Hi guys, im just basically starting out with moc trains, and am confused when people talk about "Wheelbase Design". can someone explain what that is to me?

I built most of my first train moc yesterday and on friday, but need to order some pieces for the fine detail. this is a MOC EMD SW1500, I nicknamed it "The Red Train".unknown.pngunknown.png

@LegoBrick1 Good first build, I'm sure it's better than mine was. However, I don't think this is the right topic for this . Perhaps a friendly MOD would place it into it's own topic, where you can get some more direct feedback?
I'm also not entirely sure what your question is about wheelbase design. What do you want to know? Maybe ask a question in the Train Tech general help topic: https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/76047-train-tech-help-general-questions-talk-to-the-staff/.
(I don't blame you for not finding that one, it was buried 4 pages back... maybe it should be pinned?)

Back-to-topic: I'm not sure who's inspired me most. Anyone who's built a British-outline locomotive or rolling stock has stuck, as that's what I search for mostly. Ultimately though, anyone posting anything in this sub-forum becomes an inspiration. I'll see a new idea for a particular build, style or technique, and subconsciously remember and use it later. There's certainly a range, and that's why I'm here.

This is already a great topic, as I don't think I knew about Wes Turngrate's excellent BR locos before. I'll have to have a proper look through later.

It is really difficult to explain who-what inspires me - I think there are a lot of things and people -so it is quite hard to list them all.

All Lego builders MOCs contain an idea, a solution to a problem, an approach which can be adopted...or  a complete new way to see things. So I simply look around ... and keep track of what I like (cars, trains, buildings...)

What I particularly like (some of you already know this) is:

  • To build "in style" - trying to imitate 60s/70s and 80s way to build.
  • Technic sets from 80s - and in general the mixture of train and Technic worlds
  • Narrow gauge railways from any part of the world (from Swiss metric ones to Decauville) - more specifically railways which have nature as main background.
  • Italian/German/English/French rolling stock from steam era to mid-80s. I do not like modern high-speed trains at all - I'd choose a diesel railcar instead.
  • Tin and wooden toys (pre and post-war)
  • Garden Trains in G-gauge
  • Other Rail-based vehicles, like trams, cable cars...

So I always search for these creations around Lego forums and galleries

Ciao!

French Station by italovergnat

Man, every time I see his stuff, it's just an explosion for the eyes! Funny, come to think of it, I don't believe I've ever saw this one submission of his before. Kinda a nice concept for a modular train station.

There are many incredible builders out there and I continue to steel borrow great ideas from many of them. But the one builder who pretty much sucked me in to this hobby is James Mathis with his designs for the Santa Fe cars. Rumor has it that the trains in Jake McKee's book also originated from James, in any event, Jake was also influential in pulling me in to the hobby by providing examples of the freight counterpart to the passenger cars.

@Murdoch17 Inspired me too. His Yellow Bi-Polar inspired me, I built it, then modded it, and that then inspired me to branch out and start my own MOC'ing

that also got me started using and understanding LDD
