Since you didn't mention it in your post, I should point out that the new symbols on the ninja's hoods are just the first letter of each of their names in the cipher-based Ninjagon language introduced in The LEGO Ninjago Movie (specifically the "King" font from this sheet). So on a conceptual level it's definitely a step up in consistency than their hoods from the movie, which sometimes used the first letter/letters of their name, sometimes the first letter of their element, and sometimes something else entirely.

Oh, didn't notice that! I haven't learned the Ninjago alphabet by heart (..yet?). So the consistency is in part just coincidental.

Interesting; I wonder if he (or she) uses a flame whip. It would be cool to see a team of antagonists that mirror the ninja’s elements.

Certainly! Ninja vs elemental masters/imposters would be great to see. Team vs team would be a fresh change from team vs army.

The new hat design was created for The LEGO Ninjago Movie. If I had to guess, it was just to offer more variety, since a lot of figures in the movie sets (civilians and major characters like Wu and Garmadon alike) wear one hat or the other, and it would feel extremely repetitive if that many characters had to share just ONE hat design.

I mean I don't hate the new hat, I just think it's weird there are two pieces that are so identical. Usuallt this only happens to save plasic, but this really uses as much if not more.

I’ve heard that the next wave will be villain fighting villain fighting the ninja. The story will be super interesting if this is the case. I wonder how Zane and Kai will play into the story if there is a ice vs. fire theme. There’s this rumour that Zane will become an Ice Emperor, will Kai become a Fire King?

I'm hesitant to have any opinions until there are pictures, So far we know there's going to be a kitsume(Fox) animal. And it looked fire related...

"So identical" is kind of subjective. It kind of calls to mind a comment LEGO Friends designer Fenella Holden made about the development process and some of the difficulties getting designers accustomed to boy-targeted products to appreciate the needs of girl-targeted ones (as cited in this article): "It was an education. No one could understand, why do we need more than one handbag? So I’d have to say, well, is one sword enough for the knights, or is it better to have a dagger, too? And then they’d come around."

Even when dealing with less gender-coded subject matter, it can be VERY easy to generalize stuff as similar or redundant when we don't have enough firsthand experience to appreciate the real-life nuances of it. In real life, Japanese conical hats come in numerous shapes, styles, and materials, some of which you can see examples of in this post from somebody who had similar questions about the differences between these two hats, or this category on Wikimedia Commons.

Plus, there have been plenty of other minifig headgear pieces which have coexisted with similar types of headgear with only relatively subtle stylistic differences:

Pyro Lasher?

Could be like Whiparella from Nexo Knights.

If there’s actually a contingent of Pyro Snake antagonists, I’d love for some of them to have the           lava/serpentine torso she had.

I’d also welcome molded (not brick-built) snake steeds with open arms. The brick-built dragons from the Dragon Hunter line are far superior to the ones from the first series, but still really lust for proper old school mounts in Ninjago.

Thanks for bringing gender into a non-gender argument I just don't want them to replace the old one with this new one, which Lego usually does.

Probably not, It's pushing for Chima, but Nexo Knights isn't probably in there.

Doesn't the new golden dragon have a molded head? I don't know why people hate molded things

I'm no expert, but I believe this is what it boils down to:

In the 'regular' LEGO building system, moulds may get updated to improve stability and/or reduce plastic (in other words: increase efficiency), and completely new ones are designed only when no existing part will do the trick in a certain design situation.

However, the 'minifigure system' (which plays a huge role in action, adventure and licensed themes) and the CCBS system, are driven by innovation and production of new moulds.

Variations on a common theme generate collectability. This applies to anything from hair pieces, torso designs, cloth pieces, armour, weaponry, utensils, moulded animals... and the list goes on.

@Aanchir wasn't raising a point about gender, but about people having different perspectives and different tastes of what they like to collect or build.

The moulded vs brick-built debate is an excellent example of how some people like to collect animals (quite high accuracy and style consistency, low build value), and others who like to build animals (high build value, low accuracy and/or consistency).

I like fully molded (poseable) mounts/beasts/etc. As @Exetrius pointed out, they tie more into the “play” aspect for me. I like the newer brick-built ones as opposed to the older molded head/brick-built body from an aesthetic standpoint, but I do wish Ninjago had more animals like the classic horses, dragons or the JP dinosaurs.

Yeah, it is sometimes a bit surprising how few molded animals (even smaller ones) show up in Ninjago besides stuff like fish, chickens, snakes, and spiders. There was the dog in the Master Wu Dragon set, and Monkey Wretch in the Skybound sets, but I don't think there have been ANY dogs, cats, horses, etc. in Ninjago sets so far. Maybe the designers avoid those sorts of animals because they're afraid their more "everyday" feel might dilute the theme's sense of otherworldly excitement, compared to scarier wild creatures like snakes/spiders or mythical creatures like dragons?

It could be neat some day if Ninjago were to have a plotline involving physical or spirit versions of the animals that the ninja had as their classic emblems (Kai's lion emblem, Zane's wolf emblem, Cole's gorilla emblem, Jay's octopus emblem, Lloyd's dragon emblem, and Nya's crane emblem). I thought about this early on in the theme's lifespan but after Legends of Chima launched I figured LEGO would probably want to avoid that so it doesn't feel derivative/redundant. But by now it's been four years since Legends of Chima ended, and both LEGO Elves and LEGO Bionicle have been able to make a story arc involving supernatural animal companions work without feeling like a Chima knock-off in the intervening time, so I think the Ninjago theme might be able to make a similar plotline work as well. It could be an interesting change of pace from the typical emphasis on snakes and dragons.

That does sound interesting, but there's a weird thing. the kitsume we saw in the photo was involved with Lloyd and had fire markings, not exactly Zane's spirit animal anymore

That does sound neat indeed. I quite like the spirit animal idea.

There was a point where I was wishing that the all the TLNM vehicles are all animal based or themed. Or at least have an animal-like head. For example, like Cole's Mech having a gorilla head since its body as gorilla shaped. I don't know. Since the Ninjas called their vehicle mechs, might as well looks more the part?

That’s an interesting idea! I wonder why they never expanded on those emblems. Maybe because it felt too random in the early days; or as you mentioned, perhaps they felt it was too redundant with Chima.

There's a rough drawing of the Emperor's Castle on Instagram.

My guess as to why the ninja never had animal mechs is because it would be to much like Power Rangers.

More drawings are on Instagram, according to the drawings the the land Bounty has wheels, the wolf comes in the smallest set and is a werewolf/Kitsune who changes into a human and Antonia is in this season.

These are all rumors from Instagram.

There's no way they'd make a character based on an actual person a character's girlfriend right..? I hope the "Antonia is Lloyd's girlfriend" part is just the source's assumption.

It would be nice to see that.
