Minifig Lecturer Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Hello. Just wondering if anyone can confirm whether the Airport Shuttle monorail track will work with the Space monorail tracks of the 1990s? They look exactly the same to me, colour and usually black supports. Am I missing something? 8- Quote
Shadows Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Just wondering if anyone can confirm whether the Airport Shuttle monorail track will work with the Space monorail tracks of the 1990s? I have no experience with either, sadly, but they do seem to share a lot of parts, including the rails. http://peeron.com/inv/parts/2671 http://peeron.com/inv/parts/2672 To be absolutely certain, compare set inventories. #6399 Airport Shuttle #6991 Monorail Transport Base Quote
Siegfried Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Yes, they are the same... The good thing is you don't even need to believe me. The proof is right here. *sweet* Quote
CP5670 Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I have the two space monorails and their tracks are the same, so the airport shuttle track (which came out between them) should be too. They all use different arrow tiles on the direction changer switches, but you can easily change those. It's a pity TLC didn't do more with the monorail system. I like the monorails better than trains in some ways, because the tracks can be laid out in all three dimensions. That opens up a lot of new building possibilities. (I know you can make vertical ramps with train tracks too, but they aren't designed for it and it takes up a lot of space) Quote

You're right, pity there are no new sets though I remember they were pretty expensive at the time. Quote

DJ Force Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 I had the two space monorails and a friggin big lot of spare tracks from several ebay deals I won. All in all it was about 60 feet of tracks, and once I built a setup with all those track pieces. I managed to cover almost every inch of my living room with tracks :D So yes, I Quote
Jipay Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Those were expensive sets. Still weren't the monorail molds broken ? Quote
snefroe Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Those were expensive sets. Still weren't the monorail molds broken ? yes i believe they were and i think the producer of the engine no longer exists.... but most of all, i think the monorail was highly expensive for the day... 7000 BEF or about 150-160 DM in the mid 80s :-X think that was most of all the problem. DJ Force Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Whhoooooooow, easy there, Sne! :-D My parents never were very rich, but they got me the Futuron Monorail for christmas. So I Quote

voltio Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I know that they were semi-affordable here in the USA, since my Unitron Monorail 6991 still has the $140 price sticker on the box. *wub* I'd buy 3 more if they were produced again and the msrp was below $240. Quote
CP5670 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 (edited) I know that the Unitron monorail was a hefty $170 in the US at its initial release (despite the somewhat low piece count). That price is in one of the large S@H catalogs from back then. One of my friends in fifth grade had it and the rest of us were all envious. The Futuron one I got from ebay still had a price tag on the box, which IIRC said $130, although I don't have the box with me and can't check until I visit my parents' place in a few weeks. Strangely, the Airport Shuttle is listed as $140 on Lugnet, even though it was considerably larger than either of the space ones. *wacko* Edited February 29, 2008 by CP5670 Quote
SuvieD Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Basic bricks are cheaper than the fancy ones they used in the space versions though. The track has always been expensive but the other parts in the space set are not cheap either. The airport was a much better value all around though, with nine figures and so many possibilities with numerous pieces. Quote
CP5670 Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 The Airport Shuttle has a lot of special pieces too, like the curved panels, trees, windows and so on, and a lot more minifigs as well. It's not all that different from the space ones in that respect. I think Lugnet may have just guessed on that price, as they even have a question mark there. :-P The Airport Shuttle's total track length is nearly twice as long as the other two, so its price was probably higher at least initially. I vaguely remember seeing one on the top shelf of TRU at one point, but I was like five years old then and didn't get any of the big sets until a few years later. Quote

Airport shuttle was 7000 BEF, so there was a price difference, but not that much. 700 BEF is about 18 euro. can't be that important really. Or maybe the shuttle's production run was shorter... who knows... Quote
DJ Force Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 besides, i own 25% of your collection now, i know how filthy rich your parents must have been when you were a little spoiled brat collection space :-D *skull* Only the Futuron Monorail was from my childhood. Since I was 16 I was working and earning money - and I guess I spent it pretty good on Legos :-D Quote
