One thing that bothers me is that when the hatch fully opens, I have to turn the switch back to neutral position, or else the fans will stop spinning.

So in step 14, I replace the clutch gear with the normal 24z gear:

while in step 20 I use two clutch gears instead.

I tested this out and found out that the clutch gear on the wheel retraction side was too weak that it slips before moving the wheel. The clutch gear on the VTOL side does slip too just not as often. So totally NOT recommend this MOD.

You know there was a discussion about the wing Position and size. Yesterday i have built the jet and the wing is really to small

The larger wings and horizontal stabilizers are a big improvement.  The angle of the leading edge of the wing should really be steeper than that to look like the F-35 though.

Thank you very much Eric. Now it has a chance to fly without a rocket booster :D

True, but you should go ahead and try the rocket anyway.

The wings are a major improvement, but they look a little bit out of place. Maybe try adding the red stripe from the fuselage, and making the back half of the wings black would look better, or maybe try changing some of the fuselage pieces to white would do it, as the transition is rather abrupt from the blue and black fuselage to the white wings. Also, I don't know if a real F-35 has the wings that far back, I think moving the wings 1 or 2 studs forward would look better, make it look more balanced. Just my thoughts, it's already much better, but there is room for improvement.

Excellent job.  I hope we get this set in the states soon, as I'd like to get it and make the above mods.

Hi Effe,

I realy like this mod.

I do hesitate on buying this set. Perhaps you can help me.

Do you think it would be possible to insert proper flight command Inside the plane? is ther enough roo for that according to you?.

My objective would be to take out all electrical Equipment, no PFS so, and made a great oldstyle manual set.

without power functions it should be possible but the linkage for the VTOL mechanism need a lot of space. So it could be hard to have VTOL and standard flight command system.

edit:

a small mod to mke it more aerodynamic

Hi Effe,

Thanks for this work!

I'll take one accurate look at this as soon as i get time to do it well.

Seems promissing!

EDIT: as you've built it, do you think (as i do) that this version presents a way better playability (for a child i mean)?

@steph77

for a swoosh faktor it is really big but the usability is better than on the set. The VTOL system for example can be engaged with the hand which holds the plane.
