Hello,

I have a problem with the crane from my 8258 crane truck. The 3rd section of the crane won't open and close. I've modified it with the instructions from the modification pack published by DesignerHan. It should make the playability of the model better, but it doesn't work properly. Tried out replacing the LA' lubricating, but nothing works.

Does anyone have experience with this modification pack?? Or how to solve the problem, maybe another modification??

So, in the project I just posted earlier today (Technic 40th Anniversary post) I revived one of my favorite MOCs.  When looking at the battery packs, not only did I replace the batteries, but I noticed that one of the packs, a battery had begun corroding.  Even after replacing the batteries, the pack did not supply much power.  I had to throw out the pack.  I am sure you checked for power in the pack..... but make sure there is no corrosion.  I don't know how that happened, my set has been stored indoors.  So..... to piggy-back off the OP's question..... anyone know how else batteries can corrode (other than moisture/weather)?

@nerdsforprez With, age, just like everything else... As the batteries get older and are not used, the caustic materials in them will gradually begin to leach out of them, causing the corrosion, which ruins the electronics.

@Dafgek81 At some point I built the crane alone just to get the experience, but as far as I remember, it worked fine for me. I would double-check the gearing...

:hmpf_bad:   age wins again.

We're all nerds here

And of course, sorry for the offtopic!

As everything in this World is impermanent, so are the batteries and almost everything in last 20 years has quality problems and things are getting worse and worse (that is why I'll stop dissasembling my models). You are no nerd, you are trying to put some "color" in this "shades of gray" situation...

It's not the bb, nor the batteries. The second cranesection moves okay. Batteries are new, the bb had no batteries in it before I tried it again. Set was new when I bought it. The white clutch gear slips because of strain, XL motor runs powerful.

I only have a close to standard 8258, but can you do some more troubleshooting to locate the problem:

- Disconnect the LA from that section and move the section by hand. Is there a lot of friction or is the movement blocked by something?

- Does the LA function while disconnected from the crane?

- You could remove the LA completely and check if it works by manually rotating the input with an axle.

- Did something change since the last time jou had it functioning? For example some modifications to the structure or the mechanics. Maybe the truck fell down once. All this could mean something in the drivetrain is stuck or displaced.

Good luck.

A very noob question - and sorry for it: have You tried to run in both directions? Maybe it wants only to close the section, which of course lead to clutch gear slipping, as there is no movement left.

If not this the case, try to replace the clutch gear with normal gear to see, if the clutch releases too early = too little friction left in it = defect.

Are all the pivot points easy and free to move if You deattach the drivetrain?

Is the drivetrain closed - no axle slipped out, etc. ?
