agnes2003 Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Please forgive me, I am new here and I don't know if I've put this in the right section. Also, I'm ashamed to admit, I'm not a huge lego fan (although I did like to tinker a bit in my youth and good fun it was too). All that said I am writing to ask some advice and hope you can help me..... ...there is a 4 foot high green lego dragon for sale on ebay. One which has come from shop (ex display model I think). I have been looking for something special like this for my other half (who is a lego fan). Trouble is it has a start price of £250. This is a bit steep for me but I could manage it (If I remember how much i love him!), so my questions are: 1. is that a reasonable price to pay for a 4 foot lego dragon made by lego? 2. is it likely the price will rise (don't want to get my hopes up if the thing is worth hundreds). Hopefully you will all come back and say that's a ridiculous price to pay and I can get it for lots less :-D Looking forward to your insight as I haven't got a clue! Many thanks Agnes Quote
legotrainfan Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Hi and welcome! Maybe you could introduce yourself in the "Hello! My name is..." thread in the "eurobricks community" forum. I'm not an expert on such matters but I think for those who are experts it would probably be helpful if they had a link to that eBay auction. Estimating the dragon's price is easier with a picture. Athos Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 So 250 GBP would be about 500 USD. Figuring an average price per piece of .10 USD, it would need to be about 5,000 pieces. Which, if it is 4 ft. tall, would seem reasonable deal. Plus you've got the exclusivity factor, especially if it was designed by a Lego official builder. Though I bet shipping would be a killer... I'd have to guess the price would rise a lot, so I wouldn't get my hopes too far up. Hopefully you will all come back and say that's a ridiculous price to pay and I can get it for lots less :-D I'm not going to say that. I'd guess that if you miss it now, you'll not be able to get it at any (reasonable) price, as it is likely one-of-a-kind. At the same time, as a Lego fan, I think I'd be happier if my wife put the expenditure into several other sets for me. Though collectors appeal and the significant sentimental value in having such a cool gift from my wife, may outweigh that consideration. Got a link? I'd like to see the beast. Steve, who probably wasn't much help... Quote
Jipay Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Could you provide us with a link on the said auction ? That would be helpfull for us to see. If the model is "OLI", the legoland mascote, then it is an official sculpture and has been discontinued for some time now so the price seems normal. Quote
agnes2003 Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 OOo thank you all ever so much. Athos you ahve got me thinking about the possibility of buying several other sets instead but then I do rather like the idea of this dragon. Novelty factor if you like and he does like big things. legotrainfan, I will go and introduce myself shortly in the welcome section. how rude of me not to. Oh I really want it now .... here's the link, I hope: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:IT&ih=003 The other plus point is it's not too far from me geographically speaking, so I could pick it up but goodness knows if it would fit OK in the car but then I'll work that one out if it comes to it. Good and bad that you all think it is reasonably priced. One other question....How do I know it's genuine by the way? Thank you all everso much, I do appreciate it. Agnes Quote
der seb Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 In fact that it is a model for display made by Lego itself, I guess it is glued. I wouldn't pay 300 Euro for a glued model Quote
Athos Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Collection Only 10 Miles West Of Salisbury Or Send Your Own Courier I wonder why he'll only go west of Salisbury. Is East-Salisbury really that bad? *wacko* Steve Quote
Faramir Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 In fact that it is a model for display made by Lego itself, I guess it is glued. I wouldn't pay 300 Euro for a glued model I agree. I'm pretty sure that it is glued. Lots of times I see those outside big lego-selling stores and I know that they are glued together. (Not that I try and swipe... pieces... or anything... >:-) :-$ .) agnes2003 Posted March 27, 2008 Author Posted March 27, 2008 I have slept on it and am thinking now that the dragon, as gorgeous as he/she is, may be a lot of money for me to pay. I fear it may go for more money than I want to pay and don't want to be disappointed. So I may instead go for a huge lego brick I've seen, for the novelty factor, as it is a much lower price and perhaps buy him a set or two to go with it instead. Thank you everso much everyone for your help on this. I do appreciate it. I hope you won't mind me picking your brains another time on all things lego if I need too? Best Agnes Quote
Dragonator Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Lego dragon? Gimme gimme gimme! :-$ That does seem to be an expensive price, and I seem to recall that quite often the main structure of these is made of Duplo bricks that are glued. Still, it is a great model of a classic dragon. *wub* Quote
Landlubber Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Looks to me like the whole thing is Duplo, apart from the eyes. This will probably stop the real serious collectors from buying, and 250 quid seems a bit much. Maybe wait and if the auction ends with no bids then send an offer to the buyer of 125pounds. If you're the only person close by that shows interest then you might get lucky. Quote

No offence DUPLO fans out there, if any of you actually exist and can use a keyboard. Just kidding ;) Quote
