I am already starting to expect the next ultimate technic ! Since 911 and bugatti also have smaller version in "speed champion" set. Thus, I think the next will probably sequentially come from this set. Now they have Ford, MERCEDES, ferrari and McLaren. Since the first two is not coooool enough, and ferrari already have many set. I think McLaren maybe the next. If Lego PUSH OUT Lamborghini in next year speed champion. I will change my mind to this.

The new Chiron 'wave gear selector' allows for a very small 2-speed gearbox that only requires one 'axle level'. Previously, the red selector always had to be horizontal with its axle sticking vertical, or placed vertical with an axle 3 studs higher. The gear selector axle is now in the same direction ánd plane as the drive axles, which saves an enormous lot of space for cramped designs. I wouldn't be surprised to se the new selector in every new set that uses clutches. 

Plus, with two changeovers placed 90º apart from the wave selector like on the Chiron, we can have a 4-speed gearbox without needing the lever to move in 2 dimensions.

In fact the Bugatti has such a 4-speed gearbox. The 8-speed gearbox is built up from a 4-speed gearbox and a low-high gearbox.

Does new 20z clutch gear work with old 2L driving ring? Anyone know? Any idea?

The internals of the 20 clutch gear are very much like the internals of the new (red) 16t clutch gear.

Probably not.

The old 2L driving ring was 2 studs long and its displacement was 0.5 stud. This reuired a 0.5 stud deep rim inside the 16t gears. This was possible, because the old dark-gray 16t gears were one-sided.

The red 16t is two-sided, so the groove is less than 0,5 stud deep, so the driving ring cannot wholly fit in. The reason the new 3L driving ring works, is because it's slightly shorter than 3 studs.

As the new blue 20t is also two-sided, it has the same properties, and therefore I think won't work with the old driving ring.

(I have seen the model in Billund, but I haven't participated in the building session we had. I like to build it myself)

Most likely it's a box full of 2x4 bricks, like TLG sometimes sends.

I'm sure you care, so I finally decided to let this set go. I think it's a pretty good B-model material, but I won't have time for that anyway and the main model isn't appealing enough to judge its price.

When you build it, please be sure to align the orange gear selectors and the 2l lever with towball (the low-high switch) as in one of these examples. Otherwise you might end up with a wrong sequence, like for instance in the Zusammengebaut review.

Thanks! I happened to see your post, but I haven't read everything carefully.

So does the cylindrical cam shifter not have any identifying mark, like an arrow moulded anywhere, so that the instructions could show, this one goes with the arrow pointing up, this one goes with the arrow pointing left for example?

Also, we know that by rotating it through 90 degrees it will move the drive ring from engaged to disengaged. Could someone test what is the minimum angle of rotation does it take to disengage a drive ring? For example if it can disengage a drive ring with only 60 degrees of rotation then we could also use it in 6 positions.

Well, one of the sharpest (German) LEGO critics is not amused by the Chiron :D

aaaa lot. But the most important points are: Way too expensive (he calls it a huge marketing gag):

- way too high ct/price
- stickers instead of prints for this enormous price
- he already announced that he will sell it in his store for 300€ instead of 370€ German RRP

and not really a technic model due to very few functions, and no real accessibility to the few functions once built. Then of course he goes into detail of all the mechanical/technic problems that have also already been discussed here (you can see by watching without sound even).

If you notice the view numbers on his videos, it becomes obvious that he has quite some influence onto a lot of German AFOLs (big market for TLG), from the comments and up/downvote ratios you can see that people heavily agree with him (not only in this particular video but in general).

In brief: He says the Chriron is not technic at all because at the end nothing of the technical gems is visible and also hardly useable - the focus of a technic set should be the visible and enjoyable technic... In addition he complains about things have been done wrong (e.g. a W16 which is in fact a V8 plus 2 4R engines) and he suggest, if lego can do technic not correct then they should pass ... he suggest the chiron should have been released as a Model team (creator expert nowadays) which could resemble the forms much better...

His main critic is the prize - the thing is way overpriced - he says: After July, when the set has been arrived in his shop, he will offer it for about 300€...

Well, i admit in some aspects i agree with him buf of course i agree NOT with the "it is not technic" - this monster IS Technic but it is a technic for just displaying and not for using and watching it - and this is not the technic in the sense of the technic line as it was born in the late seventies...

My overall opinion: The model out of the box is only meant for being displayed because you can really nothing do with it (unaccessible and therefore unusable steering, not working front suspension, completely hidden gearbox also with a very hard accessible paddle-shifter) and you can also nothing demonstrate with it. BUT: The model has very good genes and could be evolved probably into a very good model but this needs some MODs....

Of course you can see the technic in the Arocs, at least a lot of them, same for the Unimog... but for me the hiding is ok but what is not ok, that the technic is actually not useable in some main usage-aspects of a car: steering and suspension - and gear switching is at least very hard accessible...

Anyway: For me is the same as with the Porsche: Great model, but not out of the box.

I still dont understand certain issues people have with a car. It's a car. What "extra" functions can you even put? A few I agree with:

Steering Geometry

Proper suspension ( this one bothers me the most, not impressed because there are better solutions to this)

Front end has a bit too many gaps that could be addressed

 

At the end of the day Lego defines Technic, not the people. It might not be what was coming out years ago, but there's still new things. The argument for the W16 is one of the most annoying to me. It's painfully obvious that a W16 with 1 crankshaft with what's available is impossible, let alone possible legally build wise. Why would lego create a mold for 1 W16 solely? That's a terrible financial decision. TLG is out to make money just like any other company. They're not different. 

 

 And given that it's still 10ct per piece does it not fall in line with literally everything else that was released? I think the Euro price is a little high but saying way over priced is a stretch. Of course it's marketing? What part about it is a gag? It's not like it was bait and switched. They announced a license with Bugatti, and released a Bugatti car. Of course there will be an extra cost. Exact same thing with anything else licensed, look at Star Wars for example.
