MOC - Modular based on Corner Deli 31050

Hi all,

So I decided to buy 3 Corner Deli set's, and turn them into a modular building. It was built using this 3 set's, plus some parts from my very limited parts collection. Hope you guys enjoy, it was a fun build for me! And yes, it's not a "Corner" Deli anymore...

It was my first adventure in the "Moc" world, and my very first modular.

This looks great  I especially like the interior with the red and white tiled floor and the table and seats look pretty similar to the one inside Downtown Diner. Good work!

I've always hated this set, for a couple of reasons: I think it'd look better with the blue on the bottom (painted) and the orange on top (exposed bricks). I despise the lack of continuity though the set with it's heavy upper window dressing, which is not consistent over the rest of the building, or even on the same floor. The ground floor, at the same height in bricks as the upper floor, makes it look top heavy.

 

But having said that, I think you've made the most out of the resources at hand. The interior you've made is lovely and exudes character the set never had, and you've balanced the elements well. The size you've made it is great, it fits into the modular street scene well.

 

As for improvements, I feel the window decoration on the upper floor is just too much for such a small building. It would look more suitable if the building was similarly framed in grey (along the edges of the building) to match. The sheer perceived weight of the window and walls on the second floor looks too heavy for the extensively glassed ground floor to take and ends up looking top heavy. Again, like the set, the rear the door to the balcony is unadorned making it look odd against the neighbouring windows.

 

All in all I think you've done a great job with the building but feel the starting point can lead people astray when trying to convert it into something more modular in size while trying to be relatively faithful to the flawed design of the set.

I was not a fan of the original set either, but I really appreciate your work. In particular I like the ground level, which is very detailed, but at the same time it seems the minifigures have enough space to move around. 

In my opinion, mainly because of its colour scheme, I think it would look great next to the Detective's office (10246), even though it looks more modern.

Nice work! I have wanted to turn this set into a modular also. I liked the concept and overall look. I think the execution out of the box was a let down IMO. I like the details and how you can still tell what it was based off of. You've given me some inspiration to get back to modding this set.

Thank you all for the feedback. This was my first "original" creation since I came from the dark age. I have modded some set's, but only small things, with this one, took me months of trial and error, and to gather the parts. For now it will sit like this, but maybe in the future, I will separate the "dinner" from the upper floor, and also add another floor to the building.
