Posted February 25, 200817 yr I was wondering what you do with your sets after you've built them and admired them for a while. Do you put the pieces in with your other parts or do you keep them whole disassembled in storage to rebuild them again. Edited February 25, 200817 yr by Erdbeereis1
February 25, 200817 yr I usually keep them and still look at them just move them around and customized some of the minifigs
February 25, 200817 yr Due to space constraints, those that will fit go in fold-up crates (except that they don't fold up when they're full of LEGO). I have a crate for each of the SW eps (two for ep-5) and one for all my non-SW. All crates have signs on indicating what's in them
February 25, 200817 yr I didnt do many MOCs or dioramas so I keep my collection displaying around all my room. :-)
February 25, 200817 yr Some disassembled and sorted into my inventory. Others remain built but in boxes (the DHL shipping ones used by S@H actually), ready for display again later, incorporation into a custom scene, or for modifying rather than simply sorting out the parts. I have rather severe space constraints, but I do have a bench half the length of the room, so there's enough space for building and/or a linear display arrangement. I've also one or two surfaces for displaying a couple of individual models (currently just Dwarves Mine out). *Everything* else is in the DHL boxes or in the sorting bins/drawers/tubs/boxes. It's really annoying not having more space. I'm not getting good use of my Castle '07 Lego, but I don't want to just use it for parts yet; I want to modify the sets or use them in a display. However, space is being used for building MOC castle so it has to wait.
February 25, 200817 yr I keep all of my sets assembled and displayed around my room. Although, I really don't have space for more, many end up on the floor in the corner. But it's okay, because (even at my age) they'll all get played with at some point or another. :-D
February 26, 200817 yr This basically is This. I like to modify my sets after I build them *sweet* 8-|
February 26, 200817 yr Most of my sets are kept built up on display. I use four or five packs of these arranged along the walls in my room to hold everything. I'm running out of space in there though and will probably move everything to a separate room soon. I also make various modifications to almost everything. The changes can be anywhere between trivial (like swapping a few parts around) and substantial (making a somewhat different model using the same parts, or adding functionality in the case of Technic models). If I buy multiple copies of something, I only keep one built up and the rest go into my spare parts collection. In some cases though, I combine a few related sets (stuff from the same theme, or multiple copies of a set) to make an MOC using mostly only those parts. The SP2 ship in my brickshelf account initially started out like that, and I did something similar with a pair of Explorien Android bases recently.
February 26, 200817 yr I have changed; or morphed if you want to call it that; in my model building. Now what sets I buy, I basically look at the set for modifying. For example I purchased the new Cargo Plane last week. I built the set as is just to see how TLC created it. My plan for this set though is to do a total renovation to it. I plan to use my scaling technique mentioned below for my final MOC. My building technique now is totally based on a particular scaling system I came up with. Every model that I can use my scale on I do. I have recently taken my Passenger Plane from storage, and rebuilt it to my scaling systems specifications. Now my Passenger Plane is at a scale of 140' long, with a wingspan of 115'. The 8-stud body width comes to being 11.36' wide. A width that falls in the narrow-body style of airliners. I research pictures & original specs of actual planes, locomotives, etc... before I modify a particular set. I have taken my years of building & creating models, and added an engineering twist to the mix. This is why my modeling technique uses a scaling system. Unfortunetly I have ran into the problem that the minifig is a scale of its own. I do not concern myself with the difference. All I care about is the minifig looks more realistic among my MOC's. Model On!!
February 26, 200817 yr About half of the stuff that I have is assembled and will remain assembled, being put in the room for LEGO stuff only. Due to lack of space I've been forced to put some sets back in their boxes. They go there either fully disassembled or partly disassembled. Depends on the box and how big it is. I've recently been busy with disassembling some castles and putting them back in boxes. You cannot imagine how dusty they are! Even after washing them with hot soap water and a second bath with hot water (but without soap) there's still dust on them! Time for the washing machine!
February 26, 200817 yr I put them together, maybe keep some that way, but usually they end up getting redone (better, faster, stronger :-D ) via my personal touch.
February 26, 200817 yr I build them and keep them built until I need a piece from it in a moc. Then it's partly torn apart. Just so I can get the piece I want. And since I usually buy sets as partspacks, more or less, they won't stay completely built for long. Right now I have about for or five sets that are in different stages of "destruction" and one set thats still in an unopened box.
March 5, 200817 yr I usually keep mine up on display. But I save the boxes for each set, so if something comes up that I have to take them down, I can put them in the original boxes.
March 6, 200817 yr Once I have built them they get displayed for about 2 weeks then I dismantle them and place all the bits in to zip lock bags and all back in the box. I have to do this other wise the misses might knock them on to the floor while dusting. Boxes then get put away in cubdard up staires that has a lock on it so my kids cant get in and play with the sets. When I am building a MOC (now I know what that means) I have a huge box of bits but if I need bits out of boxed sets I put a note in the box they came out of so when I get replacements they can go back in so I always have complete boxed sets. Quite anal I know. Gallop
