Amazing work. I'm currently looking into modding my 10030 but maybe i should start collecting parts for your ISD. Do you happen to know how many parts could be left out when it is build without the interior? The interior is really really nice, please don't get me wrong. But starting without it would make the project a little more "sane" concerning the parts count.

Cheers!

Awesome work once again Rasko! :D

The bottom looks very much like the one I am planning :)

A few questions: Which model/bluepint did you follow? When comparing to my own I can see we have a few proportions made differently :)

Regarding the brick count. I haven't really counted mine but my guess it is around 7000, while your have an interior I don't see that taking up 8k bricks? What am I missing? I could by way off on my own model though :)

Good job!

Thanks again, guys!

Good thing I have a vacation coming up in a few weeks, because I am crazy enough to do this.

Ha, I really hope you do.  And I second what Legolijntje said--any questions, just ask.

I definitely expected this question :)  Unfortunately, the model is built from the ground up with accommodating an interior in mind, so the internal structure is very robust and different from the 10030.  In order to shave a significant amount off the piece count, I think a major redesign of the basic structure (or adopting the basic structure of the 10030 or similar builds) would be necessary.  Also, if it was a display-only model, I'd probably have done some things differently with the exterior.

Thanks!

The reference material that I used most is a little Micro Machines Star Destroyer toy (I dunno if you guys have Micro Machines, but it's basically just a few-centimeter-long plastic Star Destroyer).  It's nice to have a 3D reference that you can just flip around in your hands.  I also looked at a few pics of the studio models, but I wasn't all that concerned with being strictly accurate.  I usually look at the reference to get the general idea, then just build whatever.  Some of the proportions are definitely dictated by other considerations, as well.  For example, the hangar bay is enlarged cause the TIES gotta fit through there.  The overall shape of the body of the ship also has a little more depth, which helps accommodate the interior and also helps things fit together without visible seams.

Regarding the part count, yeah, it's tough to estimate.  As Legolijntje can tell you, my original estimate was 8k when I asked him to do the instructions.  But the computer don't lie, so I was way off apparently.  A lot of the parts did go into the different frame and interior, I think, but tiles also add a lot, too.  Where the 10030 might have an exposed 6x12 or some other large plate, you can easily turn one piece into ten with tiles and greebling.

Maybe you should make the instructions a little cheaper. I'm already going to have to rob- I mean buy every light blueish gray piece from a LEGO store.

Just a tip no offense.

If you can afford $1500 worth of bricks what difference is $25 for the instructions? Goddamn kids these days

Just checked on bricklink.

It would cost 1050£ + shipping for all the orders + 25$ for the instructions.

Wow.

25$ is a small token to pay for the amount of work that has gone into the set and instructions.

I was looking at buying a second hand 10030 but when I can buy and build something of a similar size with much more detail and 5 x the number of pieces then this ship is actually a bargain. Also consider that the rumoured 7000 piece millennium falcon is supposed to have a price tag of £7-800

It will probably have to wait until next year but this is a definite build for me.

What is your next project going to be Rasko?

I dunno, I just moved to a nicer apartment, so I'm kind of settling in at the moment--gotta figure out how my living room should look, where to put all the LEGO stuff, etc.  After that, to the disappointment of Star Wars fans I'm sure, I have some very preliminary ideas for building a steampunk airship or a particular courthouse in upstate NY.  I have put some thought into a playable Mon Cal, too, but that'd be a really big project--don't want to get into something like that just yet.  I may squeeze in some derivative projects (a la the Plus Size AT-AT) or set mods, too, but no current plans.

Glad you think so :)  And similarly, if 10030 had been cheaper on the secondary market, I probably would have bought that rather than starting my own Star Destroyers.

If you go with new parts, $1,500 is about the best you can hope for.  If you have 10188 10030, and 75055 and are willing to cannibalize them, you save a fortune.  But you can't have a fleet with one ship, so I wasn't ;)

I hope a Plus Size First Order Heavy Assault walker is going to be on your "side projects". From the leaked pictures the thing looks awesome in the movie and the set doesn't give it justice. I am sure that a Plus Size version of it would look great, especially next to my Imperial Plus Size AT ATand I wouldn't mind paying for the instructions for it.

this is amazing! I wouldn't mind a video of how it opens up. It almost looks in the pictures like the same size as the Tyrant!

Had to buy a new table, huh?

Hey you should make a ucs super star destroyer! With instructions!

As much as I want to see it happen... You are going to need to buy a warehouse to build and display it.

This project is really growing on me, especially since Rebrickable told me that I already own 47% of the parts!
Currently I am building the Apollo Rocket from LEGO Ideas and I noticed that 'inside' the model a lot of bright colored parts (yellow, green, blue, red) are used.
Of course they become invisible once the model is finished.
The Aggressor on the other side is all grayish, inside out.

@legolijntjeWould it be possible to change in the BI the color of all 'hidden' parts to red meaning 'choose-whatever-color-you-have-laying-around'?
I wonder how many parts that would affect. The model will become reachable for a lot more people (like me) if a few thousand parts can be used in every color you like!
Also I think the BI will become less error prone when using multiple colors. May be that is the main reason LEGO does this as well?

I understand that this means a lot of (extra) work for you. If I can be of any help, please let me know!

I haven't looked at the model, will do that later, but I don't think there's that much that can be colored honestly. Since the model has an interior and is rather 'thin' (single-stud wide walls, panels that are a few plates thick etc.) pretty much everything is visible. At least, I think so when trying to imagine the model from the top of my head, I might be wrong

I'll be interested to see how many parts from the new FO Star Destroyer could be used. Bound to drop to 40-50% off at some point.
