SlyOwl Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Hey! Here's my current WIP, a very snotty Nassau port MOC. It isn't quite finished, but I need some suggestions for filling in blank patches, so I can order the parts I need from one BL store ;-) Front view: Apologies for the dark patches - I need to get another desk lamp for my photomography :-$ All oddities will be explained in the finished thing ;-) e.g. the baguette on the floor... The sharky bit: I need to get that black slope in blue, but I think the rest is done for this part... The left-hand building: Thatch technique! It was quite hard to cross the gaps between the plates as hands don't naturally fit there, but with some jamming and some balancing it worked out alright (I think! X-D ). Yes, the captain's face is a custom; Flex's face without the headset and cleanly shaven with metal polish :-P The manhole: Someone's dropeed his hat, but it's a good thing he's got his friends! Custom face again. ;-) The lower room of the left-hand building: I've done a standard bedroom upstairs, but I need an idea for the downstairs... Pub? Inn? Shop? Something else? The right hand building: The ground floor is done, but I'm wondering how far to extend the next one and whether to add in another on top of that to counter the steep roof's effect... *wacko* The kitchen: Distasters all around! But someone's got eyes for the cook... :-D ...That guy's arm needs adjusting |-/ The second floor: Yes, that is the beginnings of a toilet ;-) I need some more ideas up here, but preferably not for the window X-O And a cannon I made for it; I consulted Col. Whipstick and he said that it shouldn't really matter that the era was slightly wrong, but now I can't seem to find a place to put it 8-| So the problems I want solving are: -What shall I do with the downstairs room in the left hand building? -What can I put in the second floor on the right hand building? -Shall I add in a 3rd floor? Or something else, like a crane... -Any other problems you can see... *y* Therefore, all criticisms are welcome! *sweet* Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted February 21, 2008 Governor Posted February 21, 2008 Well first of all I'm going to say you are quite an extraordinary talented builder are your techniques for adding detail like straw around the pirate who bursting through the roof is incredible! Aside from that I'm far too tired to think straight so I'll have some sleep and see if I have any suggestions for problems when I return. Quote
Admiral Bejaune Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 It looks great so far, the only thing I would recommend not putting a toilet on the second floor of the large white and black building... that would not be very historically accurate....I recommend putting a tavern (pub) on the first floor.... good work... Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted February 22, 2008 Eurobricks Emperor Posted February 22, 2008 Hola, this is good work! I've seen finished MOCs that don't look half as good as your WIP. As Mr. Phes already said, you are a very talented builder. Quote
Opproperaar Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 And thou needs suggestions X-O ? That's absolutely wonderful, you are indeed a clever building and your techniques never cease to amaze me! *sweet* I really like your cannon's smooth barrel I'd install some kind of shop (perhaps a fish shop?) in the lower left-hand building, I feel the setting is just great for that. I'm not so sure though about the right hand building. While cleverly and superbly built, it looks, especially in combination with the floor and the left hand building, kinda dull. I suggest adding a bit more colour to liven things up. :-$ (making the floor brown, parhaps?) I'd also remove the toilet and turn it into a tavern/hotel where pirates, traders, soldiers and all kinds of other filth wander in and brawl. :-P If you want o add anything else, you might want to extend the docks for more room though I guess that goes without saying. :-D Those are just my suggestions/preferences though, X-D Quote
Shadows Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Looks great, as long as I don't pay attention to the hundred dismembered hands making up that thatched roof! :-X :-P As for the second floor, I'd turn it into a storehouse for barrels, crates, and chests, so your crane idea might be useful there. For the downstairs that needs filling, a pub is always a good choice, and a great place for potential accidents and disasters, mostly resulting in waking up in the morning, looking over and thinking, "WHO IS THAT?" ;-) Keep us updated, it's a very nice project so far! *y* Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 First of all, great work sly! *y* Out of the right hand building i'd definetly make an inn with upstairs bedroom. The left hand building i'd use as a warehouse, with a crane. A third floor could work well as a storage place for smaller stuff. The docks could be a bit bigger to fit in cannons and such, it also gives room to make mudolar additions to the dock with maybe even more buildings *sweet* Keep it up, i'm sure it will be awesome when finished ;-) Quote
SlyOwl Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began... :'-) Aside from that I'm far too tired to think straight so I'll have some sleep and see if I have any suggestions for problems when I return. And I thought you never slept - you always seem to be online *wacko* I would recommend not putting a toilet on the second floor... We shall see...I had some classic British toilet humour in mind, but it depends how the building turns out... ;-) Hola!...As Mr. Phes already said, you are a very talented builder. Gracias! Pero no he veo algun de tus maquetas asi no puedo contestar con el frase mismo... 8-| And thou needs suggestions X-O ? Oh, aye! I wanted a little input from you all before I finished it, so everyone would like X-D I'm not so sure though about the right hand building. While cleverly and superbly built, it looks, especially in combination with the floor and the left hand building, kinda dull. I suggest adding a bit more colour to liven things up. :-$ (making the floor brown, parhaps?) Well said sah! I've now swapped the floors over, as it were; the right hand building now has a stone floor (I don't have enough brown :'-( ) and the other is now a condensed soup kitchen. This means the left hand building is now done and I think the right hand one will become some type of wonder emporium, with all sorts of foreign objects for sale, like Islander masks and weird stuffed things... Any more ideas anyone? *sweet* I'd also remove the toilet and turn it into a tavern/hotel where pirates, traders, soldiers and all kinds of other filth wander in and brawl. :-P Brawl is good! :-D I'll think about it, but I've used all my angry faces up and the shop I'll be going to doesn't have any |-/ First of all, great work sly! *y* Since when has my name been Sly? :-/ Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Since when has my name been Sly? :-/ Isn't Owl you last name? 8-| Quote
Asuka Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Just beautiful. All these smart ideas and lovely work with plates.... all these fine details like the jellyfish in the kitchen.... brilliant! :'-) I never was a great friend of the abuse of MF hands, but this is really great. *y* -What shall I do with the downstairs room in the left hand building? A shop for prostheses, perhaps.... 8-| Quote
SlyOwl Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 (edited) I've continued with my swapping of the floors and now have begun the furnishing. It seems to be some sort of wonder emporium, displaying curiosities from around the world, such as tikis and stuffed witch doctors... :-D Suggestions wanted for this! What else shall I add? Isn't Owl you last name? 8-| Cuckoo! *wacko* No... A shop for prostheses, perhaps.... 8-| I'm running rather low on hooks and peglegs and have no idea how to make a minifig-scale eyepatch; it would seem rather similar to El Bacalao, no? ;-) Pictures soon! Governor Mister Phes Posted February 24, 2008 Governor Posted February 24, 2008 When the this MOC is finished it might be a candidate for the frontpage of Classic-Pirates.com - maybe even Eurobricks too... Quote
SlyOwl Posted February 28, 2008 Author Posted February 28, 2008 Well, I've reorganised the Wonder Emporium, added a basketball reference and sent off my Bricklink order, containing a certain Walrus whose head might just appear ;-) ... But I need some more ideas for the emporium... I aim to finish this by, say, the 9th of March, to make things simple ;-) ...Maybe even Eurobricks too... I've never seen a MOC frontpaged, except Benk's...I didn't get that treatment *sing* j/k Pictures may come later this evening, depending on how I get on with my English essay and Japanese Palaeontology speech :-P Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted February 28, 2008 Governor Posted February 28, 2008 At the time of the Pirate Halloween Competition I was the only one updating the Classic-Pirates.com Frontpage News. But now we have a wonderful volunteer taking care of it so I now have the time to frontpage pirate news on the Eurobricks. Quote
SlyOwl Posted February 28, 2008 Author Posted February 28, 2008 What I meant was that I was under the impression that the EB frontpage was only used for news, not MOCS. It just came out wrong :'-) Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted February 28, 2008 Governor Posted February 28, 2008 Exceptional MOCs have been posted there in the past. But only really really really exceptional Pirate MOCs can be posted there so don't disappoint us X-D Quote
Captain Zuloo Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I love the way you used the hands to make the roof of the hut. If anything I think you should add a shipwright office, a naval office and maybe an inn. Good job anyway. Keep up the good work! Captain zuloo *sweet* Quote
SlyOwl Posted March 2, 2008 Author Posted March 2, 2008 (edited) It's finished! However, I'll post pictures in this thread so you can have more input before I finalise it. This is the reason for the poor photomography; it's not really fully necessary for a WIP. ;-) More pictures later this evening *y* ...And here they are! Slam dunk! X-D Old people's picnic! :-P Parents: how many times must you try to reconcile your children to walk round a museum? :-D Wonder Emporium/Curiosity Shop/Museum of Stuff/Junk Shop... Upstairs. The thing to the left of the head in the jar and suit of armour is a stuffed tortoise - too absract? Or fine? Who's that having fun flushing the toilet? ;-) Downstairs. Photomo doesn't do it justice... |-/ Other room upstairs. Rather boring - any ideas to spice it up? Exlposion in the soup kitchen X-O Criticisms and suggestions welcome! X-D Edited March 2, 2008 by SlyOwl Quote
Wouwie Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Nice! It's great! Especially the store. But how did you make those arms on the guy with the staf and cape in this pic? Quote
SlyOwl Posted March 2, 2008 Author Posted March 2, 2008 (edited) But how did you make those arms on the guy with the staf and cape in this pic? There's a hand on each side of the central clip. The pin of the hand slots into an old skeleton arm ball joint ;-) Edit: Oh wait, there's two of them. The store owner's arms are made from spare pnuematic tubing scraps. Scouty Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Excellent stuff going on here *wub* ! Other room upstairs. Rather boring - any ideas to spice it up? How about a pirate flag on the ceiling? >:-) Quote
Jipay Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Add someone trying to push him from behind ! *skull* Quote
MagPiesRUs Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Magnificent! I love it *wub* The museum owner looks great, and I really like that cannibal skeleton. I do get the feeling it's a little crowded now, perhaps you could take a few people out.. Other than that though, it's great, I love just about everything about this MOC *wub* Brilliant work, I look forward to seeing fantastic MOCs from you *y* *y* Quote
SlyOwl Posted March 3, 2008 Author Posted March 3, 2008 (edited) But only really really really exceptional Pirate MOCs can be posted there so don't disappoint us X-D I hope this isn't too disamoppointing :-$ If it is, tell me what to do! ;-) How about a pirate flag on the ceiling? >:-) I don't think I'm going to take a photo of the underside of the roof; there's nothing except some rafters and the old man's legs X-D Add someone trying to push him from behind ! *skull* I do get the feeling it's a little crowded now, perhaps you could take a few people out... When there's a problem, there's a solution! -Jack Stone >:-( Edited March 3, 2008 by SlyOwl Quote
LegoLyons Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 It looks awesome, i like the humour and the amount of stuff you have included. I noticed something new every time I looked. Thanks for sharing it with us. Quote
