Vindsval roars as the heroes are both victorious and cheated of their ultimate victory. He slams a fist into the ground, crimson energy dispersing.

I swore the Wanderer a meal, this is not how this day should have ended.  IT now has the possibility of return.  You foolish Barbarian.

I pray your sacrifice is worth it.  But at least for now, we are free of Her influence.  But, this end only ensures that the hall must stand.  IT must remain.

Let us return to the hall, sort our fates, and discuss our future.  I miss my barrel and the company of friends.

OOC: I would love for Vindsval to end up with that Armor.  I would be awesome for the Witchery way to be part of his end build.

"Be at peace, Vindsval," Arthur assures, though his own face had gone a ghostly white at Torald's sudden action.  "The order of the Bearer of a Pandemonicon is a binding contract.  There is no means, in Olegaia or Azazot, that may break that order, and with the last Pandemonicon lost to that realm there no longer exists a way by which it may be rescinded; demons cannot use that forbidden tome, and no order coerced of a bearer will function.  Never again will Rosier trouble this realm, and I for one shall rest easier for it."

"Torald, please don't do anything foolish..." is all Petaldan can say, before the big Barbarian makes his leap into the dark.

Petaldan stares into the void looking utterly dejected, his body appearing to crumble beneath him. Words fail him entirely and he simply bursts into tears as his body slumps into a ball on the floor.

Meanwhile, Pretzel accepts Arthur's hand and, after rising, gives the skirmisher a hug. Somehow it felt the only right response after a battle like this one.

Casting his eyes around, he notices the wailing Ezeran and Petaldan.

"Darn. I mean, it was great when Byblos did it, but when it's a hero...it's different. Poor bloke! I guess in some sort of way, he fulfilled his destiny in doing so or something. Don't know how strong his spirit is for standing a trip like that, but I guess that's what being a hero is all about. Wow! He's a good kid, that barbarian."

Hearing, Germ's comment, Pretzel cats a withering glance at him.

"If Byblos, great scholar that he was, had to allow himself to be swallowed up by the void in order to banish an archdemon, I don't think we had much of a choice here. Though trust heroes to always think of some way of escape. Still, the barbarian clearly thought it his duty to do what he did. I would have wished that someone like you would have taken that role on. Wouldn't you even prefer it there to here?"

"The Pandemonicon is not a tome so easily discarded.  The demon could have been banished without such a sacrifice--Byblos himself did it once, in Azzurat--but that was not the purpose.  Byblos cast himself into the Void to keep his copies of the Pandemonicon out of corrupt mortal hands, and no doubt our heroic barbarian Torald--" here Arthur stumbled, surprised by his own ability to utter the Pandemonicon-bearer's name now that he was no longer in the tome's presence "--Torald sacrificed himself to a similar end.  A tragic but noble gesture for the sake of saving us all."

Rone stumbles to his feet, gratefully accepting Arthur's help. He gives a weary nod to the other heroes, unsure what more to say.

Dyric thought for a long time, meditating on the information.

I didn't know Torald very well. There's a lot of you I don't know as well as I should. But I know that everyone here should be numbered amongst the bravest Heroes in history. Torald is in that number. I won't pretend to understand all the rules of this book, but if Torald's sacrifice will finally bring us some measure of peace... well, I'm sure he went out knowing he was doing the right thing.

He glanced back, eyes resting where the archdemon once stood.

It's finished. Rosier is dead. We've done it. Together.

A smile rests on his lips.

Now, to business. Who has Requiem? I want my bow back.

Atramor lowers the Decamodifier as Euflear unleashes a barrage of fire on the archdemon, and she shrivels into a husk. The rogue tenses at the sight of the portal springing into existence, and instantly whirls around to face the battle mage carrying the Pandemonicon...

With those words he says to the book. It's time. Let us go. Torald jumps into the rift with the book, making sure to keep his promise.

...only to see him diving into the rift. He opens his mouth slightly - but says nothing, gritting his teeth and giving Torald a grim nod as he jumps into the rift.

"Aye. I was there in Azzurat and in Spesiala. Those books are...somethin' else entirely. Better off where nobody can get to 'em...damn...kid was fast for a wizard. Well, done's done..."

The rogue sheathed his claws and approached the bodies of the fallen Veterans, dropping down to one knee as he looked them over. Dead without a doubt. Not surprising...but damn unfortunate. He closed each of their eyes. Kukulkan. He'd hardly spent much time with the orc, but word was he was a witch like Atramor once was. Maybe that's how he got involved in the Wolfgang. Jacq every hero knew...very well. Hours on hours of training. It'd be a quiet training room from here forward. And finally, the Oracle. The rogue let out a sharp sigh as he took off his hat. Was it weeks in that desert...or months? The images of that kingdom swallowed up in sand and demons stuck with him, that much was for certain. Those were sorrows that felt...wrong to drown away in rum. And the Oracle? She'd lived with them for decades.

Atramor stood. Calmly he set his hat back on his head, straightened out his coat.

"One hero...four Veterans...innocent people. Soldiers blinded by leaders. Dozens of dragons. We lost a lot here. Again." He eyed up the black walls of the Temple of Zoot. A place of evil, no doubt.

But also a place of endings.

"That said.......we did good, mates. What happens next...Hel if I know. But here? We did good. Don't be forgetin' that. No matter what."

Kiray takes a few ragged breaths as the battle finishes, utterly exhausted and emotionally drained. She watches, stunned as Torald makes his leap. "Well, it's over. Or seems like it." Hearing Arthur's suggestion, she responds, "A drink first to soothe pain, then we can clean up. The city owes us at least a moment's rest."

"The drink, too. That also has gotta happen."

Noticing to late what Torald was doing Ezeran tries to reach his friend in vain screaming "No, no, NOOOOO! Those realms are not for mortals!! " before slumping down on his knees. Ezeran weeps as the silence after the battle sets in, the tears leaves burn marks on his clothes as a strange red glow flickers in his eyes, unseen by others.

Atramor frowns, looking between the prone sorcerer and the scorch mark left by the rift. The rogue exhales.

"He ain't alone over there, mate. Smartest guy I know is on the other side of that rift. Might not be for mortals. But it is for heroes. The ones nobody is gonna forget."

His gaze slid down to the Veterans. Gently, he lifts the body of the Sand Queen. There'd be a time to mourn the people behind the titles. But in this moment...they were the Veterans.

"Someone get Fox, and the Serpent. And don't leave all of that weed's stuff down here. We can put it to better use."

The rogue looked around once more.

"And let's get outta here. We have a perfectly good Hall upstairs. And nobody to stop us stayin'."

With that, Atramor starting leading the way out of the Temple.

Takeing a second to try make sure it was real, Germ didn't want to tricked again. Then Germ grabbed his whip and then tried to clean the slime off the whip (even with fire from the whip). The next thing Germ did was grab the "blades" from Roiser and take a few practice swings before putting them in the loot pile. Their was a look on his face of not that impressive. That is when he saw "Total" jump into the void.

Couldn't he just throw the book into the void? He was never the brightest person around, but I didn't think he was this dumb...

The Black Knight cast the Demon a stern look. "He was not 'dumb,' not in any sense of the word. The Pandemonicon bonds with its host - he couldn't have removed it if he had tried.

I might not have been so quick to enter the void...but he seems to have made a promise, and we just saw him keep it.

He was not dumb. He...seems to have been on one of the bravest people here."

OOC: Wouldn't say no to that halberd, not that it particularly matters now.  If Arthur's borrowed something from you, feel free to reclaim it; I'll probably go back through the topic in a couple days to track down whatever Arthur's lent out and write it down neatly for posterity.

OoC: I wanted the halberd for Class purposes, but I was trying to wait until the battle was over before I said so...that ways, Lind could go Dragoon without loosing any of the perks of Black Knight. Also, I can't use a longsword as a Dragoon...

@Waterbrick Down Did the loot from the Founders dissipate as well? Because they didn't vanish from anyone's inventory, so I was assuming it might have survived their destruction.

The Black Knight walked to where the Founders lay, and, taking his shovel, slowly began to dig their dust a grave.

Finishing his work, he stood up, and waved to Heckz.

"Heckz, please use your Garnet to make them a headstone."

After the contrary mage formed the earth into a suitable headstone, Lind knelt down and with his Ethereal Deck, slowly began to trace letters into it.

"I think Arthur summed it up succinctly enough, Vindsval." Karie replies, shrugging her shoulders solemnly. "I don't think the Rosier's going to be bothering this, or any other realm, any time soon."

Karie lowers her head. She wasn't particularly familiar with Torald, but he was clearly going ahead with an action that was both terrifyingly courageous and foolhardy. Part of her wished she was able to step in Torald's place, but she knew that she'd ultimately regret that decision more than if she didn't.

"Safe travels, Torald. I personally will make sure that neither Heroica nor this city forgets your valiant actions here today."

I chuckle.

"It really never ends...except in dreams, eh? I mean, one would think that we had done enough for the city to all retire at this point, but really, we're just getting started if anything. I mean, reasoning with people is just about always more difficult than bashing them over the heads."

Then Let him be named Gate Keeper, and be honored for his deed.  But there is still much to be discussed.  If it is within our power I say we seal this place and let it be a shrine to all of those, present and far, who feel today.

Vindsval Places the gold and the armor in his stores and moves to the two unconscious Men.  He lifts one in each arm and begins carrying the Fox and the Serpent from the tomb of the fallen, Following Atramor back to the surface.

Seeing, Ulric already waiting at the hall, presumably ready to discuss business, my hands clench in anger, albeit almost imperceptibly.

Can't he give us a moment's respite?

I sigh and make my way over to Scheherazade.

"Anything will do, but something...and thank you."

Vindsval moves to the back of the room and lays Fox and The Serpent out on Two table tops.  He says a silent prayer over each leaves them to their peace.

He returns to where his companions are gathering at the front of the bar and slumps onto his upturned barrel at it's end.

Something Dark, Hot, and Large if you would Mistress Sheharazade.  Something that will warm within and without.

He places the borrowed bow and Guitar on the bartop in front of him.

My Thanks for their use my friends.

There is much to be done but more than anything Boomingham is exhausted. He takes a drink from the bar keep and considers of ribbing her but decides he’ll let her off easy, given her impending retirement and all. “Ulric,” he says as he sits down. Turning to Skrall he raises an eyebrow. “Understand you and this fellow are chummy now? Don’t think that means I’ll go easy on him if he tries to dispute my stake for King.”

"Did they die well?" The Norn holds a glowing gem within her palm.

"As well as any heroes ever did," Lind said, in a reassuring tone, trying to comfort the crying Norn.

Lind set down a Phoenix Incense in front of Monk Pretzel, and handed the Bifrost Blades back to Vindsval.

"Thanks for the loan - had a lot of fun using them."

OoC: Bifrost Blades shouldn't be poisoned any more. Also, unless he handed it over to someone else, Throlar is still carrying Lind's Ruby.

The Black Knight sighed as he saw the man that Heroica had fought against for years, now sitting peacefully in the Hall.

"Hoples...? I'll let one of the other heroes follow up on that."

He walked across to where the werewolf was sitting, and pulled out a chair.

"I'm going to assume you're not here to surrender.

And Boomingham, the Alliance is as dead as the Union, if not more so."

"He certainly was paranoid."

Karie nods solemnly to Asa. "They did. The Rosier is gone, and I doubt we'll be seeing her anytime soon." She turns to both Elphaba and the Ziegfried wizard. "Don't worry about that. The city is saved and you did your best. It's all one could ask for." Karie felt a sense of resolve replace her lingering sense of remorse. She'd been through so much these past few days and came out alive. She didn't know exactly how she did it but she was grateful.

Karie makes her way to the bar after making it back into the hall. It was awfully quiet. She notices Ulric sitting at one of the tables but is called away by Scheherazade.

"Scheherazade, if you're going to be retiring, take care. This hall will feel a little emptier without you, but I wouldn't want to bar you from your well deserved retirement. I guess if this is to be my last drink from you, make it a glass of water: I feel like I'm going to need to be somewhat sober for the next few hours."

"Oh, for the love of- look, I'll be disputing either of your claims to a throne!" Karie shouts from the bar. "It's obvious to me at this point Ulric's not leaving the city. If we kick him out we basically lose the support of the poor, and the last thing we need right now is another revolt. Talk it out like adults unless you want me to come over there and beat some sense into the both you. I'm tired and cranky and not in the mood to listen to a pissing contest." Karie grabbed her glass of water and drank from it heartily. She wanted to go crawl into a nice warm bed, preferably with her husband, but if Ulric was here it meant that the title of King of Eubric was up for grabs. Karie wanted nothing to do with actually lording over the city, but she'd be foolish to not pay attention to it.

Boomingham entirely ignores the Whisperer, turning his attention to Karie. “Let’s see what the wolf has to say. Wasn’t suggesting we kick him out of the city. Seems he did more than enough to save the place. Just wanted to let him know where I stood.” He winks at a sort of middle point between Karie and Ulric. “Maybe he’s here to tell me he’s finally throwing his support behind me. And one way or another someone is going to be responsible for cleaning up the city. We need some leader, a leader, whoever it is. I’ve got no trouble with the Houses but even they aren’t a leader, really.”

"They died as heroes do," explained Atramor briefly, laying down the Oracle beside her fallen compatriots and draping a cloth over them all. He stayed for only a moment longer before making his way to the bar, scooping up a fresh rum with one hand and taking a long, generous sip. He was quite certain he'd never deserved a drink more than this very moment.

"Fightin' to the end."

"Alright. Let's get this outta the way first." Atramor scratched his chin. "It's been a long day. Half the city turned against us. That's bad. But the other half listened to us. Believed in us. Includin' you. The only reason Eubric ain't bein' controlled by an archdemon right now is because of people that can think for them damn selves and can see the writin' on the wall." He passed the bottle back and forth between his hands. "I been thinkin' about it, and I don't think we would've won today if Eubric had a single leader. The Founders had to fight tooth and nail to get the city on their side. The Bonapartes, the news, everyone. It took time, because at the end of the day, Eubric's a Freeport and everyone'll think what they want. I don't think ya' should be king, Ulric. Moreover I don't think anyone should be king. But Eubric does need a kinda leadership. A group - like the Veterans - each lookin' after a part of the city. Not like the Houses - most of 'em only looked after themselves. A team, workin' together, for the betterment of Eubric. Power split to keep one another in check; if there was only Veteran, I doubt ya' would've managed to get their ear. But with six, convincin' one or two to work with ya' wasn't an impossible task, was it?"

Atramor turned in his seat to face Ulric, glancing at the rest of the party.

"I don't like ya'. Many of these heroes weren't 'round to see the Wolfgang before you tried goin' legit. I'm all for stealin' from the rich, but that wasn't all you used to be up to. All that said......ya' kept your word. Ya' helped us when few others did, and frankly, ya've done more for the poor and the oppressed than any House ever has. I'm gonna level with ya'. Nobody outside the Hovels is gonna stand for you takin' a "throne". Sorry mate. Ain't gonna happen. Good on ya' for tryin'. But you're damn right when ya' say ya' have people on your side. People that, one way or another, you been lookin' out for for years. I don't like you - but like a lotta things I don't like, you're good for this damn city. So don't be goin' anywhere. Ya' have an important bit in this next part. The part I hate..."

The rogue leaned back in his chair, slapping his hat down on his table and running a hand through his hair. He turned to eye Arthur.

"Your old lady's Valentine thing still work? We need letters to..." He frowned, and counted off his fingers. "....Noctus Shadeuax, Mabel Ziegfried, Detective Hoples, Dame Leona Kniveton...and Attina Bonaparte. We need all of 'em here in the Hall in the next hour. We're NOT reinstatin' the Houses, but Eubric is in a sorry state, and it needs good people to fix it. As for Attina...Founders are dead, fort is blown up. She needs to make peace with that."

Atramor addressed the rest of the heroes.

"Look. Puttin' a city back together is a lot more than any of us signed up for. I'd sooner face another archdemon than have to deal with this, but if we don't make a decision here, now, somebody else is gonna make it for us. I just wanna give Eubric the chance to get better so I can get back to drinkin' and fightin' evil. When these people get here I'm gonna suggest we put together some sorta council to rule Eubric. If anyone has a better suggestion, or someone else they want present for this little chat, speak up now. I wanna get this over with all at once. Sound good?"

"You're right, Atramor. As much as it sounds like a return to the past, I think it is the only solution. Besides, Ulric, look at the number of your supporters who jumped to side with the Founders when they returned. Hell, when we got to fighting them, most of the support we had came from people who used to work with the houses, though obviously, they would have had reasons for doing so. Still, it seems to me that even in the Hovels people are not entirely in agreement with the idea of you becoming king. Some maybe, but I'm not sure if even the majority are. I must say, these Founders rising from the dead has changed some of my mindsets about this city. But...Scheherazade, is there an actual message for us from Hoples?"

If there is a message from Hoples, I read it.

Dyric follows along with Atramor's list, counting on his fingers.

You don't reckon we should get your pal Mynatt on board with this? Any Ji Pei reps? How about, what's their name again, Tritech? Just seems to me like the other established factions will want a say. If you're willing to broaden the invitation, it would probably serve to put Daneeka on the list.

Speaking of, where does Heroica itself fit into your plan? We fell apart because of a lack of guidance, a lack of structure. You ask me, we need a new set of Veterans. Are you intending to connect them on the council, or have a Heroican rep?

Karie moved over to the table where Ulric, Atramor, and Lawrence were seated at, glass of water in hand, and took a seat. "Look, I'm all for getting together and having a big kumbaya, but we're not going to get that. We just blew up the Bonaparte's headquarters. I don't think them being here is going to be an amicable conversation."

Arthur slams his head down on the bar next to his Flaming Gumball.  "No," he intones sarcastically, voice slightly muffled by the counter, "I was murdered by the archdemon Rosier and every last bit of my being was flung to the edges of the universe, triggering a chain reaction that destroyed the entire Z-Mail system and prevented me from ever having to deal with people who think they alone deserve the power to rule Eubric as king ever, ever again."  The Skirmisher groans, then drags himself back up to address the request seriously.  "I...can do that.  One better, even; pretty sure Lord Knyghton himself would be willing to come out for this, and if I know him he's most likely already at the city's edge.  It's a similar scenario with Mabel; I think my Great-Aunt Zelda might be the more prudent invitation...although frankly speaking, my mother would probably be among the better picks from the family, diplomatically speaking, since she's got one of the more open minds among those of us who are of age.  She's not main branch, but after what Ulric pulled inviting Baba into the Wolfgang I don't think any of the main branch would be willing to work with him, especially not Mabel."

Rone gave a knowing smile to Whisperer. The kid was starting to learn after all.

"...Going to need a full name for this Mynatt guy if we want to send a letter, and ideally some kind of portrait or likeness--helps with accuracy.  I'm pretty sure I could wrangle an appearance from one of the Ji Pei, but I've no clue if they're still in the city or if they're in Xu at the moment.  Good call on Daneeka, though, I'll shoot him a message now."

Arthur sadly nods.  "Have to agree there.  But that said, we do need to get Hestia here, if only to decide how exactly we're dealing with her Veteran status.  I've not been particularly impressed by what she's done as a Veteran, but then again I haven't gotten to know her personally the way I did with Cain or Jacques, so I'll be looking to those of us who did for cues.  Speaking of the Veterans..."

At last, Arthur finally turns to address Ulric directly.  "Ulric.  With Kukulkan dead, what exactly are your intentions regarding leadership of the orcish rights movement, and the promises you've made to them?  I have to admit, I and some of my family have been pleased by some of the reforms you've been promising, and have even been pushing to do more to help people in our own way, but the big issue has always come back around to your trustworthiness--or rather, your potential lack thereof.  Care to make your case?"
