Hi there,

Recently I've seen amazing lego build on: Lego Ideas. Unfortunately it did not come through. So I decided to build one myself.

Using Icemann pictures as references and studying sideshowtoy.com collectibles I've come up with somewhat different build than original Icemann's.

Went through dozens of ideas how to create round probe body and head and trying to decorate it as close as possible to movie and star wars wiki designs.

Drone stats:

Brick count: ~950

Brick count stand: ~70

Dimensions (WxDxH): 12cm x 12cm x 10cm / 5" x 5" x 4" + arms stretch about 12cm (5") [excluding antennas]

All arms can move independently - each arm joint has it's own lego-joint and whole arm is mounted on towball joint type, also head can rotate freely. Thx for all replays and for pointing out one major flaw in probe design - to small head (thx Meatcan!).

Here are some new renders of the new version: https://imgur.com/a/80VR1

I'm posting LDD file for a probe with detailed PDF manual.

Hi! Beautiful MOC! Love the details! If you are in to or up for criticism, the head is to small in my opinion, if not disregard what I just said.

Is the model to scale with the UCS R2-D2 and BB-8?

Nice work !

I would be interested in looking at your LDD WIP file (you show 2 pics in your gallery). Would you accept to share it ?

If yes, PM me. :)

Hi, you might be right about head being a little bit to small, I'll try to rework it. It will take some some time to complete, but I think it's worth it :) As for scale, it's (with some kind of stand) about 30cm high, but considering original probe was about 1.6m high - I'd say no, it's not BB-8 or R2D2 scale, at least not UCS ones.

That's some amazing work! Congrats mate!! :)

Before proceeding with this MOC I would like to check the parts/availability/total cost in Bricklink.

When I'm trying to upload the .lxf I get the following error:

"

The following errors were found in the file:

  • Part not found in catalog. item No:18624"

Does anyone know how to overcome this?

Thx :)

As for problematic parts:

Lego Slope, Curved 2 x 1 Inverted

24201 -  Slope, Curved 2 x 1 Inverted

Lego Tile, Round 1 x 1 Quarter

25269 - Tile, Round 1 x 1 Quarter

Lego Tile, Round 2 x 2 with Open Stud

18674 - Tile, Round 2 x 2 with Open Stud

Lego Plate, Modified 1 x 4 Offset

18624 is equal to 4590 - Plate, Modified 1 x 4 Offset

Hope this helps

Thanks mcgrah. :)

Although the .lxf can't be upload at all to Bricklink when encounters an error.

I got it up to Bricklink via a roundabout way

I uploaded it to Rebrickable, and then export it out as a Brickstock (*.bsx) file before loading it up on Bricklink.

Cheers!

You can open it in LDD editor and remove those files, then add to Bricklink wanted list manually :)

Other option is to load it to stud.io and replace 18624 with 4590 and export to Bricklink from the program.

Or third option - take Azrielsc road :)

Just an idea:

  1. Remove 18674
  2. Add in 18651 (black) or 43093 (black) with the cross pin facing downwards
  3. Add 3941 (black) with the studs facing upwards
  4. Add 87552 (trans-clear) or 3941 (trans-clear) for the stand

Take with a pinch of salt please, I have not built this! Haha! :classic:

@mcgrah or anyone else out there, have you find a way to have this beauty stand?

You can build any stand for it based on fact that axle can go almost through it.

There is a hole at the bottom with round plate (15535), that was designed for a stand - I did makeshift one using clear 3941 (as Azrielsc suggested) and axle but wasn't sturdy enough.

I would be happy to see any photos of it on a stand. Haven't decided if I built it yet, but this creation needs support. :)
