Thanks for that - I'm not a fan of pnuematics with all the hoses etc.
Theres no room in tower anyway to make a custom luffing system using a 11L gear rack.

No, I it’s only 5L x 5L inside and the L motor plus gearing to linear actuator fills it. Tried a mock up using two small L.A, end to end but only gain 1L travel and not very smooth due need to let one rod turn the other, by overcoming the internal clutch.

Outriggers changed to GREY housings & looks  much better than red !

Excuse poor lighting - no sun today.

This build has been a success in devising new ideas and overcoming problems, and failures but the time has come to call it a day.



Ultimately  build was a failure as it got too big and too heavy for the caster wheels resulting in gears grinding and skipping, especially when testing the various steering modes.
It has also used a huge number of parts.

Parts I am pleased with are the outriggers and the rotating crane section.
The under carriage was a big challenge and very complicated in the final version.

Video made with difficulty as can be seen in the last sequence.

I would advise watch with the sound turned OFF !!

 

Now being broken down & consigned to parts boxes !

Time to move onto a new MOC which will be smaller and hopefully not so complicated and less ambitious.

Nice to see it moving Doug. I especially like how the undercarriage moves and steers, seems very life like.

Al though I did not post before, I did follow this thread and really enjoyed your approach and seeing your build evolve. I would not call it a failure. You've probably enjoyed the building process too and learned a few things even though the end results is not completely satisfying.

Instead of saying failure I would simply say abandoning or dismantling. Failure sounds like it has all been in vein.

Just had another test run of the under carriage unit and the the problem seems to lie with the caster unit differentials, with the 12 bevel gears skipping when under load especially when performing turns, also 43.2 x 22ZR tires are soft & squash causing them to come off the hubs as caster units turn.
Going to have one last go & change them to 49.5 x 20 tires which are harder to see if that improves the traction & steering.

Thanks for your kind comments - yes the build is the enjoable part I like the most, with problem solving & getting solutions.
Its been a long build and time to move onto something else.
I will change the topic title to End of build & soon dismatling.

I have an idea for my next MOC but the scale & size depends on the right size wheels & tires.
49.5 x 20 too small & 62.4 x 20 too large !! Something in between would work. Outriggers already sorted.

Changed the tires to 49.5 x 20 but still some problem. Runs OK for a short while then starts skipping again after performing turns.

Traced fault to the caster units legs spreading causing the 12T bevel gears in the differential to lose contact with the wheel axles.

No easy way to fix without a full strip down of undercarriage, so I have leaned something !!

So on with planning my  next MOC which will be multi functional.

But first need to finish building the Ship in a Bottle ideas set.

New video showing the crane steering, working well but still occassional gear clicking when caster units roate. The rotating structure is quite heavy.
Runs best on a hard surface unlike the table cloth I use before !

98% satisfied with this epic build at last.  

PS I need to go to crane driving school !!

I use to work at UPS ontario airport and your crane look like the one at the airport. If you could add a lift and a fork lift, it can be converted into a 747 bin loader

Did you changed the diffs in starr axles in the last film ?

Do you not present your Moc´s on Lego expo´s, or is there no one in the near ?

Thanks, now stripped down ready to start my next MOC once  I sort out all the parts back into their correct storage bins.

I only keep the better MOCs. still have my TC 8 tower crane.

Yes I removed the differentials and powered only one wheel on each caster unit, the other runs free. If you look at the last video you will see a caster unit with one wheel off the ground due to the weight above making them spread.

Don’t think there are any Lego events near me in the NE of England.

It was an enjoyable process evolving the build but it’s far too large to display in my study / Lego room.

For my next MOC I need a servo motor & have to decide which previous build I have on display to rob it from !!

Volvo front loader,  Fork lift or Boydell Stomper.
