Ayrlego Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 (edited) Commander Matthew Allcock RN, current Mayor of Port Woodhouse, has modified one of the settlement's whalers for the Gunboats for the Colonies incentive. The Royal Navy operates a number of these whalers throughout the Paradise Isles, and Commander Allcock deemed them perfect for conversion to a gunboat. In the new configuration, a set of oars has been sacrificed to make way for the cannon, reducing the number of oars from ten to eight, which together with the weight of the cannon, reduces the maximum speed. A makeshift mast can be attached for longer coastal journeys. The crew consists of a Royal Navy Midshipman, a Petty Officer coxswain, eight sailors on the oars and three Royal Marines manning the cannon. Commander Allcock, with full approval of his cousin the Governor, Colonel Dirk Allcock, offers the gunboat to Her Majesties Terra Novan Navy without conditions, and without the need for compensation. Long Live the Queen! ---------- Some of you will recognise the hull here, which I have had around for sometime. I never had any intentions of licensing it, but the faction is in need, so the Allcocks have responded! Full credit for the design of the hull goes to Lego Monster (Ed Diment) whose original design you can see below: US Navy Whaler secrets of the build by Ed Diment EDIT: Replaced the pictures with ones with the rowers facing the correct way! Thanks @Drunknok Edited December 9, 2017 by Ayrlego Quote
Dukesc Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 That's a nice gunboat! I like that it has a rudder with the option of a mast and sail. Quote
Darnok Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 (edited) Nice build! I like the relative smoothness of the hull. The amount of minifigs is also very accurate for a gunboat of this size and age - the distinction between rowing crew, gun crew and commanding officers is well done. Thanks for the hull construction shot (and link to more of it) - very helpful! One big critique though: please reposition the rowing minifigs, because currently they are looking in the wrong direction! This has been corrected. Apart from that: excellent MOC. Bregir Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 I was about to comment on the young midshipman being unlikely to be able to ever pass for Lieutenant, unless he could make his rowers ply their oars the proper way, but it seems that little blunder had been corrected ;) I do think the rowers should be drilled a bit more, as their current oar angle is less than coordinated! :P I think I have commented on this design before, but in any case, I will say that it looks absolutely fantastic. Very nice way to shape the hull, and a perfect vessel for the gunboat class. Also, I am thinking that this one is moving into class 2 territory. It is quite a bit bigger than many of the current class 1 boats out there. (Eg. My own old colonial gunboat and Drunknok's mark I.) Thoughts? Quote
Kai NRG Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 Very nice gunboat Ayrlego! The white hull looks great in the bright blue water! Quote
Bodi Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 Looking good, nice boat, fully equipped and crewed. Quote

This gunboat, as well as my Mk.II, are still significantly smaller than my Cranky Parrot, which is good fit for class 2. But all classes have grey areas, and in these cases we are in one. Quote
Captain Dee Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 Beautiful gunboat. I don't remember if I commented on the original (landing scene) but this adaptation looks great. The hull technique is very good and looks lovely in white. 3 hours ago, Bregir said: I am thinking that this one is moving into class 2 territory. It seems much smaller than the second of the 2 photo links from the gunboat topic, which is what I envision being a class 2. But good work regardless of classification. Quote
blackdeathgr Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 Nice photo! And I also like that you've diversified the crew with different sailors, navigators and gun crew's clothes. Regarding classification, I am on Dee with that one, believing that all gunboats with oars (and without a sail/mast), should be class 1, regardless of factions. A gunboat is built to protect a harbor after all and cannot stand BoBS open seas simply with her oars. Still, since we are loose on the classification procedures, it's your choice should you want it to register it as class 2. Quote

I had experimented with fitting a mast for the photo, but I don't think it looked very good, so I removed it and cheated by simply mentioning it in the text! 16 hours ago, Drunknok said: Nice build! Thanks Drunknok, and thanks for picking up I had the rowers around the wrong way - I have no idea why I did that.... that's what you get for rushing I guess! 11 hours ago, Bregir said: I was about to comment on the young midshipman being unlikely to be able to ever pass for Lieutenant, unless he could make his rowers ply their oars the proper way, but it seems that little blunder had been corrected ;) I do think the rowers should be drilled a bit more, as their current oar angle is less than coordinated! :P I think I have commented on this design before, but in any case, I will say that it looks absolutely fantastic. I think the Petty Officer must have been rolling his eyes at the young officers mistake! I was intending that this would be firmly a class 1 gunboat, I have something else in mind for a class 2 (although my preliminarily build is looking more like a class 3....) 10 hours ago, Kai NRG said: Very nice gunboat Ayrlego! Thanks Kai, I find the trans light blue water always brightens up an otherwise dull MOC! 9 hours ago, Bodi said: Looking good, nice boat, fully equipped and crewed. I wasn't sure about the white at first but the curves were much cheaper and more readily available than any other colour. Having said that the white has really grown on me! I agree, I think it should be a Class 1. 7 hours ago, blackdeathgr said: Nice photo! And I also like that you've diversified the crew with different sailors, navigators and gun crew's clothes.
