[MOC/Mod] E-Wing Escort Starfighter

The E-Wing is one of my favourite Legends EU ships. I made this one by building the cockpit and nose from the Resistance X-Wing, a custom body and nose, and the basic wing structure from Jek 14's Stealth Starfighter. The only major problems I'm having with the build so far are that Stud.io is currently lacking the new windscreen, which I think is necessary for the shape, and I can't tell if certain hinge connections would work in reality.

Below is the wing connection I'm unsure about. It looks like the larger hinges should be able to join up to the small one at the top, while the clip hinges below hold the wing. But I'm not sure if the third stud down on the wing is actually obstructing the yellow section of the hinge.

I'll be grateful if anyone can give me some tips. :)

For the most part, I'm happy with how it turned out, but there are some modifications I'll have to make, specifically to how the engines are held together inside, and the landing gear. The axles inside the engines seem to be at the wrong length ratio, so the front can easily be knocked off. The landing gear is just badly designed, and I might have to completely rework it. As you can see, I'm missing a 3L bar on the front skid, I got a 4L bar by accident. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Otherwise, the front would be ok. The back skids need a less flexible framework, and one of the clips collides with the skid underneath.

The cannons aren't quite as long as intended, it turns out the pin hole on the end of the 3L technic pins with an axle holder end aren't the right shape for connecting bars, so that's another thing that I might alter, but it doesn't detract from the look of it.

Apart from those the only thing I'd like to change is that the only thing holding the nose is a pair of technic pin bricks, but it's not too wobbly.

The lid for the astromech compartment comes off easily enough, though the 1x4 bricks sometimes need pressing back on. :)

Hello, Moppo!

Your MOC looks neat so far!

The wing connection looks pretty great, I would recommend trying everything with physical bricks, it shouldn't cost you much for those few parts.

To improve, I would say that the nose is maybe too stubby, and could be more streamlined. Also the flexible connections for the wing tips really stands out, maybe try a different method of angling them.

I might have to try that. It's either that or ordering the lot and improvising if it doesn't work. :D 

E-Wing noses in the pictures I've found don't seem to be as long as an X-Wing's, but it does seem to vary a lot. The piece that connects the wing tips comes in white, that might hide it better. The best alternative option I've come up with so far is to use ring-clips and a bar. But I'll see what else I can come up with.

Looks great Moppo! I think the combination of Poe's x-wing fuselage and Jek 14's wings really works. I agree with ellisss that the best thing to do is to put this into real bricks both to see if the hinge really works and just for the sake of everything looking better in real brick form.

I quite like how the longer nose turned out, though I still haven't come up with a good way to give it the one continuous slope that separates it from the X-Wing.

I'm not so sure about the wingtip connections. It seems just colouring the one I was using white looks more solid than using clips.

I'm not familiar with the model, but is there supposed to be a canopy. The whole thing looks great BTW!

Hey there, Moppo!

So, 'cause I thought this looks like an awesome way to secure a wing, I wanted to see if it would work.  Whether this works might depend on your leniency when it comes to "legal" building techniques.  The bottom of the piece does technically touch the stud, but not enough to really stress the connection.  I'd say it's nearly perfect considering the angles you're going for.  With the assembly secured within the model, you might see the bottom clips begin to pry away from the plate, if ever so slightly, but you'll have to build the model and find out.  The only thing I could suggest is placing a plate under that piece to separate it from the wing.  I've attached two [lo-res] images that sort of show what I'm referring to.  As long as it's secure, which it seems to be, I think you'll be fine!

E-wing is my favorite craft as well. Nice build. I prefer the other E-wing designs out there that were sold as model kits. I based my E-wing on the Model kits but I added my style to it also.

Hey! Thanks Cartographer, I thought an extra layer might be necessary. I've incorporated another plate into the build to avoid having the hinge pry itself away.

That's a really nice E-Wing, Tyutyu. Lots of angles there. I like the style of building, it's something I hope to try eventually, but I need to rebuild my collection of physical bricks before I can really try it out properly. :)

I've made a few alterations to the detail of the body and given it a whole new nose. This is what I'll be building IRL, so fingers crossed it doesn't fall apart!

Very good improvements over your first versions. The new nose and the dark greay side grills under the cockpit look very good but I can see you have almost changed everything. Keep it up!

I love my E-wing. I never finished it fully, but its my favorite shelf display item. I am hard at work with my X-wing but after that I want to revisit my E-wing. Externally I don' t want to change much. Internally only the nose section is good and strong, though it looks weak. The rear however needs a redesign to make it strong. The front section and the rear section is a separate module connected by 6 technic pins + plates on top. Strongest connection I ever made lol.

I love it! I always wanted to shrink my E-Wing to this size but I never got too it because I was afraid it would lose too much detail.

Thanks! Funny, it turned out quite a bit bigger than I'd expected, not huge, but it was a relief to pick it up and it feel like a solid thing.

Great MOC and I love that everybody is still doing MOC's of ships from the expanded universe regardless of it being cannon. I'd love to get my hands on that LDD if possible.
