Great review as always.

But why haven't they used 4L axles for the outriggers? I think it looks unfinished.

TLG has stopped doing that. They always (mostly) use an extra 1L divided over two sides.

It does look pretty awful but I guess they did it so the average numbskull wouldn't knock the 4L half-beams off at the slightest sneeze and then go on the internet and complain about the model's fragility.

I actually thought of that, but then again - seriously? *oh2*

Then why not add an extra pair of black 1x4 beams? It's 4000 parts anyway, an extra 8 beams shouldn't hurt.

Then the numbskull will knock out that outermost beam too.

I know pf controls the crane. Is it possible to add an ir receiver and steer/drive the wheels like a remote control car?

You’d need to add two more motors to steer and drive the wheels, as well as a separate battery box so that it doesn’t tangle up in the turntable, but sure I don’t see why not :)

as a "First PF technic experience" would it be better to get this, or the 42070 from last year?

This one!

(better model altogether)

Started to build from what I own, ordered missing parts.

I enjoying build very much. Last thing I enjoyed so much, was Arocs (i have built BWE, Porsche etc.)

When I started to build, realised, that I didn't needed to order

as they are mainly used as axle extenders, and I can replace them with

what I did already in two places.

Maybe in this set white ones are used, because there is so much other parts in red. So, for easyer building, clerer building instructions, they used those white parts.

They could use the smooth connector in LBG. Anyway, speaking realistically, it's possible that TLG has a surplus of the white connectors so they're using them up here. Would make sense, since the slump in 2017 was partially down to excess inventory.

I was wondering the same thing earlier... and there were areas where the red ones would have looked better, i.e.:

Overall, the whole crane looks a bit unfinished. Which I find a bit weird, because Olav Kroigaard also designed the Claas, which was (is) arguably one of the best looking models of LEGO Technic ever.

*co-designed

Fair enough. :classic:

But Olav also did 42053 Volvo excavator, which is again considered a highly detailed, accurate model. Maybe they (the Claas and Volvo) just look better because they have to represent the real life vehicle?

To be fair, he made the tractor part, which is one of the best looking subsets ever.

How do you know he did the tractor part? I don't recall having come across that in any designer video.
