Hi everyone,

I have already posted this gearbox in the Gearbox collection thread started by Didumos69, but now that I have finished the instructions (as promised@mocbuild101, here you are :-)) I thought it would be a good occasion to start a specific thread on this gearbox.

I am currently working on a MOC which has this gearbox implemented (will start a topic for that one in the near future as well), for which I had some specific requirements: I wanted manual operation on standard LEGO 5+R configuration, but with a gearstick that would pivot in all directions from a single point (like in real car). Apart from that, I wanted a center console that was not more than 5 studs wide, so the gearbox had to be moved away from the gearstick.

I took my inspiration by Thirdwigg's 6speed gearbox from his Cadillac ATS supersedan, Crowkillers 4speed gearbox from his Asassin X19 and the 5+R gearbox from Nathanaël Kuipers' Predator. I ended up mixing them all with some inspiration from the 42054 Claas steering mode selector as well.

Note: the version in the instructions is using the new DGB driving rings and red clutch gears, they actually give a more solid build (when I shot below pic and vids I had already used mine in aforementioned MOC, so I converted it to the old rings and wheels. Works fine as well, just a bit less solid).

  • Manually operated
  • Direct operation
  • special features: single pivot point for gearstick, linkage to gearbox, fits in 3studs wide center console
  • number of gears: 5 forward, neutral and reverse

Here's some vids (apologies for noob quality...) and the instructions:

Enjoy and let me know what you think of it.

@Rudivdk, it's great, wow!  I'd note that you can also add a couple of liftarms and a rubber band around the LBG 4-L thin liftarm that rotates the linkage and get a "return to center lever" feature like in real cars (inspired by "return to center steering" assembly).

Thanx! True about return to center, but I used friction pin on the center console, so that would have to be modified as well. Will make whole gearstick assembly 1 stud longer, and that didn't fit in my MOC...

Thanks @Rudivdk. I'm happy my ATS gearbox gave your design some inspiration. I hope to see this included in a full car soon. May I suggest a sedan? Again, well done.

Thanx for appreciation. Actually your whole ATS MOC inspired me, but I went a step further away from regular supercar... My MOC is a 7seater familycar (european style 'MPV') with fully functional interior with folding seats and all. Stay tuned for that one...

Nice, I'm glad you made PDF instructions - not LDD or some other type - it makes it much easier to build!

My pleasure! LDcad and LPub3D are a powerfull and easy combination, to my own surprise I finished it in one evening.

Superb transmission! It will be interesting to collect. thank you very much)

Thanx for your kind words!

That is very clever but also simple design.

I have been struggling with similar linkage idea but for transverse mounted gearbox (and engine)...so far no satisfying solution ?

Thanx! Final result is pretty clean and simple indeed, but it was a long road getting there...

I've been thinking about transverse gearbox as well, but it would introduce an extra level of complexity switching the movement of the gearlever 90 degrees towards the gearbox. And it would become wider as well I think. Maybe one day I'll attempt 1:8 scale building, then it might be doable...

I've never found any of these types of designs to be very reliable and they seem to get out of sync quite easily.

I have it built inside my 7 seater family car moc for over a year now, not using it regularly, but my 3 and 5 year old boys play with it now and then. Never any problems with shifting or getting out of sync. In my build it is 'encased' in a framework of 5x7 frames and beams, so pretty darn formlocked. I think the structure around a gearbox is the key for that gearbox working or not...

Edit: as shown above it is really flimsy indeed, the frame is just there to put all things in place and show the POC.

That was my idea, but for even bigger scale - for 1:6.5 scale; I have 3 cylinder LPE for that purpose...

Starting to thing about space, I'm afraid, that I will need to use standard approach, to fit everything in length. But I can have wide middle tunnel.
