"I was three!" Karie exclaims. "I did not decide to keep her out of my life! She made a choice to make sure I had something, a future outside of the Hovels! There was good in her, and you cut her down!" Karie didn't realize it but she had been moving closer and closer to Patrica throughout the argument, her emotions and her guttural anger swelling forth. Karie couldn't remember being this hateful. "How dare you chide me and pin this on me! This has nothing to do with what others have done, Patricia! Just you and what you did to Kayla!" Karie drew her Heirloom Dagger and pointed it at Patricia. She wasn't within striking distance, but with a good enough run... one slash against the throat and she'd have done it. Kayla would be avenged.

"Stay out of my way, Germ! This doesn't involve you." Karie doesn't even turn to look at Germ as she shouts at him. She continues to speak to Patricia, although it was more shouting at this point. "This doesn't involve anyone else but me and Cousland, and if anyone dares step between the two of us I'll personally shout you off the ramparts!"

"You'd murder someone who's down and can't answer for themselves. You're a coward, Patricia. You're a snivelling, coward. How many people have you executed who stole to feed their families? How many people were executed because they were stuck in a cycle of greed you stood to uphold?" Karie could do it. She knew she could do it. All it would take is a flick of her wrist. She took a step forward. "You're lucky, Patricia, you're actually conscious and able to defend yourself. Why shouldn't you deserve to die?"

Things were drawing to a nasty head.

The Munchkin carefully eased the Bifrost Blades out of their holders.

"And how many years after that did you avoid her, how many years did you try and forget her? Did you even look for your sister? That girl's death is on her own hands and if you feel some sort of guilt for not being there to fix her, that is something you'll need to live with."

"Do not question me on my actions!" Karie swung the dagger in front of her in refutal. "I was but a child when I was taken away, do you remember everything from your childhood? From the age of three? I was told to forget about her from my foster parents!"

"You think an apology would have saved her? That she would have gotten off scot-free? How many bakers deserve to have their bread stolen, how many fishermen their catch? What right do the suffering have to take out their suffering on others?" Patricia eyed the dagger, "Is that it? You're so miserable that you can't stand to be alone with your hurt, so instead you have to inflict it upon others? Do you think that'll satisfy your rage, do you think it'll end here? How many more will suffer at your hand? When will the world be 'fair' enough in your eyes for you to stow your blade? You want to kill me? Go ahead, there's a dozen lawmen to take my place just as you will take your sisters."

Karie allowed Patricia to speak as she slowly walked up to her, dropping her other items in the sand of the harbour. As she finished, Karie reached her. Karie forcefully grabbed Patricia by the back of her hair and held her Heirloom Dagger, the same Dagger Kayla gave to her when she was sent away, to Patricia's neck: adrenaline causing her to feel light headed. She breathed heavily as she did.

This is it. Karie thought to herself, her hand trembling with anticipation. Kayla's going to be avenged. All it takes is a flick of the wrist. She steeled herself for what she was going to do, what she had wanted to do for five years after learning about what had happened at the Founder's Day Ball. She looked Patricia in the eyes, readying herself, anticipating the moment when she would slash at the Watch Captain's throat and watch the life drain from Patricia's eyes. Karie felt like she was in the spotlight, and all she had to do was complete this tragedy. Blood for blood. An eye for an eye. A life for a life.

Karie inhaled sharply and exhaled sharply. She loosened her grip on Patricia's hair. It had only been a few seconds, but it felt like forever. She looked at her dagger, reflecting in the light, as it slowly came away from Patricia's throat. She was visibly still tense, but her voice had found resolve and her volume had lowered. She looked Patricia in the eyes. "Your right. Nothing will bring back my sister. Nothing I do will satisfy my rage. But this is ending here. This is over." Karie walked away from Patricia and didn't look back.

"I may not want your life...but I do want your badge.  Once we've dealt with Rosier, we can elect a new Captain of the Watch--and this time, hopefully we'll get someone with a heart, not a rulebook."  With that, the Skirmisher turns his back on his former superior, following Karie in the general direction of Illdria and the Shadeaux.

Surprised at the outburst, and uncertain as to the outcome, Dyric reached back for a bolt in his quiver, ready to back up Karie if things went south.

Rone continues to silently observe as the showdown concludes. A new Captain... they were really cleaning the slate. New Veterans, new captain, no houses. They should probably start collecting names. He could already think of a certain Skirmisher that would probably fit the Captain job well...

"Depends... what sort of world are you intending to show me this time?"

"A Whole New World," Hoke says in a sarcastic sing-song voice as he scoops the two diminutives up.

"Don't blow it up.  T'would be a waste in more ways than one."

Hoke once again looks over the entire group, shaking his head.

"We should be off if we are going to finish this."

Lind quickly caught the gist of what Germ was trying to accomplish.

@Flare "Hey, Benji - as a Prophet, don't you have Glossolalia?

Could you talk to this Wyvern for us, and find out what it's plans are? We might like to take a quick ride, if it's amenable to the idea..."

Hhhmmm, mabye... Debating what to do.

Germ waits to see if anyone has an answer from the Wyvern.

Pretzel joins Hoke, or flies alongside him on his Flying Cross if such a thing is possible.

He turns to Arthur, slightly confused.

"I thought you were pretty content in the watch? I must have completely misread you."

Meanwhile, Waldorf whispers to Petaldan,

"**** man, I don't think I'm ready to go square up to any demon, just now."

"I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is the demon that did Annie in."

"Wow! That's scary, actually. I mean...I want to avenge her and all, but I'm not really feeling all that heroic right now..."

"I was pretty scared myself just now (I hope I didn't wet my diaper), but sometimes being a hero is just about doing the right thing, even when you don't feel like it.

"Well, I'm not sure about all that, but I definitely don't want to be in this fort when it gets thrown to high heaven. Let's go."

So saying, Petaldan and Waldorf head for the ships.

"You seem to be painting her life as some sort of saint, Arthur. She was a criminal plain and simple, all the heroes had orders to bring her and her accomplices in dead or alive that night." Patricia pauses looking the skirmisher up and down, "Remember, when you came to the Watch's doorstep that night long ago you expected death, I told you what the law required and you placed the burden of guilt upon yourself. That thief annoyed me just as you did, the only difference is the law clearly outlined her punishment."

QM Note: Right now I have, 4 affirmations of blowing the fort and 2 against.

The majority of the Paladin and Town watch forces join the Founders aboard the golden dragon, Hoke and a few heroes mount Torc, as Euflear and Germ along with a few of the ex-Bonapartes scramble onto the Vermilion Wyvern. The remainder of the prisoners and sailors join the heroes upon the Magpie as the dragons and ship begin to hastily make for the harbor of Eubric. A few hundred meters out, Dyric spots the trail of well lain gunpowder set out on the beach. With a well aimed shot the assassin launches a flaming arrow which lights the trail snaking throughout the fortress to the well positioned explosives the sailors had quickly deployed. As the Bonaparte ships nearly reach the fort a gigantic fireball engulfs the horizon as wood, stone, and glass is flung sky high. The thunder of the explosion reverberates across the water as the ruins of the fort go up in smoke and a raging inferno. The Bonaparte ships change course and for the time being hold back from following the groups into the harbor. Several minutes pass before all of the heroes, founders, prisoners, sailors, paladins, and Town watch disembark onto the mainland at the harbor.

Throlar glowered. He had been growing steadily angrier as Karie and Arthur's confrontation with the Watch captain continued. While he felt sympathetic toward Karie and agreed with Arthur's assessment now was not the time for this. Rosier had probably already reached the portal to the city and every second wasted on personal drama was another second in which innocents could be dying. He had been about to say something to that effect but the whole thing had ended before he had the chance. Now as Patricia's badge lay glittering on the sands he felt an impulse build within him, driving him to act. Almost without thinking his hand lashed out like a serpent and grabbed the badge, stuffing it into his pocket before anyone could react. Then, without a word, he turned on his heel and marched back aboard the ship.

Throlar tried to watch the explosion, but he was forced to turn his head away to shield his eyes from the light of the blast. When he looked back there was only a rising cloud of black smoke and the shattered remains of the island, punctuated by the occasional piece of falling debris. For about the fifteen-thousandth time in his life, he sighed. The world had changed today, and only time would tell if it was for better or worse.

"Yes. Unfortunately we don't know exactly where though. What we do know is that somewhere under Eubric is a portal that leads to what Euflear described as a 'city between worlds' where the survivors of Rosier's conquest of Faerie fled, that'll be the demon's goal. We don't know where that is exactly but the Temple of Zoot seems to be as good a bet as any."

Didn't someone mention under the "Hall"? Their was some sort of entrance, or am I just blowing smoke up something. Let me try this again, magic eight compass where is Rosier?

"Aye. All we need to do is get to the Hall. I'm sure at least a few of us remember how to get to that damn Temple..."

The rogue looked up towards the city of Eubric outlined against the sky as he clambered out onto the dock, inhaling deeply. Truth be told, he almost wasn't expecting to make it back from Fort Freedom. Would've been a hell of a way to go. Then again...he'd never passed up the chance to do battle with an archdemon. And this one nearly destroyed Heroica. Atramor turned his attention to the civilians- Bellanotte, Waldorf, and the rest of the non-Heroicans.

"This is it, mates. I'm not exaggeratin' when I say we're walkin' into hell. We made it outta the suicide mission, but now is the time for ya' to run off. Ya've saved Eubric from itself. You're as much heroes as the rest of us, but if things go badly for us, Eubric's still in one piece. There'll be rebuildin' to do, and...well, all sorts of post-war nonsense, but my point is, your fight is done. Get outta here, scatter so the Bonies don't find ya', and if anyone asks, tell 'em we're servin' a fairy eviction notice to a nosy archdemon in our haunted basement. We make it back out alive, all the drinks are on me." His mouth twitched into a smirk. "After all, ya'll are heroes, and everyone knows heroes drink free."

He swiveled to face the remainder of the party - all Heroicans at one point or another.

"We got our target. Ya' got any final thoughts for these people, now's the time."

Stepping away from Germ, Rone makes his way over to Bellanote. She, too, had come a long way from when he'd first met her. He could have sworn she stood a little straighter now, a little more confidence hiding behind that pale complexion.

You did good today, kid. I mean that, you should be proud of yourself. Hel, I'm proud of you. But like Atramor said, this is it. You've proven yourself, you've fought for freedom and you've got your family back. You've served this city more than most of the houses ever will - today, you're as much of a Hero as anyone else here. So, take some rest. Be with your family. Let us handle this one. You've earned it.

Karie got off the ship shaking herself off. "I never liked travelling around by boat." She looked behind her at Fort Bonaparte, or what was left of Fort Bonaparte. Smoke billowed into the late evening sky as the reflection of the fire danced across the water. The small silhouettes of Bonaparte ships could be seen moving away from the fort, clearly in disarray.

"Well, I was going to address the crowd, but seems as if my points have already been made." Karie remarked. She felt herself coming back to normal after her adrenaline rush from earlier. She waited to hear if anyone was insistent on staying, although she doubted many of them wanted to.

The former Crescent Representative watched the knight lay claim to the Watch's command. He had been planning to nominate the Dwarf for Veteran Knight - but perhaps he would be better suited as leader of the watch, having both Patricia's drive for law and order, and Arthur's love of justice.

He silently nodded, approvingly.

Lind clapped.

"Beautiful! Haven't seen an explosion with that much power since we fought Immortalis!"

Atramor pointedly looked away as he disembarked the ship and inhaled the last of his Smelling Salts.

"Euflear...if I never get the chance again, I'd like you to know it was a honor serving with you. Best luck rebuilding the Fae.

Bellanotte...please tell your family it was an honor to represent them. I only regret that I never was able to serve as a Dragoon."

He looked at Atramor.

"We might really want to divide up that loot now, before we plunge into the Hall...

I'd like one of those Deadly Venoms, if possible. And maybe some Gold...but definitely one of the Venoms."

As he drinks another Nostrum. If you want to buy a Nostrum off me for 50 Gold I will be fine with that.

"Wonderful!" Lind makes the swap.

"Any chance I could buy one of your two Smelling Salts for 40 Gold - same mark-up?"

Fine, but now you seriously need to shut up. Almost realized he probably has some sort of come back...

The Black Knight retrieved his cards from the Magpie, slid off the Immortal Palms, and pulled on his Swift Boots.

@Waterbrick Down Did the collapse of the Union and the Alliance mean that our Seals no longer work? Because mine isn't in my inventory, or showing in my stats?

Lind handed over the 40 Gold while chuckling. "Haven't you ever heard that the customer is always right?

Terrible service at this establishment - do you have a manager I could talk to?"

Do you really think that?

Throlar was surprised by the angel's sudden remark.

What do you mean? he thought.

Karie, do you really think she should've waited for Rosier to be defeated to deal with her sister's killer?

Throlar tensed for a moment, before deflating like a set of bagpipes that had just been sat on.*

Yes, but it's unreasonable to think that isn't it? Asking someone to give up something that big, especially considering the times I've put my issues before everyone else's. But it's not just that, Karie nearly executed someone there! I don't mind the Captain stepping down, or being punished for the actions she's taken to 'keep the peace'. But I don't feel we really have the right to kill someone who isn't fighting back without any semblance of legal process. In an empty wilderness hundreds of miles from any civilization you might have to take such measures, but this is a massive city!

Is something the matter?

Yes, it's something to do with Heroica, the way everyone's talking in particular. You know why I took the badge? I took it because I was afraid if one of the other heroes did they'd keep it.

Throlar held up a hand.

"Before anyone leaves there's something I want to say. Detective Hoples," he held out the badge, "this is the badge of the captain of the Watch, it belongs to whoever takes Patricia's place. See that they get it. Oh, and... thanks. For what you did earlier. That was a brave thing to do."

"Lind, I think Euflear is coming with us. They are a Heroican after all, albeit a former one."

*Except that he was much quieter.

He shook his head. He'd never served with the Watch, but with their reputation, he doubted the replacement would be any better. Throlar, at least, was reliable.

"Yes, that's why I said, if I never get the chance...This is a very dangerous battle, ahead, Throlar - not all of us may end up surviving."

"I fully appreciate that- no that's a lie, no-one can fully appreciate the possibility of their own death- but... you're right. You should probably take the time to get any personal stuff you can off your chest." he sighed,* "You have a right to it after all, I suppose. I shouldn't begrudge you a few seconds."

"Lind, why are you looking at me like that? You seem disappointed in me for some reason."
