@Didumos69 Thanks! I will make a video when the parts arrive and I add them to the gearbox!

UPDATE: The parts order has been shipped, it should be here by Saturday! (Cinco de Mayo, Revenge of the Fifth, 05/05/2018!)

UPDATE: The parts order was wrong!

My order got messed up, I returned it, Lego will be sending me the proper, verified, parts soon. I'll have to wait another week now. Sorry to disappoint.

HOWEVER...

Kudos to @rm8 for his work with RC4WD, I'll be picking up a set of these bad boys for this model! Perfectly in scale, way better than Lego tires... Instant buy!

I think with this tires your model will be better, despite they are not LEGO. sometimes I also think about 3rd party tires...good luck

UPDATE: Parts arrived!

Half my order arrived. The WRONG HALF!!! I received (1) AAA battery box and (2) extension wires. NOT the parts needed for the Ariel Nomad. I still don't know when they are supposed to arrive. I'm hoping they will be here by Friday, but there is no telling, since it has been almost 3 weeks now. Sorry guys...

Where the heck do you buy parts?

Posted

@Leonardo da Bricki Shopping at LEGO.com is always like this. If You order PF parts and bricks mixed, than they will be shipped separately, as PF parts are coming quite fast from different location (at least for me). Picking the bricks from warehouse is more time consuming, so 3-4 weeks is normal. So no worries.

One question: do You make design in LDD or similar, or only real build? How do You decide which parts do You need (mismatching colored parts for test build - then order the right colored ones)?

Posted

@Didumos69 Ironically enough, direct from Lego!

@agrof I don't use LDD to design the model. I only build in real bricks. Afterwards, I might make an LDD to share so others can build it themselves.

I decide what parts I need based on what parts I'm already using. And I only buy parts if I don't have enough of one, or don't have any. Therefore, I bought some connectors and black half-liftarms I know I will need, and a couple other parts that will probably be used in this build, but if not, they are parts I don't already own, so they will be used elsewhere.

ALL THE PARTS ARE FINALLY HERE!!!!!

UPDATE TIME: The parts have all arrived (except for one 1x1 beam in black, someone at Lego cannot count to save their life...).

1. I will be interchanging all the parts over the next few days and the weekend, and I can definitely make more progress from here on out!

2. I will be finishing the chassis, then starting the roll-cage. And yes, it will be functional! I could have used one of those yesterday... Crashed on my rollerblades pretty hard... :laugh:

plus I weighed many parts and I also do order from lego.com and guess what???  every order i have gotten from lego.com . the weight of all the elements are spot on perfect ...  when i get parts from other sources . the elements would fall into an average weight instead of dead on!!

Quick UPDATE: Most of the color vomit  parts have been replaced!!

1. 75% of the parts I ordered were ones I didn't have in black, i.e. the rear suspension arms are now in black, along with the 5x7 frame in the rear.

2. I will post photos tomorrow, I really shouldn't be up this late already... But Lego. You know how it is.

3. @sirslayer That makes some sense... Thanks for the cool information!

UPDATE: Gearbox Revision!

1. I am attempting to streamline the support structure/chassis elements of the gearbox. It was something I was already unhappy with, particularly with wanting to add a partial interior, (with the Classic BLUE SEATS!) so as I was exchanging parts, I decided to make a couple changes... Photos below, sorry for the poor quality...

Thought you guys might want to see what all I ordered from Lego. And I forgot to post that photo a couple days ago.

As you can see, the entire gearbox is 5 studs wide, except for the shifting elements. Quite happy with that!

Rear view. Ever important. The shocks will be reinforced, among other things, I'm not sure what all I want to include in the rear...

Sorry for the long lack of updates, but it should be (more) regular from here on out! I'm trying to finish this MOC before school starts!

Please drop a comment for advice, critiques, or anything else!

Gearbox looks indeed quite compact, but where's the shifter. Would like to see it work now that you have the smooth 3L connectors.

@Aventador2004 As I previously stated above, I will be reinforcing the shocks.

@Didumos69 It is in the shop. I am working as I type this to make the chassis structure around it as compact and strong as possible, but still allowing the mechanism to work. I will try to post a video of the whole gearbox for everyone this weekend!

UPDATE: Prototype Chassis!!!

1. This is most definitely a prototype, I am still figuring out how I want everything to connect together. And where the seats and limited bodywork and the rollcage are gonna be attached.

2. The gearbox has been updated. It now about 20% more compact, and also more reliable when shifting, though not 100% yet. I don't yet know how to fix that, but if anyone has any ideas, feel free to share them! You will get full credit!

3. @Didumos69 As requested, here is the video! My first ever on YouTube! Click subscribe!

Thanks for the video! Your shifter does not seem to align to 90 degree angles very well. I can't really see what is going on though. What I can see, is that the whole bracing relies on connectors rather than beams. It looks nice, but it makes your structure quite weak. It is friction locked and not form locked. I would make sure you have at least a few lengthwise, transversal and vertical beams or frames running through the system to lock things properly.

Looks good so far!

Why did you use the red connector piece instead of the white for the switch ring? I thought the white helps with it's spring effect for proper clutching.

The shifter is not strong enough to make the driving rings pas the ridges of the white connector. It’s the limiter that should complete the shifts' but I think the li item is too tight. Sorry for answering @Leonardo da Bricki.

@Didumos69 No problem. I might be able to implement another style of shifter later tonight. I know what the issue is now, it is that the System parts I am using are not 100% centrally aligned on the axle. And the result is incomplete shifts. It's a good idea of mine, but it has rather serious flaws...

Concerning your other point about strength... The current chassis will eventually have beams helping connect everything, once I add the seats, body and rollcage. It is very minimal structure right now to allow for what's going to be added to it.

@agrof What he said. And thanks!

I gave it another try with another mechanism I thought of... It's worse than before. Rubber connectors = no good for anything!!

Knob wheels are useful, but I did experiment with them, but had no luck making a mechanism that allows them to rotate forwards and back while locking in place every 90degrees.

My apologies for the crappy quality photos, my good camera has no juice, it needs to charge...

@Paul Boratko & @Didumos69 Do you guys have any advice for me? I cannot think of anything else to try.
