Batbrick Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Read it backwards. HOLY HELL! Very sneaky, I can't believe I didn't even notice that. Major props for the creepy factor there. As for the cockpit, it's really intended to be closed, but I open it so you can see the pilot. I probably should have just used all open or all closed. I like "open" for the close up shots, and "closed" for further away. Close up shots I think people would want to see the pilot... further away shots that include multiple ships, I think "closed" is more realistic. Ah, I see, but I agree with Sonic Screwdriver (which is also a very cool username by the by), I think for the closeup shots it should be open and for wider shots closed. Batbrick Away! Quote

Sonic Screwdriver Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Now Roboforce, too? I just wonder what kind of faces are under those helmets... especially since Dash has stolen at least 1 corpse from Europa, and probably has the body of the fatally injured Space Police officer from the future. Fight or Flee. I can't believe that President Weiss didn't have the Space Police notified to at least keep a look out for un-dead Dash and missing bodies. This seems completely inept... no wonder Schwartz gets elected, free pizza or not. Quote
Artanis I Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I found this comic a week ago. I read it all in 2 days, apart from the last 2. I thoroughly enjoyed lots of it, but some dragged on & on. I prefer when it's set in space, and made of Lego (hence the name of the comic) and not just photos of your toybox contents or other sets you've bought or built, somehow wormed into the story. I'm not really into the dacta "let's break down the 4th wall again" segments either. That said, it's your comic, so you do what you want. I think most of it is really good. I like the way you've come up with so many characters and threads, and used different minifigs for most of them (helps with the identification). Your backdrop idea is awesome, I think it really sets the scene and looks great. Valkyrie is HOT. Quote
KDog Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 (edited) I can't believe that President Weiss didn't have the Space Police notified to at least keep a look out for un-dead Dash and missing bodies. This seems completely inept... no wonder Schwartz gets elected, free pizza or not. A running theme in my comic is the ineptness of authority. But aside from that, I imagine that if, say, the U.S. government had some evidence that an undead pilot was flying around and stealing dead bodies, I doubt they'd inform every police department and air traffic control center to watch out for them because it's a sensitive, controversial topic. (although, granted, there might be an alert regarding the plane) More likely, I think the FBI or other government agencies would be informed on a need-to-know basis. In any case, the secrecy will be addressed. Granted, I think I sometimes make the mistake of having characters act too stupidly, even when it wasn't intended (sometimes it is). As a writer, that bothers me, so I at least try to make up for it later sometimes by trying to explain motivations. For example, I think you'll see in the next comic that Romero was scared crapless by Dash, and that's why he ran. Edited June 9, 2010 by KDog Quote

I especially appreciate your encouragement to create the comic I want to, even if not all of it is to your tastes. I am trying to keep stories a little shorter, and don't plan on featuring other toys much again. Others have commented on these being weak points, and I'm thankful for that, since I don't always realize this myself. While I willcontinue to use other sets (like Schwartz's house and the Hamburger Hatch), I think things are going to be a little more regularly space-based going forward, mainly because I'm trying to move the story forward a bit faster. As for the DACTA stuff, well, some of it is breaks the 4th Wall and some of it is them talking to viewers in-continuity. The 4th Wall breaking stuff is an option I like sometimes because it allows for meta-humor and is a way to speak directly to the readers. Overusing could be a problem, I imagine. And yeah, Valkyrie turned out to be kind of a babe, huh? :-) I read through all this yesterday and forgot to comment, but may I just say this comic is EPIC!Its fantastic and I loved every bit! Sonic Screwdriver Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I'm a bit confused. Shouldn't detonating an explosive blow the whole front of the ship to garbage, and incinerate everyone in the process? And even if they got into the ship, the SP guy still has his gun. He could blow Dash's skull off, even if the Robo-Force guys get him in the end. Quote

The mine is a "compressed" explosive, able to focus its force at one point, in this case strong enough to crack open the otherwise exteremely strong windshield. As for what happens next... you'll see. Quote
Sonic Screwdriver Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 (edited) Can't wait to see what happens! I'm compiling a list of Dash's "victims". (1) Unidentified body #1 (from empty grave on Europa, Space Skulls gravestone) (2) Unidentified body #2 (from empty grave on Europa, cross gravestone) (3) Captain Hancock (exhumed from Europa) (4) Lieutenant Parker (unconfirmed, was "chased" by Dash in a dream as he was dying) (5) Unidentified Space Police III officer (unconfirmed, from the future via the "Galanos Vortex") (6) Robo Force member #1 (allegedly killed in "accident" on comet) (7) Robo Force member #2 (allegedly killed in "accident" on comet) Perhaps Officer Romero will be victim #8... As a writer, that bothers me, so I at least try to make up for it later sometimes by trying to explain motivations. For example, I think you'll see in the next comic that Romero was scared crapless by Dash, and that's why he ran. It is a huge problem in writing anything, I think. Just look at Scrubs, The Simpsons, Futurama, Cheers etc. Its a common criticism that characters unintentionally become increasingly stupid or exaggerate to the point where they are almost parodies of what they were, also called Flanderisation. The fact that you are aware of characters sometimes being too stupid, and even make steps to fix it when they do, shows a great awareness. Of course I still have it as a criticism, but all things considered you're doing a good job keeping your characters consistent for the most part. While I willcontinue to use other sets (like Schwartz's house and the Hamburger Hatch), I think things are going to be a little more regularly space-based going forward, mainly because I'm trying to move the story forward a bit faster. I personally love the 4th wall stuff myself, mainly because it is well done 4th wall and is used wisely to establish plotpoints nad get readers up-to-speed. That said I'd like to see them a bit more sparingly myself as I like to think of them as an occasional comic treat. Glad that you're trying to speed things up a bit too, that is probably my main criticism of the comic, you're good at giving the readers what they want, without giving the readers what they want (in terms of both ending up sucking, as well as trying to please everyone that is, and still making the comic as you want it, which is great). And yeah, Valkyrie turned out to be kind of a babe, huh? :-) I think we can all agree to this, even if it is awkward to admit it Fantastic new comics KDog, the window issue is entirely resolved now, and some very freaky panels here too, especially the neck turning which is something that's always freaked me out, and the view of Dash and his cronies outside the cockpit with the mine. Great stuff, and after reading your notes, a very well setup line with the Roboforce henchmen, I love a good arc -Thomas Quote

I don't mind the use of domestic/Earthly non-space sets. I like the variety of locations in the overall storyline -- it gives the sense that there is a lot more at stake for the characters than small deep space outposts and frozen wasteland planets. Quote

Sonic Screwdriver Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 This is a good story. It just might be on par with Date Night, In Search Of... The 918, and House Call as one of my favorites. I've probably read House Call at least 10 times! Quote

I agree, I'm really liking how this one is developing. Awesome to see the twins in the most recent comics KDog,I think its a nice character detail that Friendlich is generally friendly to everyone who he isn't obsessively chasing.
