What if everyone had to try this to the same set, and there could be multiple categories for different sets?

I'm open to ideas. That sound good and would be easier to vote. Fore example we do a set from every theme? Sieggy sugested a space contest sine there hasn't been one in awhile. I just wanted to get my contest idea out there. How it's judged and set up in categories doesn't matter to me.

I see a space set being difficult to weather. No air and no real weather to speak of. Maybe that's just me, sorry. Just trying to help with ideas.

Sieggy was insinuating that. I was thinking more of a history set, city set, or some licensed theme. The ship could (crash) land on a planet and weather.

I thought it was to be a Trains and Town contest (Mainly town), and the idea would be that one city/town/train set would be chosen by the staff, and all participants would try to "weather" it. Then, for different categories, different sized sets would be chosen. That way, it is less eclectic and you aren't faced with the decision of choosing between one large MOC or several small MOCs.

Oooops! My mistake. I guess I read it wrong. I like the idea of a specific set where everyone does their own weathering. Keeping the set under $20US gives the members A LOT OF OPTIONS to vote for.

I'd like to wait until there aren't many contest gonig on. Why $20 and below? I'd really like to see some big ships and sets weathered. This probably isn't going to be a big contest. I doubt it will get many entries. I don't think I could provide great prizes either. Is it fine if I wait until there aren't many contest going on to start it? I'll post here when I come up with more infomation.

No worries, I didn't make myself as clear as I could've. One of the other things I was suggesting was for different categories, have different priced sets.

The staff are the ones who run the contests, so I don't think you have to worry about that .

So you guys have plans to make this into a big contest? Yoah, I didn't think you guys would like my idea that much. I'll let the staff so what they need to do. Hopefully I won't be forgotten in this contest.

For my idea there could be price range sections. Some of the most beutiful sets are expensive. Here are some possible divisons.

$9 and under

$10-$30

$30-$60

$60 and above

Those are just some suggestions. They could be clser or farther apart. If any members have a comment reguarding my contest idea feel free to contact me.

I might have mentioned this before, but with there being a Disney license now, I really think it would be great if we would have some kind of Disney contest. It could either be a contest for designing a set for one of the disney movies or a vignette contest to recreate a scene from your favorite disney movie.

Also, I think a space contest is quite overdue. Lego Space is one of the most imaginative Lego themes, and a contest could result in some very creative MOCs! It should be a contest where you can make a MOC for any space subtheme you like. For example, it could be a contest where all the subthemes of Lego space compete in a race around the Lego galaxy, and the challenge would be to build a futuristic high-speed vehicle for one of the subthemes. There could be two categories, land and space vehicles, or we could limit it to space ships. What do you think?

Oh, and another interesting idea I had was having a contest about creating a vignette based on your favorite song. I have seen several MOCs with that idea in mind already, and I thought a contest could be interesting.

Er--- is there a list where we can see what kind of contests have been sugested and which ones have already taken place?

I recently came up with the idea of an "Update"-Contest. Pick your favorite set of the past (at least older than 5 years) and try to imagine how this particular set would look today. Something similar has been done with classic space recently, if I recall right.

A variation of that could be: Pick a classic city themed set and reinvent it in the CC standard.

or: pick any 4 or 6 wide vehicle and rebuild it to allow two minifigs to sit in it. (arms may not be taken apart, original vehicle housing one minifig only, no matter the size)

I had a idea. I've noticed for licensed contset you have three catergories. So, here's my idea.

Toy Story Contest

catergory 1: Build a movie scene

catergory 2: build s toy

catergory 3: build a starcommand ship or veichine

It hit me today-the greatest contest idea ever. It would be the most epic MOC contest ever. It would involve EVERYONE and entries of EVERYTHING. The contest would be called:

THE BATTLE OF THE THEMES CONTEST

If you don't know what I mean yet, but it would be a battle to decide which is the best LEGO theme EVER.

So here's how it would work-everyone has to pick a side to MOC for. They can only MOC for THAT THEME (preferably their favorite). Contestants will have 3 months to build their entries, the longer the better because then everyone will be able to do their best. Also, team leaders (mods, regulators of that theme) will be able to give entrees suggestions on how to improve their entries.

Everyone will vote to nominate Champions from each theme. The Champions will win $100-$200 worth of sets from their respective themes. No runner's up prizes. The Champions will receive tags that say "BEST xyz MOCER!".

After that, the Champions will duke it out in a tourney in which they'll have one month to make something for each bracket.

The Grand Champion will receive a $400-$500 giftcard to PayPal, as well as a special tag that says "BEST MOCER FROM THE BEST THEME EVER". Mods/regs from the winning theme will also receive "BEST THEME EVER" tags.

So what do you guys think?

Posted

Hmm, I don't think you're authorized to hand out tags, also who is going to provide the prize money?

Its not a bad idea, but there are more fans of certain themes, which means voting might be levied towards the more popular themes, which wouldn't be totally fare.

The Root admins would be the judges. Of course I wouldn't be the one to organize it. Just an idea.

I know, maybe judges could decide for the final tourneys?

I don't really get the purpose of this competition (other than to have fun building and win prizes, which applies to every contest here). Why put so much effort, time and money in finding out something that could be solved with a simple poll titled "What's your favorite theme?"?

I'm not trying to put you down, but it is obvious that you don't really know what it takes to organize a contest of these proportions. TLG doesn't automatically award fansites with sets or gift cards worth thousands of dollars, you know? And the cross-theme scale of the contest is just too big for anybody to handle, I think, with numerous entries coming from a dozen themes or so.

In theory your idea is of course fantastic, but I really don't believe it would work on a practical level, sorry.

A much better idea would be to have a competition with a theme by theme level of rounds (elimination or not) thereby encompassing all themes without a bias. However the scale is truly terrifying. A similar thing was run on MOCPages called the MOCathalon and it was intense but fun to be a part of. Perhaps you should head on over there next April to try your luck in a team environment if that is fun to you. I myself found it an amazing experience as it pushed me outside my comfort zone to MOC things I hadn-t tried before.

The main problem is that not all themes are created equal and no theme is perfect. Just because more people like it doesn't make it the best theme. There isn't nearly enough information in this tournament to dub one theme 'Best'. A contest could at most only prove 'Which theme translates best into LEGO', and that wouldn't make it the best theme.

Castle will be cheaper than Wild West, because Castle has more readily-available parts to make the MOC more realistic.

City will always be more popular than Toy Story because City doesn't require you to be a fan of a movie to be a fanatical buyer.

Star Wars will always be easier to build something new and creative than Racers because it has a constantly expanding definitive story line.

...and so on.

Every theme has it's pros and cons.

Plus, as has been pointed out, you don't have the authority or the manpower to organize this and dish out the prizes.

Sounds kinda like the LDD contest to me, except with real MOCs and a different voting system.

I agree completely. Different themes are different themes and should be treated as such. Saying one theme is better than the other just because somebody managed to make a good MOC for it would result in disagreement and maybe even a flame war. :sadnew: In the words of a wise jedi master: "I have a bad feeling about this..."

Besides, we all know it's Star Wars. (Just kidding of course!)

I have to agree, this doesn't seem like the best idea. To start off, like others have said, everyone has an opinion, and every theme has it's pros and cons. I mean, how is a theme like, Avatar, with only two rare sets, supposed to stand against somthing like Star Wars? And ho far does that span, four months? That's a little long for a contest, isn't it?
