Robert8 Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 (edited) Well, the cat is out of the hat now Thanks to Itaria, now we know that Series 18 will be a themed series, like Series 14 (the monsters series) Series 18 will be released on April 1 2018 Edited March 7, 2018 by Robert8 Quote
SirBlake Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 I predict re-do's of classic figs. By classic, I'm talking late 70's-early-80's. For example, original space guy, but with modern CMF printing including on the arms and legs. Quote
Cagast Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 (edited) So next year there won't be any regular classic series at all? Disappointing. To me, this can be either a total failure, or something that will bring loads of interesting prints and pieces. Depends on what the "theme" is. Also it's worth mentioning that Itaria said: "It may be considered historic, but in a way nobody expects." - National series? We have the French guy in S17, maybe its a sign. There's still lots of nation-specific minifigures they can make, enough to make a 16-fig series. - Music series? Minifigs would be based on famous singers/musicians, even if they don't use real names, and that can be considered "historic" 'with a twist'. This could work for other areas like sports, but musicians come to my mind first. - Costume series? I know this one doesn't fit any rumors, but 16 suit guys at once would be amazing. 1 minute ago, SirBlake said: I predict re-do's of classic figs. By classic, I'm talking late 70's-early-80's. Johnny Thunder, Vladek, Oleg, Rock Raiders? Edited March 6, 2017 by Cagast Quote
gedren_y Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 One thing: there is another meaning to the word 'historic'. It could mean 'history making' or 'unprecedented'. Or it could be relating to the anniversary of some 'historic' event. I'll do some research. Quote

Borex Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Historic, but with a twist? A fantasy themed series? A licensed themed 80ies 90ies series? (like great movie heroes? cartoon heroes? They can reuse a lot of dimension figures) A Zelda series? A Gods series? With Greek/Roman, Egyptian and whatnot Gods in it? Argh, the suspense is already killing me >:-( Quote
Mr. President Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I really like the Collectible Minifigure series, so I like that they seem very committed to continuing it. But - can you guys just call me when the coy hinting, teasing, and completely unrealistic wishlisting is done? It was always ridiculous and it has gotten much worse over time. Quote
1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 A bunch of historic figures would be awesome, and I think there's a lot of holes in our historic figure lineup. However, given that Itaria said "it may be considered historic, but in a way nobody expects", that pretty much tells me that it isn't a historic series. Retro figs sounds like a big possibility. Perhaps (and this is the space geek in me) a space-themed series, both with new interpretations of the factions of Lego Space and with figures inspired on movies (such as Robbie the robot)? That is probably wishful thinking on my part, but I'd kill for a space themed series. A general retro series would be more likely than that, I think. I doubt it'll be a costumed figure series, since they seem to use those to boost sales on each regular series. Or maybe Itaria means historic in that it will set a precedent, and CMFs won't ever be the same after that? The curiosity is killing me! 2 hours ago, Mr. President said: I really like the Collectible Minifigure series, so I like that they seem very committed to continuing it. I'd recommend you not to check this thread for at least a couple of months, because we'll likely be doing exactly that for a while. 5 hours ago, gedren_y said: One thing: there is another meaning to the word 'historic'. Well, 2018 will be the 40th anniversary of the minifigure! So there might be something there... Quote
telaruhn Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I'm ambivalent on themed series. I typically like the mish-mash of characters you get in a normal series, but we're surely getting a bunch of interesting new parts... It's hard to say what kind of theme it will be to set a precedent. IMO Series 14 didn't reinvent the wheel, so I'm not holding my breath for anything groundbreaking. In any case, we probably won't see anything for another 9 months or so. I need to get my hands on Series 17 first!! Quote
NewTown Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Next series will be Ninjago. Next regular series won't be until 2018. Same source told me no second wave for Lego Batman :( Quote

Itaria No Shintaku Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I am NOT sure that S18 is themed. I am very confused right now. Quote

gedren_y Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I think what @Itaria No Shintaku was getting at was that he had information that lead him to believe Series 18 was themed, but now thinks the theme may belong to a non-regular series. We have nothing definitive, so making declarative statements seems premature. Quote

x105Black Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I'm excited about this series. Tentatively excited. Quote
MicroJow Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 If I had to guess, which I don't but I am going to anyway, I would suspect that, as this will be the 40th anniversary of the minifigure, the series will be themed as such, providing us with updates of classic minifigures. Quote
SirBlake Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 1978 minifigs consisted of very basic archetypes. Mostly Police, Fire Fighters, Space Guys and Knights with a few very plain civilians thrown in there. (please correct me if I'm wrong here) TLG has done vintage revisits before which were faithful recreations of the originals. What I'd like to see if they go that route is for them to apply their CMF team creativity to these and give us updated versions of them. Another angle is that they could take highlights from across those 40 years and do the same thing. For example, there weren't pirates in 1978, but they could pick a classic example of one and include it in this series. Quote

Perhaps something similar to what they did with the S1 astronaut, which was loosely based on the Classic Space figures. I'd like something like that. But, just off the top of my head, it would seem hard to distinguish such a series from a regular numbered series. I mean, if it's a collection of figures that 1) look modern and 2) are diverse, then how would anyone be able to tell that it is a themed series, even if it's inspired on old designs from across the years? If they do go retro, I hope they give us (if not with this series, in the future) Rocket Racer from Lego racers. I've been wanting that figure for years. Quote

Well, simply put, they could just promote it that way. "40th anniversary tribute minifigs" Done. Quote
x105Black Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 All of this sounds nice, but I think it's going to be more 'themed' than that. More like the other 'themed' series of monsters. Quote
