Has anyone ever tried to buy the instructions for a set, then buy all the peices individually from bricklink?

it would take awhile to get it together, but you just might save some money.

whaddaya think?

I have tried this with a few sets, and it seems that the only way you can really save money by doing it that way is if you already have a majority of the parts & you are just trying to get a few that are either rare, or ones you just need to complete it...

I am also currently doing it this way for a few PIrate sets, so I will let you know if I succeed ;)

My LEGO dealer does that with Pirate sets. He buys in bulk from eBay and BrickLink then replicates sets to auction on eBay.

it seems a guy from australia buys his parts and instructions for the old sets at bricklink. many of the old sets were never released there, so it seems... that was the only way to complete his collection...

still, must be expensive... especially the rare parts...

i have done this too i did not actually do it for a lego set but i found instructions to make a ww2 german panther tank made by Daniel Siskind so i had to then find all the blocks off of bricklink

I have done this before, however, most sets have a few parts that are expensive and you end up spending more. I also have found that the cheapest Bricklink shops have higher minimum order. This is ok if you want to build several sets, but if I need only $10 worth of parts and the minimum is $30, I'm forced to buy more. I could go to a more expensive shop where there is no min. order but then I would probably spend $2-$5 more for the same $10 bag of parts I could have received from the cheap shop. Now I would be just wasting my money and driving myself crazy over it. I will then go back to the cheap shop and order the $10 worth I need and spend $20 more on parts that I think I will need in the future (and I'm usually wrong).

Yeah, that's my LEGO dealer. Conveniently he lives near me and he lets me come and pick the sets up so I save heaps on postage!

Check out some of his current auctions

LEGO Pirate 6281 Pirates Perilous Pitfall

LEGO Pirate 6250 Crossbone Clipper

LEGO Pirate island 6279 Skull Island

LEGO Pirate ship 6268 Renegade Runner

I got all those sans Renegade Runner from him... You should his place dudes... LEGO all over EVERYTHING!

I suppose you wouldn't mind 'picking up' any fellow eurobricks member's order either? ;) ;) ;)

God Bless,

Nathan

Picking up is no problem whatsoever. However, the same problem of having them transported to you would still exist I'm affraid. Unless of course you don't mind me holding onto them until further notice!
