For the act of fishing, I would go for artisan, unless it is on a somewhat "industrial" scale, in which case plantation could work. If the build shows the trade of fish prominently, commerce can work too.

My fishermen in Elizabethville were licensed as plantation. It partly depends how you depict them. If they are fishing then I say plantation. Then you can build a fish shop or have them selling on the dock and have commerce.

My "fishing scene" ended up being licensed as a residence, because fishing was just a backstory for the build.  It really comes down to what the context is.

Can I get some feedback on my latest ship MOC idea? I made an Armored Brig with 40 guns (It's not completely finished yet), but I just want to make sure it is acceptable for the time period of BOBS. Also, would it work for the MRCA? Thanks!

For ship feedback and discussions, I'd suggest using the Shipwright's Guild Hall:

As to the brig in question, generally, the technological upper limit of BoBs is the napoleonic wars. And since armoured ships were not really a thing before the American civil war and the clash between the monitor and the Virginia, technically this would be outside the scope. HOWEVER, there is some room for alternative technological development in BoBs, and since strapping iron plates on the sides of the ship isn't exactly rocket science, even at that time, I think it can work if explained IC as an experiment or so. (Just don't make it a habit to us the boundaries. We don't want BoBs to scope out of the age of sail)

And since it will only get the same trait points as another ship of the same BoBs class it won't break the game. And I would expect it to be speed with low range, very low manoeuvre, but high firepower and hull stats, given that the iron will make her very heavy.

I don't know why I didn't even think about that... LOL! Thanks!

In the rules thread it says the time period is from the Age of Sail to about 1830. So I did some research and found out that the first historical use of iron on ships as armor was in 1839, which is pretty close to the end of the time frame... :look: I'll do some more building and research and then post it in the Shipwright Guild Hall. Thanks again @Bregir!

Hi Blackbird! Nice brig, it looks good, I like the black and red colour scheme. 40 guns, it's a heavily armed vessel, comparable to a heavy frigate. The iron plating is a good way to improve protection, I'm no expert but it appears that when we speak of sailships' armour, it mainly means hull strength, so I think a better "armoured" ship in the time frame of Bobs is a vessel with thicker wooden hull. Just a suggestion.

Add a third mast and call it a painted frigate lol Im not familiar with Ldd but could you simply recolor the brey brown? Its not a bad looking ship.

Thanks! I read in the rules that the timeframe of Bobs goes from the age of sail until about 1830. The first historical use of iron plating on ships was in 1837, so I figured it was close enough. I get what your saying about the thicker wooden hull. I've still got some improvements to do it, so I'll consider that.

I thought about it! I can make it pink and purple if I wanted too! :laugh_hard: Thanks!

Quick question regarding licenses... I know that you can only license 3 properties per month, but that is different from ship licensing right? Also, has the ability to license more than 3 properties per month been added yet or is that still in the works? Thanks!

The "3 license limit" is about land-based properties only. Your ship licenses are limited by your ship levels (the default level for players is 10, anything beyond needs to be payed for), not monthly.

As fr your second question: good question!

A small correction. You can license as many ships as you can build and afford, but only operate up to your ship limit each mrca.

And I do not believe we are planning to remove the three property limit. If you wish to build more, you can build larger properties.

Ok, thank you for clearing that up for me!

Really? I was hoping with the skill tree we could increase it. Any word on the skill tree in general?

Personally, I don't see any good arguments for increasing it. I think it will reward the wrong kind of behaviour. Already, the egs rewards quantity over quality, and I would rather see players spending more time on trimming and perfecting a few MOCs than pumping out high numbers. If we consistently saw players pumping out more than three large, high quality properties each month, I might see it differently. However, there are already so many things to build in BoBs hitting that limiter means you can turn to challenges, ships, AMRCA, story builds, collabs, etc.

As to the skill tree, it is on the list, but we have some other things we are working on that have to come first.

I completely agree with Bregir on that

Noone in the history of BoBS has been able to uphold the speed of more than three properties per month for more than four or five months. Sure, that means you will have to license your stuff later, but there will always be times where you cannot build too much anymore. Also there are challenges, ships, MRCA, story MOCs, duels, etc. that may (or may not) require MOC time.

Also with properties, as others have said, you can always go larger. Now try to MOC three large properties in one month, really really hard already. More than three royal properties is definitely impossible I'd say. :-)

Also I cannot echo the call for quality enough. Early on in the BoBS days I was all in for the money all the time, and rushed many MOCs towards the end of each month - which today I regret. Had I only waited for some days, lighting conditions and thus presentation would have been much better. Or I would have added some more details to the MOC, increased quality, maybe even rebuilt something. I have definitely reached the point that EGS and DBs does not matter at all to me anymore, and only MOC quality does. I assume we will all get there at some point, that EGS DBs aren't important to us anymore. And we all can always improve on our quality: So why not shift our focus immediately.

Great MOCs in your flickr account will last forever, and even now people may find my MOCs from months ago and favour them.

Properties and DBs though are just entries in a giant excel sheet. Noone will favour those. :-)

Well said @Elostirion Same here. I think I have learned much along the way though. And in the beginning I was very unsure if my builds would be good enough to post. Now I feel it is easier to see where I can improve my builds, but maybe I wouldn't have gotten there without all the constructive criticism.:pir-yoda: Hmm....

Quality comes with time and experience. For me it is natural to always try something new, and hopefully getting better for each build. We all have to start somewhere, and I think the quality creed is something personal that develops as one get involved in the story. Having fun, try and convey the ideas, and asking for constructive criticism is a good way to improve.

We can't stress quality, but as you say, take the time to do the idea justice. And one can always learn something new. :bonaparte: (Working on my diplomatic skills as well here :pir_laugh2:)

@Elostirion Well said! Though I would still like to see a Galleon, Frigate or Indiaman (just some large ship) from your hands...

I always prioritize other MOCs higher. Maybe I just like all the other MOC ideas better. Maybe I am even afraid of MOCing a larger ship again. And maybe some day I will do it, eventually. Thanks for encouraging me. :-)

Hey, if any of you aren't yet part of the flickr group and upload on flickr, why not join it and add your pictures to it? I've found flickr groups to be useful when looking for inspiration and having most BOBS builds in one would be fantastic.

Amuzing to read that after all this time people are turning round to one of the original starting ideas of BOBS, giving a reason to build and there by to improve ones quality of builds :p
