know if I had the coin I would loan it ... Its a beautiful ship so far ... Dont let that stop you though ... Even if you dont licence it right away Quote
Bregir Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 Yes, talk to your faction. Ask for investors, and ask merchants to help pay for her services as an escort vessel or hope to make money in prizes. :) Alternatively, you can use her for stories without licensing her. Only when you want to use her in the mrca do you need her licensed. Quote
Bart Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 (edited) Ah that picture looks nice, going to save that as a reference for when I get to the sails! and don't worry the lack of coin will not stop me from finishing this ship, my own drive for perfectionism will slow it down enough already :P *mental note, stuns'ls and stuns'l yard extension things. renting her out as an escort might be the most feasible idea! The bank of Corrington have any gold transports Captain Cooke that need protection? ;) :P I promise to not relay sailing information to any other SeaRats. Edited March 26, 2018 by Bart Quote

Legostone Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 Before anyone misses it - Captain Green Hair has posted another one of his great ships over in the pirate subforum, go here to check it out: Le Fleuron Also, two more pics of my new WIP: Goal is to finish it by April 13 for Wetteren, gonna be a bit of a challenge getting there, but wish me luck Quote
Bart Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 Looking good Legostone, I like the minifig as ornament of the side of the stern. Quote

Flavius Gratian Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 Hi guys! I'm working on the rigging for the Intrepid and new ship I've built, but I'm unsure how put on the jibs. So I wonder if you have any suggestions? I have looked at some ships on the forum but it's a bit hard to tell from the pictures Quote
Bart Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 @Flavius Gratian could you post a picture of what you've got, as there are several ways to put jibs depending on ship's style type age etc. It would be easier to help you out that way. Quote
Bregir Posted April 3, 2018 Author Posted April 3, 2018 Looks great, LS - very elaborate detailing for the galleries and bow both! 41 minutes ago, Flavius Gratian said: Hi guys! I have looked at some ships on the forum but it's a bit hard to tell from the pictures I have used small steel wire hoops or hooks in the past for cloth sails, but it really depends on your material of sails. You could also set the jibs "a-flying" which means not fixed to the stays. But I agree with Bart - a few pictures (or a closer description) of what you have so far would be great to get a better impression of what you are working with. :) Looking forward to seeing your progress! Flavius Gratian Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 @Bregir @Bart The ship is not very complicated, just a small cutter. I've tied three strings to the mast for the jibs, and that's it really The sails are cloth that I've just cut out. Quote
Bart Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 aha now I understand the question better. sewing it onto the fore stay might be a good option, if you are up for it. or a few stitches in the lower forward corner to connect it to the bowsprit, and a stich with a small line to hoist the sail along the stay. *option for the future as you've already cut the sails, leaving a small edge extra on the forward, to fold around the stay and glue it back on the sail. Bart Quote
Bregir Posted April 4, 2018 Author Posted April 4, 2018 Here is what I have done on the Blazer. This allows the sails to be hoisted and lowered, as the hoops travel up or down the stays. Quote
Bart Posted April 4, 2018 Posted April 4, 2018 @Bregir That is extremely well done! very accurate to real ships. Quote
Flavius Gratian Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Thanks! I'll see what I can come up with on my own. Bregir's work is very impressive but I don't think I can match that quite yet Quote

Bregir's work is very impressive but I don't think I can match that quite yet Hope it works! The challenge with the steel hoops is that it needs something to anchor against, which in my case is the string I have sewn into the edge of the sail. Otherwise, it will rip, I think. Quote
Kwatchi Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 (edited) @Legostone Figured I'd respond here rather than Bart's Narwal thread. Here's the issue I've been having: This build is leans more towards playable than accurate, as my style/collection dictates. Even by that standard though, these head rails look completely rubbish. I've tried a few different pieces and connection points, but I can't seem to get a nice vertical arc. It is not the only problem the ship has, but it is the most glaring and I really want to get this off my desk since it has been acting as a sort of "builder's block" for months now. TLDR - If you can point me to some of the head rail examples you mentioned earlier, I'd appreciate it. Edited April 5, 2018 by Kwatchi Quote
Bart Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Kwatchi on the Narwal the headrails only curve vertical. they start out going straight down (connected with a regullar 1x1 clip) make the curve down and forward, ending straight up vertically again behind the figure head. I don't know if you have any longer pieces of those flexible shafts? but if you do then try to start them in the black line near that anchor chain. and then towards that headlight, see what that does. Quote
Legostone Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 @Kwatchi So, where do I start? Lets have a look at a real ships plans from ontop: And from the side: First thing to note - the headrails basically add a trapezoid-shaped small deck to the bow (it is the same for bigger vessels, so if your ship is bigger then the Surprise its still fine), nothing really round. Now, lets continue by looking at a larger ship from the side, HMS Victory: Second thing to note - no matter the size of the ship, the top rail basically ends at the highest point of the forecastle. Okay, basic principle on some plans are dealt with, how to build it now? So, lets have a look at some example builds: Examples in lego: Spoiler My Frigate Cardinal's Shadow; I'm using flex axles here as well; with a bow your height a third flex axle might be a good idea. The lower rails is pulled in with a rubber band to get it curved inwards. Something like this could work for you.@Captain Green Hair has finally posted his new SOTL - I think his implementation of the headrails is excellent and still reasonably simple. Something similar to this might work for you: The lower details of this technique can probably also be replaced with some inverse slopes to get some extra sturdiness for playability (I've built a very similar bow before looking at CGHs WIP and found them pretty sturdy actually) Now, some other designs not using flex axles:@Dread Pirate Wesley's Persephone: He is using 1x4 Hingeplates which work pretty well here, though they are probably alright regarding stability. @Imperial Shipyards Achille (and other frigates) basically as good as it gets at this scale, quite complicated but decently sturdy construction. @Captain Green Hair's orginal frigate: Simple, effective and not exactly sturdy. My current WIP: Not quite as sturdy as pure flex tubing, but looking decent I believe. My Esprit Fortune: This is really sturdy, but only viable on rather specific ship shapes I think. I hope I could help get some inspiration, if you need more I can have another look around if I find anything Quote
LM71Blackbird Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 So, what do you all think about this ship? It is a modified version of my copper hulled heavy frigate. This one has a whopping 56 guns on it, which is up from 40 on the copper hulled version. Colors aren't finals either, I just didn't render any with more than brown. 56-gun Heavy Frigate 1 by LM71Blackbird, on Flickr Quote
Bart Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 I think it's a bit to straight. it could use some curve, (sheer) and why that bow? Quote
