Yay! I was looking at the Wiltopia set the other day thinking how lucky the Playmobil fans were and hoping the best we might get could one day be a wombat. Didn't realise the cockatoos (also included in the wombat set) were going to surprise me next! Let's hope Lego City goes Down Under next year!

Gecko is definitely on my list - it honestly seems perfect for lego since snot techniques could easily let them climb up walls.

Very happy to see a wolf mould from Lego (finally!) The cockatoo is a pleasant surprise as well, as is the new cat mould (hoping for better pictures soon). I look forward to picking these up in January!

Have just done a quick tally of the ‘new’ animal moulds which CMFs have given us over the years. It’s fair to say that it’s only relatively recently that they have been pretty consistent, and licensed series -perhaps not unexpectedly- have not yielded very many, but where they have been exceptions, they have been great!

The total of new animal moulds introduced via CMFs, up to and including Series 27, is TWENTY NINE animals.

Of those only 5 have come from licensed series : one each Marvel series (small croc and small owl), one from The Lego Batman Movie * (lobster). and two from Harry Potter* (rat and python).

The numbered ‘normal’ series have launched 24 new animals, so that’s less than one per series on average, and much less than one on average when all licensed series are included. The series yielding most new animals is a tie between Series 19 (flamingo, chameleon, dachshund) and the upcoming Series 27** (wolf, cockatoo and new cat).

Regular viewers will not be surprised that I have not included fantasy animals, mohawk cats, rubber duckies, plushies or cartoony sidekicks. Nor have I included recolours, reprints or reuses.

The Breakdown 

ONE new animal mould in each of:

S11 - cat; S13 - cobra; S15 - skunk; TLBM - lobster; S18 - mouse; S20 - small turtle; S21 - hermit crab; Marvel 1 - small owl (smowl); Marvel 2 - small crocagator.

TWO new animals each in:

S10 - gull, chihuahua; S16 - terrier, penguin; S17 - rabbit, French bulldog, Harry Potter & Fantastic Beasts - rat, python; S22 - foal, toucan; S24 - falcon, koala; S25 - Afghan hound, goat***.

THREE new animals in:

S19 - chameleon, flamingo, dachshund; S27 - wolf, cockatoo, ‘Persian’ cat …

 

 

* these appeared almost simultaneously with the mould’s use in new sets -so I have asssumed that CMFs claim these!

** from the one photo we currently have. Will be happily corrected if there’s a missing beastie or cat not showing in that image.

*** we know the goat is very similar but it’s technically a new mould, so it counts.

Wolves are a real animal how is it a super controversial taboo topic?  I'm curious.  Here in the US wolves were extinct in certain parts of the country and in the last couple of decades we just got them back in the northeast.

I don't know what the issue is regarding wolves in Europe, curious to know also.  I know here in Colorado there are those who welcome the reintroduction efforts and those who are vehemently opposed.  I believe it's the same in other states.  I considered getting the special wolf plate when I bought my car last year but was worried some nut job might vandalize my vehicle because of the wolf plate.

Yeah I know some farmers have issues with the reintroduction here in the US.  It is highly debated in some area's.  I am curious what the issue is in Europe also.

If you have made a graph I am sure we would have seen clearly that new animal moulds have become more common. From memory series 1-10 rare, 11-20 expect 1 or 2, 11-27 expect at least 2. Themed ones and licensed ones have less, but has been a increase there as well,
However looking colser at the cat in series 27 I think it might just be a recolour of the normal adult in white for the first time If so series 19 is still on top alone

I still think that’s a new cat, so until I’m proved wrong by other pics, I’m keeping it in. If nothing else, why have a ‘cat lover’ figure at this stage without a new cat!?

My apologies for the ominous wording making the issue sound more interesting than it is  Yeah, the issue is whether wolves should be allowed to roam free or be shot on sight. On the one hand, they butcher sheep without actually eating them afterwards, and on the other, they‘re rather rare and thus protected. They used to be extinct here for quite a while too, same as bears.

The discussions get heated with some wanting to (illegally) kill all of them and making up silly fearmongering arguments (like them eating children next ) and others trying to protect them. Personally, I think mindless killing is never a good solution, but publicly stating something like that would already put me in hot water here

That is super interesting!

1. Farm sets in City must be selling well, especially tractors (and my guess sets with a lot of animals) since they release it back to back with the current one that has been on shelf's since 2021
2. That will bring the sheep mould back into circulation after only a year

I do not expect 4 sheep in the set like this, but have hopes for more than one, maybe even a recolour

I suppose there is some opportunity to see some new animals there...

Holiday Adventure Camper Van - there was a Playmobil campervan set with raccoons or perhaps time for a fox. My vote would be something North American like a moose or a bison (e.g. set in Yellowstone or a National Park)

Lifeguard Beach Rescue Truck - the last lifeguard tower came with a re-colour of the turtle. I wouldn't mind seeing the CMF turtle back as it looked better in olive green and would be nice to see the corresponding larger version. An opportunity for a new 'wings-tucked-in seagull' or a pelican as well . My preference would be for sea lions.

Off-Road 4x4 Mountain Truck - something like a big horn sheep would be wonderful. I'd love this to be the Andes mountains and see a llama though.

Are there any other upcoming sets for this year we haven't yet seen? The Botanical Garden Friends version had ducks and butterflies. Also, the Shackleton ship could potentially include more seals/penguins. I can't see them introducing a new mould for either of these sets and not hopeful.

Which concerns new animals for the City winter wave, @lifeinplastic, I could well imagine that Lego gives us the sheep in black (instead of white which we already have). One completely new animal mould might well be possible, but I bet only a small one and for sure not more than one.

I think I would have singled the same sets as having animal potential, alongside the tractor.

We should also remember the trend of introducing random and unexpected dogs, kittens, squirrels in City sets in recent years. There could well be a new dog guarding the scrapyard, for example!

I think I expect the sheep to stay in the colours it is, though I’d like to see a recolour using a tan fleece and white legs/head. Outside chance that we get a new ram in this set, though personally I’d prefer say a couple of sheep and a new (collie) sheepdog.

Lifeguard set I’d predict has an existing animal reused, like the small turtle or dolphin.

For the Holiday Campervan to have an adventure suggests some wilderness or wild things - might be a reach but could be a mountain scenery build and critter to ‘go with’ the Off-Road mountain truck. In the past though campervans and caravans shave usually had a forest / lake location across Lego themes. So maybe something new there or a wolf lurking by the campfire 🤣

Mountain 4x4 I’d expect to have some scenery build and an animal - or else how is it ‘mountain’? A good place for a recolour of the eagle mould for a gold eagle, or a proper craven…

the tractor set seems to be a €20 4+ set. We should temper our expectations of a gargantuan flock!

Looks liked City info is leaked. City winter wave has a LOT of cars but it’s potential that we might get a few animals, such as lifeguard resuce truck, tractor with shee trailer, and camper. No details revised other than set numbers and name. 

Oh and please kee in note, animals might turn up in “less promising” sets like car sets.. for example, police academy set came wiht new put mold a few years ago.

It could include more than that. The expedition had a large number of sled dogs to facilitate the overland portion of their trip to the South Pole. And there was also a ship’s cat named Mrs. Chippy (male). Admittedly, none of the animal crew members had the happy endings the human ones did, which might be a reason for lego to gloss over them.

We gots your crocodiles, spoiders, snakes, cockatoos, koalas, shaaaarks … filling out an Australian subtheme is eminently doable, and would just need a key animal 🦘🖤🦢 mould or two to make it awesome

We are decades-overdue for a pigeon at this stage. Similarly the ‘City’ theme is wide enough to allow other critters to show up - Australian cities have cockatoos, for example, or ibises raking through their bins, and North American cities are racoon territory

Or they may just recolor the Raven from Dreamzzz to make an actual Raven.

I hope there is an animal in the Mountain 4x4 set.  

It will be nice to get more sheep for my castle/fantasy set up.  A recolor of the sheep would be great.  

I'm guessing the campervan to have probably a squirrel and maybe a bird or even a rabbit.
