Thanks for the information! While I like such sets I am no fan of subscriptions and try to avoid them as much as possible. I am very happy that they didn't go with a subscription model.

It was 4.99 what they were asking but the premise was the mention of reprinted sets which piqcued my interest, rumor had it like recent sets and I had my eyes on the 2015 pirates or 2013 castle sets.  I

I have a hard time imagining how that would have worked. Does Lego have a large warehouse with thousands of copies of hundreds of old sets or would the sets be re-released?

The key wording and my take away from it was “Buy past sets from the LEGO archive” as a heads up that indeed they would be re-issue sets of their older catalog, I’m guessing unlicensed and made to order. With modern variations of course due to the bricks not being made or maybe they still have the molds and could re use them.

I know that lego is against reselling lego sets, but they have done it in the past, especially with GWP’s like forestmen hideout, and lego ideas sets like the ship in a bottle.

All existing toy makers are literally reissuing their older sets, from Playmates and the TMNT retro collection which aside from a few differences are using the same carded box from the 80’s, Hasbro finally fixed their Optimus prime trailer mold and has given us perfect reissues of Prime in this year, and of course other toy brands like McFarlane with older Kenner figures.

LEGO seems to interested in doing this but they are trying to figure out a profitable way of doing so IMHO. I’m all for buying reissued sets of pirates, space  and castle in a heartbeat if given the chance versus waiting for the next remake of an older set. If they have a museum of every single set they have, which could help them in reprinting older brick molds.

I hope that makes sense for you on how I imagined they could do it, because to be honest hasbro has been knocking it out of the park with perfect or almost near identical reissues of their G1 transformers, but on the other hand we know LEGO is comfortable with licensed sets at the moment, but there’s always what ifs. Like it or not retailers are pushing their subscription services that LEGO is really one of the few who hasn’t leaned towards it.

Apparently these will be upcoming insider rewards. The "chronometer" was already available for limited time yesterday during a live stream which I missed. :(

The part in question is from Monkie Kid. New for 2024.

They made a survey where people had several different options to vote on what Lego Insiders (one of the questions was what name it should get and  the result was obviously that) should become. Some of those question were if people would be willing to pay for a subscription (and how much they would pay for it), and what people would like to get from it. One of those options what that people could get access to buy exclusive Sets that resemble older Sets from Lego´s history.

Well I guess not many were willing to pay for something like that so Insiders replaced VIP with actually quite little changes.

That will make Lego even more expensive. What a stupid idea. So they want us to to pay monthly or so to pay for exclusive sets?! Pass!

It was just a survey in the first place with several ideas they had in mind. Surveys are made to see wether there is demand for something, and there was not much demand for it it seems. I mean you can never know if they won´t come up with something similar, but for now I don´t think they have any plans to do it.

Thanks for the elaborate answer

I still see issues though. If they indeed have a stock of old sets and people who subscribe have a chance to get these olds sets, they will eventually run out of these sets and people will get mad while the sets themselves will appear on the secondary market for astronomical prices. Only scalpers will profit.

On the other hand, if they re-release old sets (with new parts replacing parts that are not in production anymore), Lego would probably make more money if they sell the sets to anybody.

We'll see what the future brings but i somehow doubt this will work out. Anyway, personally i have zero interest in a subscription :shrug_confused:

As I remember it, the idea (and it was an idea, not implemented and unlikely to) was that there would be an additional tier of the VIP programme, where people could purchase old sets - exactly how old was never made clear, and I seem to remember discussion on these forums as to what form it might take. (The most common suggestion seemed to be that you would order a set from a list of options, but they would only produce the set when they reached a certain amount of orders - so as to justify the cost of bringing back old moulds/parts. Lego would quickly lose money if they were retooling decades-old moulds for literally one person to buy). As this would inevitably be a niche thing, and by no means mandatory, a small premium doesn't seem outlandish.

(That said, I also don't actually remember it being a given that there would be a charge. My recollection is that a lot of different suggestions were floated in the survey - the subscription fee and the old sets catalogue were distinct elements there)

Even on EB - which is probably one of the sites most predisposed to being in favour - there seemed to be a lot of people unenthused by the idea. I'm of an age where I missed a lot of the classic sets, and now they're almost all out of my price range, so re-releases would be perfect for me, but a lot of people either already have the main classic sets or would rather Lego spent the time and money on new designs

One of the questions actually was how much you were willing to pay for it. Plus they also had other ideas they wanted to implement, it wasn´t just about the abo for old sets, though of course that is what most people kept of the survey ;).

That beeing said, I liked some ideas, but of course not the idea of a monthly subscription. And without that I guess it just isn´t worth it financially for them.

Rather than retooling molds couldn’t they just do modernised remakes and make them direct to customer?

A lot of older parts / molds had problems with structural integrity etc. And even if they did remold them, you’re never, ever getting printed parts. Every detail on older bricks would 100% be stickers.

Greedy idea cashing in on people missing the originals or simply being born too late.

 Gross.

They're already doing that in some cases but it's not the same imo. For me at least the appeal of old sets is specifically the old parts that you can't get any more except on the second-hand market - if I'm getting a modern set I'd rather they didn't limit themselves to the silhouette of an old set

Better pictures of the upcomming CMF are out. The pirate lady looks better than expected and it looks like she comes with some kind of a cloth skirt. Too bad the arms are dual molded, as they become useless because of the yellow  The cockatoo looks great!

There was nowhere stated that they would be one to one copies as far as I remember. And while it seems possible they would bring parts back in production for it, especially if they would be preordered and they would just have to set produce the number of parts needed, so they wouldn´t take up storage capacity. I doubt that they would bring back retired moulds however, and the sets would have probably closes copies, but not 1:1 copies of the sets.

I wonder if that poll is the reason we've been getting a few retail remakes of large classic sets and GWP remakes of smaller ones.

I'm juste a little disappointed by her hair, it's not new. Maybe not in this color but I definitely have seen it in yellow.

I'm guessing it's a bit testing the waters for the LEGO group. There must've been some kind of demand visible in the poll.

Read the old thread from 2010 about the initial hype and release of the POTC sets. The list of sets being released, the preliminaries coming out, everyone weighing in their thoughts about the sets, first reviews rolling out. I don't remember a theme making me so excited in a very long time. I wish I was older when the theme came out so I could experience that hype and buy all the sets. Nowadays only UCS sets bring anything to the medieval/pirate table. How good we had it. And back then I was just a little kid who loved pirates and only ended up getting the london escape, but I treasured that set and my brick beard's bounty. They were my everything. I was reading the thread and getting so sad realizing how long ago 2011, my childhood, and Lego's golden age (2008-2014 I WILL fight over this) was. I recognized quite a few faces from that thread that are still active today and how maybe in 14 years people will look at this thread the same way. I just miss pirate sets man, no other theme captures the same feeling as pirate sets do for me. I feel like a little kid again pretending to be a pirate. I really hope we get something in 2026(what a scary number) as 2025 seems to be barren for us except for the BDP set in late 2025....Sorry for the rant.
