Posted January 17, 200817 yr I just want to know, what you think about rebuilding/recreating other people
January 17, 200817 yr There is really nothing wrong with reproducing another person's MOC with your pieces, just as there is no problem with reproducing old lego sets you never owned but with parts you have. Using someone else's pictures and claiming them as your own and profiting off of someone else's design could be considered controversial. Maybe someone should create a MOC police force. lol
January 18, 200817 yr Author Coming up with your own work can be incredibly challenging, so it is frustrating to see somebody clone your efforts only to pass them off as being their own. Of course, if it is for your own personal collection than I don't see an issue. Remember, aloy og AFOLs love to share their work with others. This becomes meaningless when everybody starts immitating your work and calling it their own. So, since most of the people who will see it (my friends, and my girlfriend) already know, that I just want to rebuild a certain MOC (which I showed them on brickshelf), and I don Edited January 18, 200817 yr by Nebsirob
January 18, 200817 yr A good question, frankly I would feel honored to have someone actually rebuild some aspect of my mocs. What is not ok, or honorable, in my eyes is to rebuild the moc, host pictures of it, and not give credit where credit is due. Even sections or designs of a moc, without credit in my eyes, is bad. Ive seen some sections of some peoples moc's that are very individual, perfectly copied. In fact ive seen some rather pequliar looking designs afew times that looks a great deal like sections from some of my mocs, right after I've posted mine. :-/ I just tell myself coincidence. But Ive seen copies and credit taken from other people, it is not fun. Rebuilding mocs of others? An honor. Taking credit for it? I can barely think of anything more dishonorable on the Lego community. My thoughts. :-$

January 18, 200817 yr Rebuilding mocs of others? An honor. Taking credit for it? I can barely think of anything more dishonorable on the Lego community. Exactly. It's fine to rebuild some one's MOC, just so long as you give them credit. Or if you see some one's MOC and think it's awesome, and are inspired to build something vastly similar to it, you can at least say 'inspired by ____'s MOC'. Copying someone else's MOC and taking credit for the build is just sad, and it's worse if you take some one else's own pictures and take credit for it! :-X ~Peace
January 18, 200817 yr just give em credit and I'm sure they won't mind. :-) This is the most important thing when rebuilding a MOC of somebody else. I often want to rebuild things I see at Brickshelf or whereever. I did so here. Maybe I should write the folder description in english. :-$ Some builder even include LDraw files in their folder, so they invite you to rebuild their own creation. I would also love to see someone rebuilding an invention from me. But they must give credit as I give credit to whom I borrowed my creation of.
January 18, 200817 yr Rebuilding mocs of others? An honor. Taking credit for it? I can barely think of anything more dishonorable on the Lego community. I think this says it very nicely. Copying the work of others is very flattering, but taking credit when showing it to others (at home or on the internet) is just not-done. So personally, I see no objections to recreating MOCs made by other people, as long as you give them credit for the original design. P.S. Asking permission before copying a MOC might be a good idea as well. Edited January 18, 200817 yr by TheFrisian
January 18, 200817 yr Sometimes ideas are simply to good, i sometimes use other peoples ideas. *sweet* But rebuilding a MOC completely? I'd never do that. But if someone would like to rebuild my MOCs it is ok, as long as they give me a little credit. *y*
January 18, 200817 yr It is all about the credit in my opinion. I love it when people rebuild my Executor (and improve it) because it took a lot of work to make the instructions, and I would also like others to build more Model Team in the old 12 studs wide scale. To copy a pictures and claim it's yours is of course a complete no-no, but I'm also not that happy about people who copy designs, improve them and claim "this is how that creation should have been". That even applies for the official LEGO creations. I guess that is more an issue of pride than of copying. End line from me: Rebuild my Executor and you will make me very happy *wub*
January 19, 200817 yr Didn't mutley777 have a bad case of that? When some one stole a bunch of his pictures and made a MOCPages account claiming credit for them all. Now that is just horrible. :-X :-X

Now that is just horrible. :-X :-X Yeah! A lot of people from here posted comments saying that they were a thief. Heck, I posted a coment on that recenty. Back on topic: I think it's okay to reproduce someones MOC as long as you give them credit and don't claim it's your original idea.
January 19, 200817 yr i would like to add, that if you recreate an MOC that isn't yours, you should contact the originator before hand, or at the least, after... because if he/she stumbles upon it by accident, it might be quite shocking/worrisome for him/her at first - even if you've given credit. communication is always the best... that way, the builder can ask any questions of you, if he has any, and vice versa. if it were me, i wouldn't use anyone

Yeah, I think, that
January 20, 200817 yr In the lego train world a lot of copying happens. Some of the best creators like Ben Beneke and James Mathis often provide Ldraw files so that you can learn how they made it. I still think one needs to provide credit. I often copy, right now Im working on my own version of Freebees switch tower And I've just made a gree version of the 10183 crocodile locomotive.
