KDog Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 (edited) I also do what you do, Batbrick, and put myself in the mindset of characters very different from myself (like Valkyrie, for example). But it's inevitable for me that some of the characters will derive from aspects of myself. As for keeping track of the characters, that's probably why I stopped introducing so many and have been focusing on developing the ones I have. Brad, that museum sounds awesome, although I'm sad that you had never seen a Classic Space set in person beforehand. I definitely suggest tracking down a few sets on Bricklink or eBay. While the sets are simpler than today's due to a smaller selection of parts, there's a certain joy in their quaintness. A lot of imagination went into designing them, too. You know, sometimes I'm reminded that I started this comic to breathe life into 30-year old Lego sets that never really had a backstory and, I felt, deserved the spotlight. The comic has become more than that, I feel, as I've developed a story and characters that are my own and have become the focus. But I'm glad if the comic still achieves its initial purpose, helping people to appreciate some great old toys. However, the nature of the comic is a constant conflict for me. I would like to do more with the characters and the story, as those are my own creations. But they're tied to something that's not mine, the Lego sets and designs, so it hampers what I can do. Yet, people may never have read it if not for the fact that it was built with Lego. And the Lego plays into the mood of the whole thing, and helps me create the story I want because I can take photos of it instead of draw, which takes me a lot longer and produces a lot less. I really wish I could somehow make the comic more official, but haven't found a way yet. I have been writing prose fiction using my characters and stories, divorced from anything Lego-releated, and might try and do something separate with that, but the comic is still the main project. I kinda painted myself into a corner. Edited December 7, 2009 by KDog Quote

KDog Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 What the......? Coldwell's adventures with the octopus have been chronicled before, although it's been awhile. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Yea!!! I almost forgot about his darkness! I hope we can see more of him , and the dragons 2 Quote
Sonic Screwdriver Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Coldwell's adventures with the octopus have been chronicled before, although it's been awhile. Hahaha... Coldwell seems to like being bossed around as much as Massoch likes being beaten by Blacktron or anyone else who will throw a punch Quote
PerryDaPirate Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Just have to say, I have been reading this from the start, and love it with a passion. The octopuses appearance was so random it made me laugh my lungs out! Quote
Ben Kenobi Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Coldwell's adventures with the octopus have been chronicled before, although it's been awhile. Wondering when we'd see the octopus again. Yep, he's been mentioned before. Once in a comic where Schwartz, Galanos, Amarillo and Coldwell got to gether over some beer and hot wings, and another in his Advent Calendar appearance from last year. Anyways, nice to see those two again. And speaking of Massoch, any time we'll see him again? And finally, as I said earlier, any chance of the Tenth Doctor cropping up, especially with his impending regeneration? Ben Kenobi Quote
KDog Posted December 8, 2009 Author Posted December 8, 2009 I don't wanna overuse the Doctor and I want to stay consistent, so I was planning to stick with his 8th incarnation. But I think I could make a good 10th Doc minifig with the parts I have, so maybe I can find a way to sneak him in. Quote
Batbrick Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I also do what you do, Batbrick, and put myself in the mindset of characters very different from myself (like Valkyrie, for example). But it's inevitable for me that some of the characters will derive from aspects of myself. As for keeping track of the characters, that's probably why I stopped introducing so many and have been focusing on developing the ones I have. That's a very good approach to have actually, a nice mix. I'm really enjoying the development of the characters actually, as I feel a boost in introducing them would've detracted a bit from the comic. It also adds a more serious side to the comedy by revealing the characters to be real, rounded people in their setting, rather than simply gags to be made. Hmmm, it certainly is a dilemma you have there. However, I would disagree with the statement that you can't make it "official". you may not be able to make it so in the way of being able to sell collections etcetera, but new media is a rapidly growing, dominant and powerful place of fiction and in no major way hampered by mere constraints over what properties are presented to make the story, many famous webcomics that have achieved great success are very similar (one even used pieces from boardgames such as Cluedo as characters). I can understand the problem, but don't think it is quite as large as you may think, though making your own website dedicated to it, along with your prose and other creations would be very neat and certainly garner attention, as well as possibly raising you up a few bumps on the "official" status. Alternatively bios and additional tidbits, as well as "behind-the-scenes" or insight into your writing process could prove to be very interesting and divorced mostly from the Lego medium. Anyway, laughed very much at this comic. Lt. Coldwell is one of my favourite minor characters and I feel he works very well in small doses. The return of my - er, his Dark Lord Xenu was hilarious, I wouldn't worry about being offensive as it all seems very tongue-in-cheek. Of course his highne - I mean that silly Xenu engaging in the trivial instructions of washing the ship was also a hoot. Batbrick Away! Quote

Batbrick Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Hu - buh - wha!? This certainly had me laughing, especially at the end, though a crossdressing bear is something for which I'll need the brain bleach to remove! But yeah, try not to do drugs in the future Batbrick Away! Quote
Sisco Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Quite a case of stud-face... Love your comic, Kdog!!! Keep 'em coming Quote
Ben Kenobi Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 The last comic was... Interesting, to say the least. But it was nice to see something different. Any chance you may, I don't know, return to Date Night next? Ben Kenobi Quote
KDog Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 The current schedule I have in mind calls for two one-shot comics this week (with one going up tonight), followed by a short storyline (about 3 comics or so) that actually (By God!) resolves one of the comic's many ongoing mysteries/storylines. And then Date Night. Quote

KDog Posted December 16, 2009 Author Posted December 16, 2009 Scouse sometimes wears sunglasses, like in that G.I. Joe storyline where he pretended he was a producer of the new film. Quote
Batbrick Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 Yay, good job patching up a plothole there KDog, and in a convincing way too, none of that "retcon" stuff that is so obvious. I enjoyed Magnetica's argument here and laughed at her blanking him. I have no idea what those toys were though, but I laughed at the "little pink one" euphemism. Batbrick Away! Quote
