The gun ports on my Constitution are also 3x3 and i've used different hingplates and covered the whole door with tiles.

Here are some thumb-links:

The doors are a little fragile, but they hold together real well if you're gentle. :-$

Captain Green Hair would suggest to put tiles at the bottom of each gunport to hide the studs.

This wouldn't be possible on about 1/4 of my gunports so i didn't do this.

These types of hinge plates were used:

4276.gif 4275.gif

These hinge plates are much more discrete, and i think they look better for port hole covers. *y*

For having your decks removable, i suggest only having the portion of the gundeck removable where the cannons aren't going to be tied on.

That's what i did on the Constitution, and it's real strong so far.

I frequently put it end on end to work on it and it never falls apart. *y*

The berth deck on my constitution is going to be easily accessible though cause i plan on having the entire portion under water removable.

Here are some thumb-links of the accessibility to the gundeck so far:

Great work on the improvements of the bow. *y*

I had a very hard time with the headrailing on my bow.

Yours seems to be coming together much better.

Hopefully my suggestions were helpful. :-$

P

Thank's for the suggestions phred *sweet*

I used the same technique as you on my masts and that worked out perfect.

As for the gunports' you confirmed my thougts on the hinge plates.

Thank you for that, I really needed a second opinion :-P

Do you happen to have a close-up of the technique you used for making your decks accessible? :-$

I'm a bit stuck on that part. I'm currently building the decks so that they can come of as a whole but it doesn't work out to well.

Btw your suggestions were more than helpful ;-)

As for Joey's question of her staying together

here's a pic of showing how sturdy she really is ;-)

The officers cabin's will be built in the rear part of the ship and the crew will be sleeping on the gun deck.

Nice ship lad! She is really massive. I like the color coordination and especially how the ship gets smaller toward the rear. The shape reminds me of the man-o-war they had on Master and Commander when they were looking at a model of the phantom ship.

Does it have a name yet?

Duke

And answering two questions at once

Her name is L'étoile meaning the star and therefore she is a french ship *sweet*

Goodness that thing is massive! I can hardly believe that is going to be a 24 gun frigate anymore.

So your moving on to the two-decker concept?

Not really :-P

She grew that's true, but only to become a 38 gun frigate (main battery) + 14 guns on the spar deck ;-)

Well... remember that i said my ship was sturdy enough.

It turned out not to be :pir-tongue:

My cats had decided to play a "let's pull the anchorcable" kinda game.

Here's the result:

dscn1079.jpg

dscn1078.jpg

This has happened quite some time ago. Maybe a month and a half or so.

But with school and me being the lazy bum i am, i never got around posting it.

Still, there is a positive side to all of this.

I was unhappy with the first version but i did'nt want to tear it all back down again.

So my cats took care of that problem for me.

Haven't got new pictures yet. But pretty soon i will be able to start the building again.

A few deliveries have made their way towards my place. And i got tuns of ideas for this next version.

I'll update the pics soon enough :pir-grin:

Here's a preview of the first version of the next version :pir-tongue:

Well, welcome back Errorist!

Darn cats!

They taste just like chicken in case you were wondering. :pir-wink:

Lookin forward to Version 2

BTW: Double posting is frowned upon when you've got 2 posts next to each other less than a day apart and they're short posts.

Ah yes, I remember my sister doing the same with my ship.

Except, that was the Red Beard Runner wich didn't have an anchor cable. :pir-tongue:

Damn was I furious. :pir-blush:

Sorry to hear about it. Good luck on rebuilding it!

Since i'm waiting for a new order of bricks i've been doing some designing with LDD.

This is the ship's galley:

lddscreenshot2.png

lddscreenshot3.png

This new order will contain the first blocks to build the galley and that enables me to hide my capstanmechanism. Double win!!! :pir_yoda:

oh, and the pictures of the ship will be updated some time soon :pir-grin:

Hmm, It seems familiar.

But i can't put my finger on where i've seen something like this. :pir-tongue:

Nice work on the Galley Errorist!

It's very detailed. I like the walls around the cooking area.

Those are pretty sweet looking.

They'd probably make great interior walls for a ninja building too. :pir-sweet:

Well i got some work done on the exterior of the ship and finalised the last version of the second version of the bow :pir-classic:

I got some photo's but most of them are pretty bad because my camera is old and crappy :pir-tongue:

But still:

dscn1089.jpg

I'm going to build moc-doors for the cabins (normal lego ones are to plain/big).

The big empty space in the middle is where the capstan mechanism will be hidden later on :pir-grin:

The ship is coming along nicely Mr. Errorist.

Are those cabins for the crew (sleeping places) or will they contain something else?

Posted (edited)
There is a lego door that's 1x3x4 that would work nicely there.

They're from homemaker sets in the '70s.

Here are the part-links:

-snip-

Those are indeed of perfect size :pir-oh: but it's a shame the door itself has a window.

Otherwise these would have been great. I couldn't find one without a window so i'm geussing they don't exist?

Well, looking at the way those cabins are disposed there they should be a place for the cannons, shouldn't they? :pir-look:

Answering both your questions at once :pir-grin:

These cabins are no sleeping quarters for the petty officers. Those will be located in the stern section.

They will be used for storage of weapons/medical supplies/tools/etc etc... Things to keep the ship in a well working state.

The largest one of these cbins will be the sickbay same as in the previous version.

Oh, and the deck you are seeing is the middledeck. This ship will be built with part of the underwater structure. The guns will be placed on the deck above, which would be the main battery.

I suppose you could throw a decal on the backside of the window to make it look like a solid door. :pir-blush:

That on the other hand I didn't think off yet :pir-blush: great idea thanks Phred!!! That would be the best option.

I redid the cabin layout and at the same time made sure the decks would come of easely.

Here's what the result looks like:

dscn1103.jpg

dscn1100.jpg

The white box next to the stairs is the place where the bottom part of the foremast would normally be.

But now it will hide the capstanwinches and some of the mechanism :pir-classic:

More pictures can be found in my BSfolder

Let me know what you guys think about the changes i made and suggestions are always welcome :pir_yoda:

Since this new batch of pictures shows more new progress i wanted to put them in a new post. :pir-blush:

I've got the first 6 gunports done:

dscn1112.jpg

dscn1115.jpg

I also started building my way up with the sides of the ship as you can probably see.

The plates that are sticking out of either side are the places where the ratlines connect to the schip. In time i will replace these plates with technic bricks though.

Also tell me what you guys think of the tumblehome effect. Does it look good? any suggestions? always welcome :pir-grin:

Oh and here's a better shot at my crew:

dscn1110.jpg

They are 149 men strong and this crew will grow to 200 maybe even 220 but we'll see.

I don't need the 300-350 men that the real ships of this type usually carried because I'm not building the entire ship. (yet)

The shape of the bow looks good, the headrails and anchor cable holes look great as well!

Just missing some pieces of string in those cableholes... :pir-tongue:

As for the tumblehome, i think the black 2x2x1 slopes are to steep, i think 2x2x2 slopes would look better..

Keep up the great work David!

Back again with a couple more pictures.

I got alot of work done on the ship this time.

s6002572.jpg

s6002563.jpg

This entire second part didn't exist yesterdaymorning

Captain, maybe the pieces of string are more clearly on this picture :pir-wink:

s6002581.jpg

As you guys can see I've started working on the simplest part of the interior.

Just a bit of lazyness from my side.

I'm hoping to get this part of the ship done before the supplies of some parts are drained though :pir-tongue:

As usual more pics can be found here.
