Just commenting that if they are adding $60 from the leaked price, they should compensate with additional mini figs from the leaked amount (I think 12 was the leak). We are almost at a Rivendell price, I don't see why we shouldn't get a comparable amount of minifigs. The price per piece is comparable, Rivendell had 21 minifigs, I would think that for something priced that high we should have a comparable amount (15-20 seems fair). (Also worth noting Avengers tower had 31, and Gringots had 13 plus an additional gwp minifig). Gringots being $30 cheaper. I am good if a few of them are statues like Rivendell. Also agreed, the build needs to be improved as well. $500 was a lot of Rivendell but it was an excellent set (great build) with great minifigs, I would expect excellence at $400, but adding $60 should make it that much better. As of now, the only rumored figures for Barad-Dûr are Sauron, Sam, Frodo, and an unknown number of Orcs. Also, Rivendell had 15 figures, not counting statues. I don’t think statues really count since they aren’t characters Edited December 31, 2023 by Balrogofmorgoth Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 Personally, I‘d be satisfied with just Sauron, Sam, Frodo, and a bunch of orcs. What else could we realistically expect? Gollum perhaps, but they didn‘t bring back the old moulds for Rivendell, so he’d require two new pieces (unless they pull a goat and recreate them perfectly). The Witch King and fell beasts would not be entirely out of place, but they’d certainly be saved for a Minas Tirith set (if we ever get there). Quote

mirkwoodspiders Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 I know so little about the layout of Barad-Dur it's hard to have expectations. The leaked pic was pretty blurred and onIy really gave a general shape. I'm envisioning something like Orthanc, but I don't know what they'd fill the interior with. I guess they have the room where Sam rescues Frodo, probably some dungeons, but I'm not sure what else. I'm most curious as to how they pull off the Great Eye... maybe it'll have a light up function?! I think I'll be satisfied if LOTR only gets these giant, iconic sets, but man would some cheaper system-scale sets be neat too. Quote

The leak was a survey, that had a price range - and 460 is still within that range. 4 hours ago, Lordhelmet said: The price per piece is comparable, Rivendell had 21 minifigs, I would think that for something priced that high we should have a comparable amount (15-20 seems fair). We will have to wait for pictures, but I would kinda guess, that there would be more bigger pieces used for Barad-Dûr than they did for Rivendell. Not going to say we won´t see many small pieces for details there, but there should also be a bigger number of big pieces to build the tower. Also, you can´t really count a gwp minifig towards a set - I mean, first of all when you buy the set now you don´t get the gwp - and you got it to other sets than gringotts anyways ;). (Not to mention you can use Rivendell or Barad-Dûr to get GWPs with minifigs also - ofc very likely not Lord of the RIng ones) Quote

We don’t know much about the interior of Barad-Dûr. But we know there’s a torture chamber (where Gollum was tortured), and we know there’s a room with a Palantir. I think it’s also safe to assume there’s a throne room and a dungeon. And they can always just throw in Easter eggs for the rest (and they probably won’t make a torture chamber) Quote

Anyway, I'd fully expect a Palantir room and a throne room thrown into the mix, however I could see someone deciding that would be too close to the way Orthanc was set up (even if it would make sense). And while it is true the rescue was at Cirith Ungol, we could easily see them pulling the same stunt they did with the Avengers Tower, where they included Loki's prison cell, though that was nowhere near the building. I'd love it if we get a bunch of Nazgul minifigs in the set, but I also doubt they'd want to include the full Nine - unlike the Fellowship those aren't varied enough for it. I'd also love a set of characters from the Last Alliance (Isildur, Elendil, Anarion and Gil-Galad, maybe throw in Elrond), but I guess a bunch of random, nameless Orcs would be easier and cheaper to make... And something I'd find hilarious and great would be them reusing the Lighthouse setup, so the Eye can truly search for the Ring. But I doubt that would be a thing. Quote

And yeah, as dark as it is I could see them including a torture chamber in an 18+ set. Everything you're describing sounds almost identical to Orthanc, though. Not that it'd deter me, but I wonder if they'll dig deeper into the source material to make the interior fairly distinct from Orthanc. Quote

I'm just recalling the armies that (didn't) feature in the Battle of Five Armies set! Goblins 3, Wolves 0. Elves 1, Men 1, Dwarves 2. Even if you count Eagles, it doesn't do much for the average army size. Quote

I agree. I guess if you're well-versed in LOTR lore and know the books backwards and forwards you might balk at relocating certain details, but the average fan probably wouldn't mind seeing some details from Cirith Ungol transported to Barad-Dur. I just don't see them doing Cirith Ungol at all... maybe in a playset if they ever get back to those, but probably not. Quote
RichardGoring Posted January 3, 2024 Posted January 3, 2024 I really enjoy Lord of the Rings, and have watched the movies a number of times, but not for a while. So, probably slightly on the more educated side of a casual fan. Currently building Rivendell and we're watching the movies while doing so. I thought that both the Frodo rescue, and the Black Gate were in/near Barad-dur. It's obvious when you think about it, but it's very plausible for scenes from those locations to appear in a Barad-dur set, and would give them a bunch more detail to be able to add into the set. Or they could include the preparation for the battle at Minas Tirith, as a way to include side builds and figures/characters, although it's a much bigger stretch and scaling would be odd. Quote
kuzyabricks Posted January 3, 2024 Posted January 3, 2024 I've been inspecting the leaked baradur image recently and haven't been able to identify a single minifigure lol Quote

Cirith Ungol (where Sam rescues Frodo) is very near Minas Morgul (the home of the Witch King), which is @50km from Minas Tirith. Barad-Dur is 45km further east of Mount Doom, 160km from the Black Gate, and probably a similar distance from Cirith Ungol. . Having said that, I wouldn't put it past TLG to put anything Mordor-related inside the tower, and wouldn't mind either. Quote

Oh yes, I realize, and it's obvious even when you watch the films and think about it for a second or two. But, having not seen them for a while, I could very easily believe that a lot of those things happened really near each other, or even in the same place, so it would be fairly easy for LEGO to add those scenes into Barad-Dur.
