Part of the appeal is being able to play out the seige in some form, and you can't do that without the walls. Plenty of room in the base of the citadel for a couple interior spaces, even if they don't make perfect sense 'geographically'. For me question #1 will always be does it 'play well' ;) Quote
Lordhelmet Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 I think Rivendell is a great set and fairly priced (based on other Lego set prices). It has a few minor issues like Legolas hair, a few prints, but overall looks awesome and is a good way to welcome the theme back. for those frustrated about the price, I think it is fair to say we all would prefer having play sets or diorama sets that are more affordable. While I think big sets like this have their place and make the overall theme better, having lower cost sets with minifigs is something that is needed (just having UCS level sets would be a disappointment for everyone including those who will buy this day one and love the set). I don’t think the price makes the set bad or disappointing, I think it is just disappointing that we do not have lower costs sets rumored or confirmed making Legos strategy disappointing. It would help if there were some leaks about play sets later this year or a few dioramas which there are many opportunities to do within the IP. I do think these will happen eventually and the new weapons, dual molded elf hair, are all signs to me that we could see more sets. If it takes a massive set to get the ball rolling on other ones I am ok with that would just prefer that we had more information on play sets and dioramas now to lesson the blow of just one $500 entry point. ideally we start to see 3-7 play sets and dioramas each year, and one big set for the key locations (Barad dur, edoras, minis tirith, lothlorien, helms deep, and maybe bag end). i keep seeing everyone say they could do minis tirith like this or this for 500, my biggest thought here is why would they cap it at $500? I wouldn’t be surprised to see an $800 price tag on a minis tirith set and Lego has significant precedent with sets that expensive (Star Wars, Eiffel Tower). Just a thought but sticker shock could be an issue for minis tirith down the road, and if people are mad about Rivendell pricing that could be even higher let alone the inflation rates over the next few years. Also worth noting as much as I don’t want a set that expensive it had better look incredible at that cost. Quote
neithan Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Truly a wonderful set! For 400€ with double VIP points, I might consider to buy, because there`s the threshold to not feel utterly overpriced. But 500€ for a set this size? No, in no universe. Yeah, it has over 6000 (small) pieces, but it just doesn`t look like a 500€-Set for me. But hey, it has the LotR branding and 15 (mostly desirable) Minifigs, so many people will buy it. I hope they have fun with it, I just can`t justify spending 500€ on a set like this - it gets even worse when I compare it to Ninjago City Gardens or Flower Fruit Mountain - a set which doesn`t look that much smaller but only costs 1/3 of Rivendell. And in my opinion looks equally good. Quote

Not really sure what you're trying to say about a technic structure? Oh, sorry. I meant that out of the areas you'd consider for a best set of all time (details, building techniques, minifigures, stuff like that) the only area it doesn't have is like a technic structure, as you'd see in large sets like the falcon or AT-AT. However, that's not a knock against the set, as it doesn't need a technic structure. Quote

The 2020 review one was better but similar flaws. It fails as a play type set as the buildings are too small for figures. The ballistas are twice the size of the great hall. The fellbeast is larger than the top level. It also fails as a display set since it doesn't really look like Minas Tirith. It tries to be both play and display and ends up failing at both. I'd prefer either a microscale set for the location with no trying to shoehorn in minifigs or decent sized buildings that are minifig scale without trying to represent the entire city. Do one thing well rather than two things badly. Quote

If the official sets hadn't just come back, I would be looking for a way to buy instructions for that one. I can understand that the mixture of scales doesn't work for everybody, but it doesn't matter to me. At some point scale breaks down in Lego no matter what, just because of the system. Quote

It doesn't matter if they run out of new stuff for HP, since the audience is constantly refreshed and it is still popular with young kids now just as it was in the past. It has been three years since the burrow. Give it another two years, and they can probably do it again. Repeat that with Hagrid's Hut, the Forbidden Forest, and just about every room in Hogwarts. Kids will continue to want them. It doesn't really matter if adults don't buy the 8-12 age range sets as kids do. Give it a few months and it wouldn't surprise me if Indy was bigger than LOTR for the 8-12 and 12-16 year old age brackets. I mean Harry Potter has the issue of being tied to bigotry, so its fandom is definitely not going to be continually growing, with a bunch of people who used to like it actively avoiding it. (And making sure their kids do the same) I’m definitely not saying they’re on the same playing field now, especially with younger people, but LOTR definitely has a much brighter long-term future than Harry Potter does. But that doesn’t have any effect on the short term popularity of Lego sets. On the topic of the arguments about how fewer kids are into LOTR, my question is, how many AFOLs don’t like playsets? Because the vast majority of us like Lego for the minifigures and love the playsets, since that’s what we grew up on and got us into Lego in the first place. Even if most of the people interested in sets are adults, I’m sure most of us would be very happy with playsets and they’d sell well anyways. Quote

I think there are two issues here: AFOLs are not the same thing as regular adults that 18+ set are also targeted at. They are intended to appeal to people who‘ve never touched a LEGO set before, in this case LOTR fans. The $500 ultimate “grown-up” Rivendell set might be more attractive to them than a $50 playset Wouldn’t the 2012-13 LOTR sets have been more successful if that was the case? Us AFOLs did buy them, after all, and it seemingly wasn’t enough for a third wave Edited February 8, 2023 by BrickBob Studpants Quote

Public opinion here wavers and has done so even in the last couple of weeks. And some people can separate art from the artist. But that is a different off-topic matter not for here. A lot of kids worldwide still read the books and even more watch the movies and go to theme parks. LEGO would be crazy to give up on that fan-base. 43 minutes ago, QuiggoldsPegLeg said: On the topic of the arguments about how fewer kids are into LOTR, my question is, how many AFOLs don’t like playsets? I like minifigure scale sets, but don't necessarily care too much for the play aspects. I'd take a decent looking minifigure based display set over a not so good looking minifigure based play set. I enjoyed the first rounds of playsets, although they were also decent display sets. But (large number of) other adults didn't buy into them. 52 minutes ago, BrickBob Studpants said: …the „fleshy“ discussion is still not dead yet? Guys, it‘s been almost 20 years. Who do you think we swap all those unwanted yellow heads and hands with in exchange for nice flesh tones. It was interesting to see that the latest batch of LOTR figures had lose a lot of the little neck area of skin print, so ideal for changing to yellow, just as recently more generic yellowskin characters have been easier to change to fleshie. On the topic of the leaked HP Advent Calendar figs, hopefully in the future we could get a calendar for LOTR. Obviously not this year, but I think a calendar set in the Shire or Rivendell could make for great minifigs and some really cozy builds. Quote

Obviously it takes time for things to change, and we’re only 3 years since stuff hit the fan, so you’re not gonna get massive changes in demographics right away. It’s hard for people to give up on something that was such a big part of their life. But the overall trajectory of HP definitely seems to be more of a downward facing parabola, since the former expected growth has a huge damper on it now. But yeah, we should probably just keep this discussion off the LOTR forum, since it’s off topic from the point of the forum. Quote
RichardGoring Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 I think that if they did Minas Tirith it would likely be the Citadel/top level with the hall, courtyard, white tree, and outcrop. Maybe raised a few bricks off the ground to give a sense of the height, but not much more than that. It would allow you to do detailed minifig (ish) scale elements and yet would still be very large and imposing. The Ideas sets trying to show the levels of Minas Tirith just don't work for me. They lack the detail and interest that you'd want from a set of that size and the figures look totally out of place. Yes, it's a shame not to have the ability to do the siege and play elements that come with it. But it would just be far too large to get everything in at something approaching minifigure scale. If they did it, I suspect it would be like Hogwarts at nanofigure scale, as you could get a decent balance between presence and detail. Quote
Balrogofmorgoth Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Minas Tirith could be done several different ways. You’ll never get the full city with an accurate shape and scale without it being a huge D2C with a very high price tag, which I’m fine with and would buy for sure. It can also be done with a couple different play scale sets, each depicting different scenes. One for the gates and outer wall with Grond or something, with some city interior, one with the upper levels and the courtyard, tree, and citadel. Maybe another set could focus more on the interior of the city. Maybe there could be a Gondorian soldier battle pack with a section of wall that you could add on, and make it bigger. There are a lot of possibilities and I’m sure lego is clever enough to come up with a way to do it that works Quote
MAB Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Even if they are opposed to individual small sets, putting together different parts of the city in one large combined set still works for me. Quote
