I am not talking money but how do you rate it compared to other lego sets you own or wish to buy? I am into modulars but don’t love the Jazz Club such that I am considering skipping it and selling an old bnib modular I have to cover the cost of Rivendell. Actual or hypothetical lego maths: what set would you trade or deprioritize to get this one? Depends on the set. For modular buildings, yes. Star Wars system sets, yes. UCS, probably not. Quote

I think it is on the same level of worth and epicness as the medieval blacksmith and the castle in the forest, probably my two favorite sets. I would probably be willing to give up most of my Star wars sets and minifigs to get it. Even though I'm a huge classic castle fan, I won't be getting the Lion knights castle, while I'll definitely get Rivendell at some point, even with the massive cost. Quote

I think the only sets I wouldn’t sell/trade (hypothetically) for it would have been the UCS imperial shuttle or UCS AT-AT if I owned either. I am prioritizing Rivendell over the AT-AT though. the shuttle and some hobbit sets are the only ones I regret not buying when I had the opportunity before they retired. I also would not sell or trade any of the old LOTR sets as LOTR is my favorite Lego theme. Quote

Replace Frodo with Rosie as he's already gone to the undying lands and Sharkey wouldn't be Saruman (though I'm not sure who'd be a good replacement) and we can have our four main hobbits go on a little adventure, to see the others in Rivendell or something and then come back to the shire being devastated and then have to unite the hobbits against Sharkey using the skills they learned from their adventures to save Thier home. A children of Hurin duology would be good also though I'm not how I'd want them to approach the incest, avoiding entirely removes some of the tragedy of Turin but I kind of want them to remove it anyway, it'd only lead to GoT comparisons anyway despite being entirely different. That Scouring of the Shire idea is great. I don’t think WB even has the rights to the Children of Hurin though. 1 hour ago, Arjo said: Hi everyone, in case this belongs to another forum then please disregard, I am curious what Rivendell is worth to you? Arjo Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Interesting thoughts! A certain youtuber placed Rivendell and 2.5 modulars (AS and BS if I remember correctly) side by side. They have about the same footprint but not the same visual impact at all. I remember seeing ME cantina at the store and thinking it was absolutely perfect but I didn’t see enough volume to justify the price. I eventually bought it from a third-party retailer at 250 and still felt it was dear. Last Summer, another mental barrier went down when FOMO got the best of me and I bought the 10305 castle (w/ forrest hideout gwp). But now we’re talking even more money, a so so gwp to be kind to it, but the most beautiful set of the three aforementioned imo. TLG is a master at resetting our perception of value. I remember coming out of my dark ages and thinking that 100 (your currency) set was hard to justify… but this time I feel I must trade some of my sets away to make it acceptable to splash on the big LOTR come back. ps: I looked at the ebay prices for helm’s deep, makes Rivendell look like a bargain:) Quote
neithan Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 No FOMO here, I`ll wait for a good GWP and double VIP points, then Rivendell will be much more attractive. ;-) Quote
Arjo Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 If only I had a Rex minifigure to sell (or more likely keep as my precious:) ). Funnily enough, TLG pay for licenses to attract purchasers but for me it is the exact opposite: Rivendell is the latest example of a set that has me cover source material in-depth so I can better enjoy it. I blame lego for turning me into a fan of media that had never reached me before (I live under a rock, I know). Quote

Tolkien's universe is such a great and wonderful place. Hopefully they make more LOTR sets. I have most of the Hobbit and LOTR sets, missed out on orthanc, the ship, Dol Guldur and the battle of the five armies sets. Definitely getting Rivendell at some point maybe the when it comes out the 5th. Quote
Alegrispa Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 (edited) Hey, so those movie news are pretty exciting! Not because of the potential movies themselves (honestly who gives a sh*t) but because this could be great news for LEGO Lord of the Rings! I hope Warner Bros pump all the money into those (though who knows with that cheap b*stard Zaslav) and LEGO gets dragged along with a big wave of proper sets! Still gonna be a couple of years, but still. Edited February 24, 2023 by Alegrispa Quote
Eurolock Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 Ahead of getting the Rivendell set I started watching Fellowship again tonight. I noticed that, in the initial staging shot of the council of Elrond scene, the circular tower (with the statues around the perimeter) actually appears to be a partial ruin that completely lacks the entire top half and roof depicted in the Lego model. The design of the top section actually appears to be from another tower that is visible some way off in the background. Not sure how I feel about the difference here? In some ways it seems odd to deviate from the source material since so much else about the set is highly accurate. On the other hand a ruined tower in Rivendell does seems like a somewhat out of character with the rest of Rivendell - and the change that has been implemented does make for a more visually striking (and more beautiful) set. Also, I guess it would be very easy to modify it to more accurately reflect the ruined tower if that is what someone wanted to do. Quote
Arjo Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 To Zoth, I have watched the first two LOTR movies, third and last one today. I am also finishing the first book. Not sure if I should move on to RoP or the Hobbit trilogy after that (yes I have read the many thoughts about each so brace myself for less though I am pretty easy). Back to the set, what I like the most about it are all the angles/lines of sight offered by the overall architecture. I find it very immersive, and versatile with the sections that can be separated. This will make for very nice lego pictures, and story telling, as things are moved around, looked from one angle or another, adding (temporarily) a few bits here and there to enhance the experience of play/day-dreaming/picture taking. Whomever dabbles into stopmotion will also have a field day with this one. Quote

In terms of reading I'd read the Hobbit first the Lord of the Rings, then the others. Quote
Arjo Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 Thanks, will do that. The first two movies are long but felt a bit rushed to me so I went to the books and I am in the process of discovering everything that was left out of the movies or lego sets. I saw Rivendell at the store this morning (again), I wanted to see if the library was truly meant to be removable to get access to the hidden crawl space. The video I watched where this was done made it sound like an untold play feature when in fact I do not think it is by design/made to be. I also have tried to feel my way to a couple more cmf orcs, they dont have the LOTR likeness but still it’s better than no orcs at all. Quote

Khargeust Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 I must also admit that LEGO has a lot to do with my renewed interest in Tolkien's universe. As a child I had discovered it with the release of the Peter Jackson films, I was marked forever by these movies, especially the first one. Then the miniatures to paint and play from Games Workshop, and the books of course... The announcement of a possible big LEGO set a few months ago increased the excitement since I had missed the sets released ten years ago. And since Rivendell's reveal, that's all I think about! I watched all the episodes of the Rings of Power series which I found to be okay. No longer having the books, I ordered The Hobbit yesterday to read it again and get back into the mood. With the announcement of future projects related to the agreement between Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema I'm more excited than ever that this encourages LEGO to release sets from Tolkien's universe! Quote
Arjo Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 Thanks, yes the Rivendell set has sent me down the rabbit hole, it helps that getting source books and dvds is so much cheaper than lego! Being an avid "consumer" of all things lego online (social networks, forums), I have found a bit sad that even the most impressive sets seem to fade into collective memory (or at least from the conversation) so fast because of supposedly "bigger better" sets coming in close succession. If I get around to getting Rivendell, I want to be able to enjoy it longer than the online hype and the source material will help me do just that. Quote
hikouki Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 Two years ago, I set about collecting all those LOTR lego sets that I missed out on. Very painful on my wallet. I never got around to opening and building them though because I quit my job and was moving places for the past two years. Finally, I am getting settled, and looking forward to getting this Rivendell set! However, just realizing how much those unopened sets may now be worth, makes me have so much second thought at actually opening and building them! LOL Quote
JeanGreyForever Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 I'm a very casual LOTR fan, unlike with Harry Potter or Star Wars. The Rivendell reveal inspired me to rewatch the movies, mainly the Hobbit movies because I had only seen them once before and wasn't really a huge fan. This time I'm watching the extended editions of the Hobbit movies and I already feel they're much better than the theatrical editions. Will rewatch the extended LOTR movies afterwards, especially to compare the depiction of Rivendell in them to the Lego set. I don't see myself watching Rings of Power though. I've heard too many negative things about the show and the fact that it has no basis in the books and breaks a lot of the canon doesn't appeal to me. That, plus the lack of any major A-list actors. I'm not sure how the movies were able to get so many big stars but the show is full of virtual unknowns who don't seem charismatic onscreen at all. I'm looking forward to seeing what we get from WB with more movies though. Quote

It was obviously made to appeal to more than just hard-core LOTR fans and thus some hard-core fans have made it their role to put off anyone else watching it. Think back to the original sets, there was a vocal minority complaining about many of those. Weathertop was too small, the Mines of Moria was just a bit of wall and doorway, Uruk-Hai Army was just a little bit of wall, Shelob had no cave, the Council of Elrond was too small, the Black Gate was half a set, Wizard Battle was unnecessary if you have Orthanc, and then there was that ship. If you listened to the negative reviews of the time, you would not have bought them. Quote

Even Amazon realised that (even though they certainly saved a lot of money in the casting department). Yeah this makes sense as well, it all depends on how the new sets will be executed (if Lego really restarts the theme). I now need to check if my Star Wars childhood sets (with the yellow heads) are worth anything haha Quote
