Hi everyone,

i was thinking about buying the Bugatti Chiron and was wondering whether I could motorize it to move around. Would 2 XL motors be enough, is there space for them, could I run them through the gearbox? Could I remove the engine to make space for the motors? If you all know anything about motorizing this wonderful model please post here.

You can definitely motorise it, it’s just a question of how much do you want to modify? RacingBrick already made one RC mod with a BuWizz, which left the gearbox in tact but wasn’t used to change the speed. 

I’d follow the 42083 Mods and improvements topic. You’ll definitely see some popping up at some point.

I was thinking about doing it with all stock Lego parts and the power functions system, is that possible?

The performance with BuWizz is already not great, so with stock LEGO parts it will be even harder to make it perform acceptably. You will have to remove the gearbox, but even then the model will still be heavy.

My problem with BuWizz is the price. Already buying the set is a large investment. I already have a set of PF stuff in case I want to make a moc or mod a set

If you are going to invest a lot of money in the Bugatti just to motorize it, I'd say: spend it on other sets and build yourself a great motorized moc from rebrickable.com or build one yourself. In the end the Bugatti is a display model, motorized or not motorized. But it's your choice of course.

If you are still determined to motorize the Bugatti, I would say: use 4L motors, each driving a single wheel. So skip the diffs and use minimal gearing. I think a 1:1 gear ratio between motor and wheel should give just enough torque. Use a separate m-motor to drive the engine.

Completely agree, this model is simply too big and heavy for a proper motorization with PF parts only. What @Didumos69 described is probably the most straightforward method and the performance still won't be that great. You also have to ask yourself the question - what's your point of making it RC? The car is huge, turning circle is huge, it's a pain to drive it around in the house. I'd go with a smaller model if you want some fun RC stuff.

Guys, I did it. I have been holding it off for a while. 2 XL motors, one PF battery box, I just got it to go forward. Its still quite the prototype, but it works. I will get some steering in and post something probably in the next month. Look forward to it. Sadly, I had to remove the engine to make room for a differential for the 2 motors. It's a complex process that connects to the back of the drivetrain. Kinda trial and error'd it. Ill take some pictures as well. Good day to you all!
