Posted March 28, 20186 yr Quinnsville Cocoa Plantation QV3.5 by LM71Blackbird, on Flickr After safely arriving in Quinnsville via the Cocovia Wagon Way, Richard and Nathaniel Brickford set about going straight to work. While Richard went off to see about a place to stay until a proper house could be built, Nathaniel went off for a walk to stretch his legs after the sitting for so long. He ended up following his nose to a cocoa plantation on the outskirts of the settlement. He found the manager of the plantation and promptly asked for a tour of the area. He wrote down his findings in his notes and composed his first letter to Captain Cooke on Quinnsville. QV3.2 by LM71Blackbird, on Flickr Dear Captain Jno. Cooke, RN, The state of Quinnsville is better off then originally perceived. While it has not seen very much growth since the retirement and sudden disappearance of Sir Smaugton, the settlement is operating business as usual. Just today I had the chance to tour one of the many cocoa plantations spread throughout the settlement. While the techniques that they use are still rather primitive, they effectively harvest vast amounts of raw cocoa each day. On a whole, I believe the entire settlement will be similar in the lack of modern conveniences, but that should be a relatively easy fix, given time and some dedicated care. I will begin the inspection of the fortifications and the troops before the week is out. Hopefully the lack of proper leadership has not made them relax in their regular duties and drills. In service to her Majesty, Captain Nathaniel Brickford, Military Attaché to Quinnsville QV3.3 by LM71Blackbird, on Flickr Here is a close up of the tree for those interested. This whole build was inspired (and basically copied ) from @Ayrlego's cocoa plantation. I also reversed engineered the tree from his design. C&C are both welcome and apprecieated! Thanks for checking it out! Edited March 29, 20186 yr by LM71Blackbird
March 28, 20186 yr Cocoa on Cocovia? Heresy! Nice build there! The overall scene is properly "busy", and I like all the details you added in terms of harvesting the cocoa. That cocoa tree build is lovely! The story around the build is great too, I really like how you are picking up the loose ends of Quinnsville and start to develop them, not only here but in all your recent MOCs. It already feels like Quinnsville is "back on track" again, well done!

I going to try my best to re-invigorate Quinnsville. I've already got some builds on standby, so in the coming weeks and months, expect lots of developments in the settlement!
March 28, 20186 yr A really great plantation BB, especially the tree, which is a definite improvement over the original version. I especially like how you solved the problem of getting the fruit to attach to the trunk - it is perhaps a little bulky, but I don't really see any way it could be improved! Well done!

Thanks Ayrlego! There's no bluetack in LDD (), so it took little bit of thinking to get the pods attached just right, I'm glad that you like it!
March 28, 20186 yr Nicely done, mate, an a very good plantation, and I'm glad to see the famous cocoa trees on Cocovia getting some more love! Also, I don't know what you did to the green in those renders there, but it sure looks fabulous with that reflection bouncing off - gives it a sort of swampy/junglish vibe that works really well!

Thank you very much! Well, I'm not quite sure what I did either, but I'm glad it turned out good!
March 29, 20186 yr Nice build Blackbird, the foliage is well done, and the trees are very nice. However, there's a lot of blank space though. In fact, one of your renders cuts out some of this blank space. I worry that too much of your build is simply studs, which is technically cheating the EGS system. I think leadership should review this.

I think leadership should review this. Thank you! Yes, there is some blank space around the edges. I'm in no way trying to cheat the EGS (I didn't even realize that was a thing). The reason for that is I messed up when I licensed the property as a large plantation. It's not the first time the plantation sizes have thrown me for a loop! Drunknok, was kind enough to point out my mistake though. The only way I figured to make it right was to enlarge the base. I would have filled it out completely with foliage, but LDD started spasing out on me with all the dark green. I can attempt to add more if it's going to be a problem, but I really don't want to mess up the LXF file...
March 29, 20186 yr I really like the design for the cocoa trees. I'm not sure how stable they would be in real life, but it works well for LDD. The rest of the vegetation is good and has a nice variety, and I like the inclusion of the work tables and wooden canopy. I'm not a big fan of the massive dark green baseplate. It makes the area look more like a swamp than a jungle. Adding more vegetation or limiting the baseplate to the parts developed would help avoid this.

The original desgin came from Ayrlego, and he built them with real bricks, so i think they would be reasonablely stable. The vegetation was pretty tiresome to do... I'm glad that you like it! Yeah, I can your point on the baseplates. Would a dark brown be a better choice for a jungle floor?
March 29, 20186 yr This build went from "great and detailed 64x64 build" to "that same build tacked on a 80x80 base" to "expanded build using most of the 80x80 area" in a matter of hours - quite impressive in my opinion. By now it looks like a "proper" large plantation, well done! The "swampy feel" is pretty nice for a plantation in the jungles in my opinion. If you keep modifying the build, I would add some more foliage and smaller plants near the edges, and maybe some colourful animals (frogs maybe?) here and there.
March 29, 20186 yr wow, nice build! on the station I commented on the lack of greenery but you made up for that here! I like the tree design. and the use of different foillage trough out the place.

Well, I paid the 100 Dbs, so I figured the least I could do is make it the proper size! Mesabi mentioned that the second build was technically cheating, so I couldn't just leave it that. But now I'm pretty proud of the build and I think it turned out better than I originally hoped it would! 7 hours ago, Bart said: wow, nice build! on the station I commented on the lack of greenery but you made up for that here! This was actually my first time designing a jungle-like scene, so i'm glad that it turned out so well!
