I think 2016 will be hard to top with the Porsche, Claas and Bucket Wheel. Even the little Volvo was decent.

This year the two flagships are interesting but the lower models are unremarkable. Also, everything is much more expensive.

I'd say this year may be on a slightly higher grade than 2016.

in 2016 we have Volvo Excavator, Volvo Loader, Claas, BWE, and Porsche.

This year we have Mack Anthem, Mack LR, Volvo Loader, Volvo Dump Truck, RTCrane, and Chiron.

In my view:

RTC > BWE

2018 Volvo's > 2016 Volvo's

Mack Anthem + Mack LR > Xerion

Not to mention in 2018 there are more rare types of models. In 2018 we have Tractor Truck + Trailer (never seen for A model), Garbage Truck, Fork Lift, Forest Harvester. For 2016, the only rare things are BWE and 3 modes of steering. Tractors aren't very rare in Lego Technic IMO.

It´s certainly an interesting debate but the Volvo 42030 was a 2014 model carried over. If we look at it that way, then in 2016 we also had the Arocs on the market!

BWE had also never been done before.

I guess we agree 40th anniversary was actually a low point sandwiched between two superior years?

I didnt say anything about 42030. I was talking about 42081 which is also a Volvo loader and its B model which is also a dump truck.

I thought the small 1H sets in 2017 were the highlight of the year.

2016 and 2018 are very similar. Hmmmmm

Volvo pneumatic excavator Vs pneumatic forest harvester, ide say 2018 set wins due to it new parts.

Claas Vs 2018 Volvo Ninjago loader, 2016 wins easily.

BWE Vs RTC, 2016 wins for its at the time new parts (the large ring gears, I see no new for 2018 parts yet in RTC) and new subject matter, meaning it's not yet another crane.

Porsche Vs Chiron. 2018 wins so far as I can see. The Chiron with its new parts approaches the hype the Porsche generated better than the Porsche did.

I guess overall it's a draw which is a great achievement as 2016 was so good, but in 2016 the mighty Arocs was still on the shelf.

Then add a forklift to the scale to tip it over to 2018

I bought 2x 42053, 2x 42054. This year I might buy 1x 42082. In other words, 2016 is the winner in my book. I'm also more interested in buying the Porsche than the Chiron because I feel like I would have more use of the orange pieces and the black rims.

I am not a fan of the new break disk part of the Chiron and I can't see where I would use the dual blue coloured parts. Especially since you only get two fender panels in each colour. I also don't understand why so many people favor printed parts. The printed fender panels on the Porsche would have been way more useful without the printing. Now they feel like if you would have put fake vents on the real car. That, I would very much rather live without.

I think the only thing that 2018 'wins' over 2016 is the new pieces. 2016 had some great new pieces (e.g. the 2 axle 180 with pinhole, 3L axle with stop, 11L axle, and smooth 3L connector), but I think the ones in 2018 are even more useful for genuinely new possibilities with LEGO (new valve, new gear parts).

The models from 2016 were better IMO than 2018. Sure, the Mac Anthem is great (and the garbage truck has to be the best B-model, maybe ever?) but I don't think 42082 breaks new ground like 42055 did, and while 42083 clearly improves on 42056, it's not really a step change (i.e. the functions pretty much the same, what has improved is the gearbox due to new parts, and a better panelling job). I don't think 42080 compares to 42053 (another excellent B-model) and 42081 has nothing on 42054.

So yeah, if I had to choose, I'd take the 2016 sets over the 2018, as long as I can bricklink the new parts from 2018 too :)

It does come with 6 and most moc's will need 4, so you should not have to use them. Lego only seem to print on a curved surface or a very small surfaces where stickers are difficult to apply.

I believe that it would be impossible to produce sticker for the fenders because their curvature is not "flat" and couldn't be "unrolled" into flat surface (like in regular panels), so you're right here.

True, but I still can't build the Porsche without fake vents in the fenders. I wish LEGO had built a Porsche 911R or a 911 Turbo S instead. :)

The both of you are probably right about stickers and curved surfaces. I didn't think about that.

If I understand you correctly in term "the 2 axle 180 with pinhole"- this part was introduced 2017, but IMHO best new part in 2016 was tractor tire  and hope to get a bit smaller (tractor) tire next year

Interesting thing, in some catalogs the Chiron is marked August and in some June.

Untill the 1st of August the Chiron will only be available at the official Lego Shops. After that the Chiron will also be sold at Lego resellers.
