My general opinion of Bionicle is that when there's an ad that states, "bin of Legos some city, mainly Bionicle" it's like saying there's a tonne of Mega Blocs in there.

Bionicle (again in my opinion) isn't a strong sub-brand and also doesn't play nice with other themes.  Like Nexo Knights would work reasonably well with Star Wars, etc.

I'm not looking to create a thing here where we debate the validity of Bionicle within the Lego brand.  I get it, it had a decent following and isn't anything remotely similar to  the infamous Galidor or Jack Stone, it just has a limited appeal, similar to Monorail, which 25 years later has yet to be replaced.

The difference there is that Bionicle was one of the LEGO Group's most successful themes for several years (and one of their ONLY successful themes in 2003), while monorail sets were never successful at all. The constraction category may be somewhat niche today, but the mainstream success it had in the past gives LEGO some incentive to keep exploring new possibilities for it in the future, which is something that can't really be said for monorail.

My feeling is that LEGO is most likely to try coming up with an entirely new theme to try and fill the niche Bionicle left behind, rather than rebooting one of their other constraction themes. But I don't expect anything of that sort until at least 2018, because Bionicle G2 was seemingly discontinued on short notice, and new themes tend to take at least two years to develop. For comparison's sake, LEGO began developing Hero Factory in 2008 or so, and began developing Bionicle G2 in 2012.

It also wouldn't entirely surprise me if LEGO continued to dabble in constraction sets for other popular themes, like Super Heroes and Ninjago.

I'm not sure if anything will come to fully replace. Maybe? Some new version of Hero Factory, maybe if TLG feels it would be a good idea, a new story after the second story abruptly closed. I sort of... doubt they'll revisit the theme wholly again, so I kinda feel like some evolution (ie: like Slizers before Bionicle, and... if I remember correctly, I think Roboriders were before Slizers? I might be off on that).

To me, the overall constraction figure theme seems to be the replacement (like the constraction figure Star Wars sets, for example). They could branch out these types of sets to other themes, which I imagine would ultimately be what would come to replace the old Bionicle theme, if anything.

I mean I could be wrong, just sorta how I feel it'll play out.
