Latest news about Lego animal moulds

Penguins - from the CMF series and the recent Lunar New Year skating rink

Elephants - from recent City Safari sets

Flamingos - from the CMF series, although would prefer the legs to be re-coloured to look less like garden ornaments

Camels (from Prince of Persia - these need to be re-introduced in current sets)

Ostriches (from Prince of Persia - these need to be re-introduced in current sets)

Crocodiles (I wish the new baby matched the dark green colour)

Turtles - I prefer the CMF coloured version to the recent City lifeguard set

Toucans - from the CMF series

Most wanted - giraffes, hippos, sea lions, sloths, llamas and koalas (it is ridiculous that we have a giraffe and llama costume minifigs but no actual versions of these animals, yet new moulds are made for useless features such as the helmet with pigtails, like in the new Stuntz sets)!

Actually Penguin figure in CNY Ice Rink is a Freinds mold, not a City one. :) 

And for me, I want to see TLG make some new molds - raccoon, moose, fox, terrestrial turtle (not flippers), panda, giraffe, hippo, lemur, meerkat, kimono dragon, bison, ostrich. They are not just for zoo I would build. I prefer adding them to my animal kingdom. :) 

I feel like we will see giraffe and llama pretty soon, given that Freinds theme already gets giraffe and llama recently.

the new black cub is coloured to be a black panther, but curiously on some of the accompanying artwork it’s shown as a very dark-coloured puma (which don’t really exist).

I do love the PoP camels and ostriches. Glad I picked those up. Really keen to see a flamingo recolour too, in coral or light pink.

Cow, calf, pig, piglet, sheep, lamb, gray rabbit, brown chickens too. :)

I think we need bear cubs.

The Ice Rink has both penguins - the trans Friends one, and the standard city one.

I do sometimes love the imagery your software typos throw up @DBlegonerd7 - a Kimono Dragon sounds amazing ;)

Now you've made me want nothing more than a coral-coloured flamingo! I went to Celestun in Mexico about 15 years ago and loved the boat trip to the flamingo lagoon. I'd also love to go to Laguna Colorada in Bolivia - the pink flamingos against the deep blue sky = beautiful!

I know. I’ve been getting the Harry Potter advent calendars since they introduced them and haven’t really been concerned about the city ones since there was never anything particularly exclusive in them like there was with the licensed ones. But now they’re introducing new baby animal colors! So torn.

I think I may need to get the city one this year.  I haven't bothered with it the last few years.  There's also a cute baby reindeer and another small animal in the Friends Advent Calendar Picture.

The baby reindeer in Friends calendar is the same one that has been used in the Disney Frozen set.

I just picked up my Wildlife Rescue Mission set - and stoked to get the new animals. 🐊🦉🐇🐆

Can confirm that the baby crocagator has ‘normal’ black eyes, which is good for usefulness … but does mean there is totally NO consistency in crocagator eye colours or printing 🤷🏽‍♂️ 

New dark orange flying owl is an instant favourite. New hare just has eye printing, again simple black ones (rabbits have nose/mouth printing too). The panther cub is cute, with yellow eyes, pink nose, and grey printed muzzle.

Hey pal. Thanks for confirming - it’s a great news about baby gator’s eye print. I actually consider about picking it up! I’m in need of it to pair up with adult crocodile.

Yeah, they definitely seem to be using less reddish brown for animals, and the dark orange is punchier. But it does mean the printed perched owls and the printed flying owls don’t have direct counterparts (other than Hedwig). Still, this one is vastly superior to the tan BAM one, in my humble opinion … ;)

Think the other good thing is that the baby of course can just represent a smaller species if you want it to. It’s only a ‘baby’ if you want it to be. The lime green is nice, but also weird that they haven’t done any in olive green yet, seems like an obvious colour to go for.

Fantastic news that they reuse the CMF mould in a new colour this quick, maybe we can hope for a black or brown one in BAM so we can pair up the most common horse colours with a similar coloured foal

Me too, probably will end up getting both, but the HP one must be really good to beat the 3 animals in the City one this year

So, was just thinking where we are at with various recently ‘released’ animals that have only shown up once, especially seeing the new foal recolour coming in the City advent calendar.

The biggest source of new animal moulds has undoubtedly been the CMFs, with useable ‘normal’ animals showing up in many of the licensed themes as well as the classic CMF.

to that end, the animals that came in CMF which we haven’t seen show up elsewhere (BAM, other sets) are

- Flamingo

- Mouse 

- Hermit crab

- Toucan

the only other animal moulds that have *recently* been introduced, but only shown up once are 
- Otter (only available as transparent glittery patronus)

- Mammoth (only came in one set, and I’m stretching ‘recently’ here, as it’s been a few years now)

Is that about right? The pattern is definitely for animal moulds to be reused or show up in other sets or BAM variants. So we should expect them somehow. I’d love to see these critters get recolours, and to be honest it seems a wee bit odd that something like the mouse hasn’t done so already. 
 

(I’m not including fantasy creatures, mohawk creatures, ghost creatures, or Friendsified creatures)

I think it for some reason it is a bigger hurdle to climb from CMF to BAM/set then it is from set to BAM/other set. If I remember correctly the CMF are produced another place then normal parts so they must make a new mould or something like that to include them in sets So it was a very good sign the foal showed up that fast other times it has been years since the animal was in a set before it made the transfer.
I think it mainly has to do with where they can use them, flamingo and toucan probably need a subtheme that fits them and that do not show up so often. Mouse and hermit crab is more odd that we have not seen, the former are dual moulded  and the latter consist of several parts so it seems Lego prefer to use rat and crab instead maybe

Indeed. Still no real consistency though. Lest we forget that the rabbit, cat, chihuahua, gull etc all originated in CMFs before getting around. The double and triple moulding thing is a realistic concern, but that also begs the question, why invest in that design for just a one off? Also some creatures are clearly the draw for the CMF (such as the toucan) but others, including that complex dual-moulded mouse were really an added extra to a costume CMF that didn’t *need* a brand new intricately moulded accessory …
