I would estimate that I have some 20 to 30 thousand spare Technic elements lying around at any given time.

how many technic sets do you own

According to Brickset i've got aprox 76,000+ parts. Furthermore i've bought/received  about 20,000+ parts in various batches/boxes. Most of the parts are build in sets, MOCs and Doodles. ...

But any set is prone to scavenging for (spare)parts....

I have taken apart about 10 Technic sets, all and all I have around 55000 elements in my collection.

I have these sets on display:

8868 8862 8110 8482 8258 8285 8459 42054 the blue fury and a massive Actros MOC (6000 parts)

The rest is in pieces.

parts left or parts build in models, or all parts in complete?

Yes...based on the comments I should have said parts NOT from the models people have built. Spare parts or extras bought In etc.

Spare Parts.....over 1M ....not even a question...I keep thinking I have them for a reason but the reality is its time to sell them off.    In addition, a MOC collection 2nd to only Blakbird and nearly every Technic set ever (some omissions for recent non-flagship sets).

I keep most of my models built, so spare Technic parts is maybe 4k (5k tops).  Plus a 42042 & 42063 not yet built.

Edit: I'm not sure the basis for your question, so I will assume it pertains to how much you should have available for building.  If I were an avid Technic moc builder, I would probably want to keep around 25k or more on hand for projects.  This amount also depends on the scale of the projects.  More is often better.

All my LEGO parts are spare parts. I never keep anything built for long.

Similar here, although my models have been hanging around for longer. Typically it will last until I scavenge parts such as a gearbox or pneumatic cylinder for another model. I have no idea how many parts are spare; I guess somewhere around 1,500 are unused at any time. It's a small technic collection at present, 42006 being my biggest set. Only 1 or 2 (pushing it) technic MOCs can be built at a time, but parts may be stolen from elsewhere.

According to Rebrickable I have 1,285 spare parts not in sets just from my bricklink orders I have made, I'll add about 5k to that from other garage sale buys and round up to say about 6.5k spare parts, probably less though.

About 200k for Technic. Double that if I include Non-Technic (e.g. Classic, Friends, Elves, Ninjago, Bionicle, Chima, FLL ...). Just like NYChase, I think it's about time to offload and recoup usage of one bedroom.
