your build keeps getting better and better.I really like this whole project...something I would love to build one day!!

Maybe not necessarily better, but it definitely feels like the most ambitious project since my attempt at the LTM11200. It is a massive challenge to cram all the functions in, get a rigid structure, proper looks, free of impossible lego constructs and keep adherong to my own 'rules for proper design'

Hopefully this project will fare better than that the crane... If it meets my own standards in the end I'll have a chat with Legolijntje if he is up for instructions (to warn you up front @legolijntje : there are 6 pneumatic functions with 10 cilinders in total if I counted correctly, piececount will be 4-6k I think)

We're you working on this parallel with the db11

Would love to see this finished

No this is the successorproject. The only projects I do in parallel to my own projects are the commissions I get. They get precedence over my own, hence my own projects tend to take long nowadays :sceptic:.

Time for another update:

33332213403_a3bbd64230_c.jpg

The internal design is coming along nicely:

The canopy now not only opens up but also releases itself when the seats are ejected.

All 6 electrical functions are in and working

The joystick is connected to the mechanism that will control the flight surfaces. I m actually not entirely sure what all the control surfaces are on a Tomcat:blush:, so I use the vertical surfaces for yaw control (coupled to the joystick left-right movement) and the small horizontal wings in the back will be differentially operated to control roll and pitch depending on the joystick's position (left-right for roll and forward-backwards for pitch).

The pneumatic switches are in, but the tubing is not yet (but there seems to be space enough to route them.

The main landinggear has the 3D linkage that will guide the landing gear from facing upwards to facing sideways when lowering it.

So far so good. The point where I am a bit stuck at is the engine nacelles. As you can see they are quite big, square and ugly. The point is that I want to keep them empty to be able to fit separate jetengines inside, but since Lego is at least one stud thick the outer diameter of the nacelles increases fast. They are now 10x9 studs in diameter and that is just too much. But shrinking them to a more modest 8x7 will only leave an inner diameter of 5x5 for the engine and that is too small I think. A 6x6 engine might be a good compromise, but that will be hell to build...
So suggestions are welcome.

Compared to my studded version this one feels lighter and stronger so that is a nice bonus.

Looks like it will be jammed with features (literally speaking) you've been making some awesome progress! :thumbup: seeing as you can only do soo much in Lego I'd I say leave the engine nacelles alone, they look fine to me but also once you get the remaining bodywork on I'm sure they'll look proper!

Hi,

Time for another update. I have been working on the wings and swingwing mechanism. Here are the results:

35088431305_0c825b07a8_c.jpg

What do you think of the colourscheme for the wings? The alternative is LBG wings, but in the longest axle is only 9L in LBG... OTOH the 3x3 connector with 4 pins wouldn't stand out like it does now...

Inside the wing there are airbrakes (the row of 0.5x6 liftarms) and the leading and trailing flaps. Both will be operated with pneumatics (but I do have to find some space for them). The swing wing mechanism works really nice, the big 5x11 curved panels do a wonderful job in leading the trailing wing edges onto the fuselage.

The longest axle is 13l accually, from the 42039 technic set. Go through the parts list.

And the jet looks awesome!

Thanks.

42039 is the LeMans racer... I am pretty sure there is no 13L LBG axle in that one...

I am pretty sure 13L doesn't even exist at all. We do get LBG 11L in 2H17 though, and 6/8/10/12L does exist in LBG but is very hard to get and not cheap.

This seller has them: https://store.bricklink.com/matthi?sID=200508&itemID=102867714#/shop?o={"itemType":"P","catID":"134"}

@Aventador2004 That's not an axle, that's a liftarm :tongue:

oh my, whoops. i completely messed myself up. sorry, i mistook axle for liftarm.

Wow this looks awesome! I love the colour scheme. I understand you don't like that 3x3 LBG part in the wings and therefore are considering full LBG wings, but the black works so well with the medium blue imo. Can't wait for the video (I hope there will be one at least).

Thx all for the encouragement, I will keep the colourscheme as is.
@Appie: There certainly will be a video when it is finished. I estimate to be at 70% now (all the electric functions are working, the controlsurfaces are working, but I still need to design the pneumatics, the nacelles and the engines and find a proper buildingsequence for the instructions. I am aiming to get it finished before the summer is over.

Have to say, with some MOCs you can just tell they will look beautiful, even when they are nowhere near complete.  Look forward to seeing more of this, there aren't enough MOC planes and this is going to be a real looker :thumbup:
