I love the direction TLG is taking. For such a long time, people have been developing their own MOC's of dwarves, trolls, etc and were hoping for official Lego releases of these. When I saw the downloadable coloring pages for dwarves at lego.com I almost pissed on myself. Just like most of you who are sentimental when it comes to forestmen, wolf pack (I am), you will also feel the same about dwarves, orcs, trolls if you were a kid growing up now with LEGO. The times you guys had with those sets (me included) will always be the main reason for why when you think back you love those sets so much. I think it would be tragic to pass up on such wonderful sets right now because you know what........they most likely will not return. Lego will most definitely come out with new "human" knight factions... .....but how about trolls? Dwarves? Orcs? That's pretty hard.

What's all this talk of elves?

As much as some fans are all for an entirely fantasy-themed line, I'm not sure that it's a great idea. I can only speak for myself, but I suspect that there are others like me who would simply skip this line without major human presence (read Crown Knights, civilians, new soldiers, forestmen, etc.). In fact, other than the Advant calender and a few impulse sets (as well as a ton of armour from Helge on Bricklink), I have no intention of buying any of this year's castle sets. I have very little need of skeletons and orcs. Alot of castle fans are just that: fans of LEGO castle. Moving away from that foundation into pure fantasy simply doesn't provide me with anything useful as a castle builder.

Right now, if next year's line reduces the human presence even further in favour of something like Elves, Lizard Men or any other fictional race I'll pass on the line entirely. I know that I'm not alone on this. I would even suspect that there are alot of kids who like the knights, soldiers and other more conventional medieval fare. For me, next to no humans=no sale.

I agree that having no Humans would be an awful thing, but have you ever seen a fantasy movie, read a fantasy book etc that does not have them. I believe that is what TLC is going for even if they missed the boat by about 2 years. I think not wanting all these unique races puts you in the minority as an adult, and an overwhelming minority as a child. This stage of fantasy will pass, and more human factions will be produced again but you might have to wait a few years.

I think the best way to keep both sides happy were if the next two factions in 2009 were an Elves faction, and a Dark Humans faction. No doubt the Crownies, being the heroes of the line, will be in each wave anyway ;-)

perhaps if they bring in elves, why not dark elves too? two rival factions, who could easily ally themselves with the humans and skellies.

steel...

But eleves are sassy no matter wether they're dark or regular...

Really...the most annoying character in LOTR is LEGOLAS.

C'mon guys You can do better than wish for pointy-eared-men-in-tights.

I say bring on the Barbarian Horde or Dark Crownies.

I don't disagree that there are alot of fans (particularly children) who would love nothing but fantasy. Heck, most would probably be just as happy never to see another knight, peasant or forestman for the rest of their LEGO building days. That doesn't mean that there aren't those of us who do like those things. I would suspect that Elves were introduced that it would probably mean that there would be no human figs in next year's line. With Dwarves, Skeletons, Orcs, and Trolls already in the mix, the human characters could easily be trimmed from the line alltogether when Elves are thrown in. While this probably wouldn't bother you, for many of us it makes all the difference in the world.

I'm inclined to believe that most of you fantasy fans would buy a castle set that features humans so long as you get a helping of fantasy folk to go along with them. The reverse is true for many of us medieval (not fantasy) fans. Castle year one was such a hit because it provided something to both sides. This year's line weighs towards the fantasy side of things, but still offers a few nuggets to the conventional castle fan including the impulse sets and the Advant Calender. If you drop all of the traditional medieval elements for a pure fantasy line, some fans will drop the line.

I'm actually believe that the fantasy phase will probably not pass. In fact, I believe that this is likely to become the standard in the future. As you noted, fantasy cliches are incredibly popular. This more than anything else is why I would like to see something like peasants before any possibility of that ever happening is lost. LEGO's competitors have long since abandoned conventional medieval fare for the dragons, orcs and other such fantasy creatures. I don't see the pendulum swinging the other way on this issue. You say that this stage will pass and more human factions will be produced. Right now I kind of doubt that. If the line drops human figs alltogether, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see the knights and soldiers return again.

I think thats a grossly enormous exaggeration, of course we will see soldiers and knights again. Fantasy ALWAYS has knights and soldiers anyway, and as I've stated before, the crownies are still the main protaginist of the line, so don't be surprised if they are in wave 3 ;-)

I like the sound of that. Throw in some villagers and everybody would be happy :-D

Blueandwhite, I understand that you really like a Human vs Human Castle line, and I also understand your concern that Human factions will disappear altogether. However, I don't share your pessimistic view on the matter. There have always been Human factions in the various Castle themes and even in fantasy books and movies the focus is nearly always on Humans. So I really don't see TLC producing a Castle line without any Human faction. Besides, I wouldn't be at all surprised when TLC decides to do a Human vs Human Castle line a few years from now, since a fantasy theme has already been done then.

What about centaurs. Pretty much a horse with the head chopped off, and an attachment point attachment point for a minifig torso.

Those would be side kicks for the elves.

The bad guys would get minoutaurs and barbarians or giants.

The more I think about that and the more I think we need civilians in cool smaller sets !! That maoden and jester is a good sign of things to come I sure hope.

I mean factions fighting each others is pretty cool but will loose interest after a while so thats why I want a civilian incursion !! We could have a sweet impulse troubadour, some merchent rolling stables filled with fruits and meat, small houses and what have you !! Afterall, the crownies need to serve and protect :-D

Actually, *yoda* makes a brilliant point! TLC finds it hard to incorporate civilians into large sets because kids prefer weapons to stables, but the impulse line is the perfect way to get civilians. Think of it, a jester impulse, maiden impulse, farmer impulse, the list goes on! :'-)

Indeed ;-)

For figs with not really that much accessories we could get impulse sets + for other figs with a bit more building a 5

I think there is a possability we might get impulse civilains, and agree with you it would be a good idea. But I doubt we'd get larger sets until something like impulse civilains was proved maybe 2010?

I agree, TLC atleast needs to try civilian impulses, no doubt they would be huge sellers, castle folk world over would fork out money to get a heap. The advent calender gives us hope!

Like a Maid with a broom, a rat, and a bucket. A farmer with a rake, a shovel and a pickaxe. They would make killer impulse sets, imagine the sales from AFOLs!

Killer indeed !! Imagine the possibilities: a whore house & an angry mob !! That would rock !! Ig they did that I woyuld need loads of black carrots X-D

:-D , that would be hilarious! :-D

An angry mob member would make a nice impulse though *wub* , or, keeping in a bit with TLC's policy, a civilian with a torch and spear.

A whorehouse would be a very interesting development from lego though :-D

Well we always complain we need more women, though maybe not the best way to get good publicity for this family company.

Second degree humour ? Nan ??

i like citizien and town folks, but, boys, it's impossible that TLC made impulse town/folk set...

impulse: a little cost set that a child sees and says: mum, buy it for me?

do you think (really) that a child can sees a farmer and says: wow a farmer, fantastic, i wont it...

no!

Children want soldiers, wizards, monsters, ogres, dragons, not farmer or little girls with carrots and bunnies...

so we can hope for impulse citizien but really for me is yet good if TLG made a dwarf impulse set...

I don't agree with you here. Look at Playmo's line up especially in their "special" set (1 fig and accessories). They have loads of town people and not only knoghts and what have you.

At the end of the day I think the real test will be the advent calendar: if it sells well (which will big time IMO), we will see those kind of impulse sets ;-)

well I always believe that playmobil is for a different target (playmobile: little women of 6-10 years, lego: little boy of 8-99 years :-P ) but maybe i'm in wrong...

at the end i'm still thinking that a farmer cannot have appeal for a child...

that's for sure!

cross your fingers! ;-)
