badgerboy Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 The Sphyrna. My entry for the Rebrick Freighter Wars competition. Piloted by Sif Cahone, 'The Sphyrna' (pron. Suh-fir-nah) Is a Corellian YT1350KL light freighter. Like most of the ships in the YT series, The Sphyrna is prone to being slightly temperamental. Sif is a reluctant smuggler, but with galactic taxation on imports and exports the way they are it's hard to make an honest cred, so she's always on the lookout for low-risk goods to transport. Her co-pilot is 404 (an android) who broke his own programming, Sif found him cheating on the sluggy tables (a gambling game similar to Backgammon). The gunner is known only as Redeye, who Sif rescued from a life of slavery on the planet Cyclopsia Beta. The final member of the crew is the ship's engineer, Ryk Lugfan, who has just helped Sif take receipt of a cargo of highly desirable and much sought after building toys, and being a fan himself, he just had to build one! NB. Syphyrna is the Latin name for Hammerhead sharks Hope you like my entry, but with so many strong entries out there already, I'd be very surprised if I found myself as one of the lucky few. Any comments are gratefully received. Quote
Kodan Black Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I like the shape! Unique and yet recognizable. I like that you picked Sand Green as it isn't too bright, but I wonder if maybe making there a bit more where you did use it might make it stand out a touch more without being overwhelming. Like instead of a 1x4 to use 2 and have it be 2x4. I like the cool shaping on the radar dish! And it looks like you gave it a full interior too, always a nice touch. The treads behind the cockpit are also a nice look. Is anyone worried about the lack of depth perception on their gunner though? Quote
makoy Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Great design. I nearly used the same colour scheme for my freighter but I ended up using olive green instead of sand green. I like what you did with the escape pods. Cheers! Quote

Thanks, yeah I wanted to use more, thought it needed it too, but that was all the sand green I had to hand, well I didn't have any, so that's all the sand green tiles that my kids had in their lego! I'm glad you noticed that the gunner has depth perception issues , it was one of the little jokes I aimed for. 1 hour ago, makoy said: Great design. Thanks, the choices for accent colour seemed really restricted to me, if you wanted to have a similar feel to the dark red the Falcon uses. I wasn't sure the escape pods/docking rings worked, but I liked the extra texture they brought to that section of the ship. Quote
DrMuttonchops Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Great ship, man! I love the little "toy sized" YT1300 in the crew area. and the interior engine area is superb, I love the use of the engines from the old Zam speeder chase set! The overall shape is awesome, very original, and I like (what looks like to me) the tank treads around the cockpit hallway. Color scheme and greebling are stellar, and the crew is very cool! The brick-built droid is rad as well, plus your sensor dish is great. Any other interior shots? I'm a sucker for them. Best of luck to you! :) Quote
Digger of Bricks Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 I initially wasn't aware of this Rebrick contest until I started seeing many of these original design Corellian freighter creations pop up around Flickr. Though I'm not much of a Star Wars guy, I'm really liking many of the entries for this contest I've seen so far, and this one certainly is no exception! For me, the Sand Green accenting and that "Nexogon" radar dish are the two best parts of this creation, and your usage of those turntable bases for the rear cooling fans is really cool also! Quote

I do have a few other interior shots, but I ran out of time to edit them! I'll try to add more pics in the next couple of days :-) 13 hours ago, Digger of Bricks said: I initially wasn't aware of this Rebrick contest until I started seeing many of these original design Corellian freighter creations pop up around Flickr. Thanks for the kind words. I was pleased with the radar dish but having used Nexogons fairly extensively on a few previous occasions I was tentative about using one again, it just came together really well though, so I had to use it! badgerboy Posted October 24, 2017 Author Posted October 24, 2017 Thought I'd just share a few more shots as I managed to find some time to edit them. Top and bottom, this picture might be a bit dark, I forgot to adjust the levels. All the panels open. Ryk's Lego room! For the freight being carried by the Sphyrna, I thought it would be fun to use the new Falcon we are all trying to win. To make a sticker for the 2x2 tile, I had to simplify the box art somewhat, oh and 'remove' the logos! Although this looks a bit rough and very basic, anything more complicated or accurate looked awful when printed out at size! Finally, here's the very rough design sketch I did before I started building as a guide for where I was aiming to get to. The basic frame structure owes a little bit to the 4504 but I deviated from it quite a bit in the end, especially where my mandibles connected. At the scale there aren't too many options open. I just hope that won't count against me. Quote
badgerboy Posted October 30, 2017 Author Posted October 30, 2017 (edited) I didn't know where best to post this piece of news, but the result of the freighter wars contest has been put back until Nov 24th... didn't seem significant enough for it's own thread. (quoted below from the comments page). "REBRICKADMIN Hi everyone! Unfortunately we've had to postpone announcing the winners because there were so many awesome entries for the judges and Lucasfilm to look though. This extra time will allow them to carefully review all the amazing entries that were submitted. We are sorry for the delay but appreciate your patience!" Oh, and thanks @roadstermatt! Kristof Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 Whenever a nice looking model has a meaninfgful interior that is fully integrated, it automatically deems my respect and admiration. While I am not the biggest fan of the shape you ended up with (origonal but somewhat awkward looking - I would have preferred if you stayed closer to your sketch, which, by the way, is very nice!), I really like the model on the whole. And I love the fact that you built a fully developed and functional model instead of just a shell that nobody even knows whether it holds together (pretty much what I did with my entry... shame :D). Safe to say that this is better than all the MF playsets and easily beats the vast majority of the other contest entries. Well done! Quote
