IC SCOURGE M-18

:: The major portion of the cavalry near the woods edge and Scourge pulls his mount around to glare back at the battle lines ::

No pursuit at all. Very telling. It seems the outcome of this skirmish has bore more useful information then I had hoped.

:: Scourge signals for the cavalry to stay put and rides closer to the Skeleton lines where he gives a terse order ::

"Ignite the Inferno Cavalry!"

:: Several skeleton archers extract themselves from hiding and target the distant black Inferno Cavalry with flaming arrows. Letting fly, the arrows zip straight and true, striking the tar and pitch covered skeletons and horses. The mounted troopers flare up into horrifying torches of burning death. With soul rending battle cries they turn around and head right back towards the Crown forces, fiery wakes trailing behind ::

(M, 18) Eastern Outpost, Scene of Crown Knight Victory

Teythar Lag approached Edthgar and Tyrius as they were interrogating an Orc. Teythar dismounted, and stood still for a few moments, and then pulled Edthgar over to the side, away from the rest of the group.

"Greetings." Teythar said, "I am Teythar Lag, Steward of Vineland."

"Hello," Edthgar introduced himself, "I'm the lord of the Eastern Outpost. How may I help you, Teythar?"

Teythar took a long, deep breath.

"Vineland has been the site of repeated intrusions by the undead. We need help; hostilities have already insued. Several villagers have been killed, and the undead are ravaging our fields and livestock! I'm wondering if you could send down any of your men to help us protect Vineland. It is less than a day travel to the south of here."

"Can't you send for reinforcements from the capital?" Edthgar asked.

"We already have!" Teythar answered, "All they sent is a single knight. That is why I'm asking you. Please, send us men!"

Teythar waited for Edthar's response.

Q-10, Monkey Trouppe Inn

Smoke curled up from Bran's pipe. That's some of the best tobacco I've had in days, he thought to himself. He was waiting for Tobias, his employer, his brother in arms and above all, his best friend. They had been through a lot ever since the first day Bran joined up with Tobias' merry band of mercenaries. They had built up quite the reputation over time, they were know as top-knotch merchandise, some of the best around, well worth their price.

The pub was full of commoners, many of them stopped by at the Inn after a hard day of work at the wharfs of the city, and bohemian lifestyled, lower class artists. Just the kind of people Bran liked. Straight to the point, none of the fancy manners the snobbish nobles have. It was starting to get late, where was Tobias at?

Finally, the door of the pub was opened and closed again fast. A man stepped in tightly grasping his hat and pulling his blue duster closely around him. A storm was raging outside. The weather had been this bad for about a week, so the company of mercenaries was stuck in Saint-Martin.

The man stepped towards the table Bran was at and took a seat. He took of his hat and shook his head. Rain drups flew all over the place.

"Quite the storm out there, ain't it, lad?"

"Sure is. What kept ya, by the way?" Bran asked.

"Nothing serious, don't worry about it"

"So, Toby, did you manage to get the contract?"

"I sure did, look like we're back in business"

"Let's discuss it over a good glass of beer" Bran said and smiled while gesturing at a waitress.

Siloux has retreated fast to the Crown Castle. So, it was, his plan was ruined, only because he could not get in. He sighed and took his horse to drink, and some water for himself. Afterward, he found a a small, grassy green hill. He took his horse there and laid in the grass.

You've done well my companion, let's sleep now, for we are tired, no? Yeah...

And he slept...

IC JORUND HÂTIEÉCRÈDE 20-N

:: Jorund had been wandering for days. At some point during the Skeleton and Vampire attacks he had been separated from the group. He had picked his way back to the shore, but the ship had been put to the torch, and now he was stuck, all the way across the continent from his home. He headed steadily westward, slowly through the dismal swamps and twisted forests, trying his best to avoid Skeleton patrols and other vile things that inhabit the undead lands.

Jorund checks his direction against the sun once again, remembering the lines on the crudely sketched map in his pack. He was headed either towards the Dwarf Kingdom, or the Elf Kingdom. Neither race would be particularly welcoming to an outsider, much less a Viking...but they would far outstrip the hospitality of the Undead, that much was certain ::

L7 Dragons Keep; Lord Dragonator's Chambers

Dragonator looked up from his saddlebags, quickly stuffing a small wrapped object into the bottom of it.

Ah, Adym, come in, take a seat. How can I help you?

Adym strolled into the room, and leant against the chair.

No need for me to sit, my Lord, as I shall be brief. I have some rough plans drawn out, with some areas gone into detail, along with some descriptions explaining how it all works.

Adym pulled up the chair and sat down anyway.

Right now I was wanting to test out some methods I've been thinking about, but, well, I don't have anything to work with. I was wondering if you have the resources I shall need for this, or if there's a scrap yard or siege workshop around here. I have some plans for an automated fluctuating hinge design, but I plan to make a much smaller scale model to see if it even works... Anyhow, I just need to know where I can work on the practical side of this project, as well as where to get resources.

Also, and this thought just popped to mind now, do you think it's safe to have my papers openly on my desk? It's not likely someone will wander into my room and look at the plans, is it? Should I keep them hidden somewhere, or perhaps I could carry them around with me in my satchel, stated Adym, lifting his arm to reveal a small pack at his waist strapped to a rope hanging from his shoulder. (OOC: Think Indy's 'man-purse' bag. BIC:) I do have this key to my room, but if someone were to bypass the lock, it may be best for me still to hide the papers. Or am I being far too paranoid here? I'm not acquainted to the type of people here, I know back where I lived I always carried my valuables with me, or hid them, and locked up every time I went for a walk.

Dragonator sat, looking at Adym in increasing horror. Please tell me you did not just leave your papers on your desk? This castle has some very extreme political currents, if the wrong person were to see those, then it could jeopardize my plans. Best to keep them on you at all times. I am happy you have made a start however. I can have materials made avaliable to you, and a space to work in. Below the castle are the dungeons and storage areas. There is a room down there where I have collected a certain amount of resources. It has a pair of cellar doors up a ramp, so if you have anything big, then bring it in through there. They are well hidden on the other side, and nobody ever goes down that far into the castle usually. But keep it locked at all times, even when you are there. Here is the key to the room, I hold the other copy. Do not lose it, your life could possibly depend upon it. Grim will show you down there when you are ready. Was that all?

Meanwhile, in Councilor Scorpia's chambers...

Council Scorpia sat in his large, plush armchair. You are certain that is what you saw?, he questioned the Shadow.

Most certain, he grated. And it appears to re-enforce what I heard him talking of in the dragons little corner.

Indeed. It appears I will need to act soon. I have a task for you...

The Shadow listened, attentively.

It shall be done. He will not stand a chance...

Tyrius watched as the flames erupted around them, he pulled the Orc towards him and got Thorius and three guards to haul the Orc off outside the inferno, "Blasted Undead" This was probably why Scourge was feared, he was an excellent fighter and tactician. "Pull back, get the water wagon and flatten the fires!" he called to the nearest Dwarves, and started helping Edthgar's men to douse the nearby flames, the gate's wood creaked and shuddered with the fire's blazing influence.

"You! Get the rest of the column and douse the flames on the gate!" the Dwarf nodded and sprinted off.

:: The Inferno Cavalry continue to burn and hack their way through anyone outside the the safety of the outpost walls. As for the outpost itself, flames lick up the walls following oil trails from the previous attack, and the gate is a burning and steaming mess. The fire weakens the thick wood doors only slightly, not nearly enough for the ten blazing troopers to break through. Efforts by the defenders to douse the flames are making progress, but the burning undead are relentless and the only thing more deadly then their fire, is the fear they are spreading ::

Whew, whispered Adym, I have to be more careful. However I am getting quite tired. I'll rest for a while, then get back to the building. Or rather, start the building. But first...

Adym slipped the key out of his pocket and locked the door. He then gathered up his papers, rolling them up and sticking them in his satchel.

There, now everything's safe and sound. And with that, Adym lay on the bed, getting all the rest he needed for the next day...

Crown Castle

Aluvar's Chambers

So, it would seem that there is intrigue afoot.

Intrigue? It's a full scale war!

And we're right in it's path!

And you're getting us involved!

AGAIN! Don't you remember what happened last time???

Ah yes, good times, good times indeed.

WHAT? You nearly got us all killed!

Oh, you're exaggerating.

YOU NEARLY GOT US KILLED THREE TIMES!!!

Yes, well, it wasn't all that close.

I've still got the scar.

Pish-posh, that's from that barmaid's parrot in Narkeep.

Haha, I remember her, she really let you have it.

Yeah...

Not like that! She bit you.

Yeah...

Oh, stop that.

All of you stop it, this is a serious conversation.

Just then, Grandoth enters the room.

Sorry to interrupt, but I knocked and no one heard me.

I heard you.

You could have said something.

I did.

Not about him knocking.

Well, no.

We're doing it again.

Doing what again?

It.

Yes, we are.

Are we?

QUIET!

Hello lad, are you all packed for the trip?

Oh yes, I've laid in some supplies and prepared the horses. The carriage has been checked out and I'll have some extra weapons aboard. We're as ready as we can be, considering where we're going.

Do you know where we're going?

No, but I figure it can't be good.

That's a lad, thinking logically. I like that. Why don't you head down and get some breakfast, I'll be along in a minute.

Oh, that sounds great, I'm starving!

Grandoth leaves quickly.

There is a knock at the door. A cloaked figure enters and sits on the edge of the bed.

Are you all ready then?

The figure nods.

Good. You should be able to stow aboard the carriage amongst the supplies. Don't make a sound, you can't be discovered until we're a good distance away.

The figure nods again.

Go on, before anyone sees you.

The figure leaves.

I can't believe you're doing this.

I don't have any choice.

After a short breakfast, Aluvar, Grandoth and the birds board the carriage on their way to far off lands, with more supplies than Grandoth expects.

Sausages!

:: After days of nothing but the smell of dead and evil things, the faint wisp of real food being cooked struck Jorund like a thunderbolt. It was also a sure sign that the Dwarf lands lay ahead. Jorund continued on, certain that once he neared the border, he'd encounter a dwarf patrol. He would have to be cautious. ::

Lord Kenneth moved slowly into the depths of “Green Valley”. The surroundings is quiet, too quiet. “My Lord, my vision is getting blurred.” One of the archers said to Lord Kenneth and he replied “The fog must be catching up on us. The feeling is very chilling and unbearable. His archers sensed it too.

IC GRYM LOCKE Q-10

:: The doors to the Monkey Trouppe Inn fly open with a crash. Framed in the doorway is a knight wearing severe and bulky armor, a collection of plates that looks as if it takes superhuman strength just to stand up in. He looks around, rain running in rivulets off his gruesome helmet. A derisive snort come from the black mouth grille and the figure stalks forward, his heavy footfalls clanking uncomfortably through the inn. After a moment, a voice is barely heard issuing from the helmet. ::

Outskirts of Castle Kwiras

Coming out of a small forest into a clearing

ALUVAR! COME UP! QUICK!

Wha... what is it lad?

Aluvar looks out the top of the carriage and sees a small band of skellies no more than 300 yards ahead.

Well. It was bound to happen, but I didn't expect it here.

Do we engage them, or try to make a run for it?

If we run, they'll only report back to their commander, giving us more trouble down the road. Prepare for battle.

Excellent!

Don't get cocky.

Grandoth hops down from his seat and tosses his cloak aside, revealing his full armour, which he completes by retrieving a helmet from under the seat. Drawing his sword, he calls out a taunt to the skellies, which seems to get their attention. They begin moving toward the carriage.

If that's all you've got on your bones, no wonder the dogs are starving!

Was that really the best taunt you could come up with?

Like you could do better.

He could.

I could.

Do it then!

Fine, give me a second.

Oh, this is going to be good, I just know it.

Glannath huredon, mastrichka flargnabble!

The skellies, understanding exactly what Pinky had said, become furious and rush toward the group. At 100 yards out, they begin to fire arrows which bounce harmlessly off Grandoth's shield.

Well, I don't know what that means, but they did.

It's hard to translate, but it has to do with their parentage, slime, and a dog.

Oh. I'll have to remember that one.

Just then, a second band of skellies comes out from the forest behind the carriage.

ALUVAR! More of them! Behind us!

Yes, I see.

I'm going to need some help here.

Fortunately, help is here. You may come out now, it is time.

The cloaked figure steps out of the carriage, startling Grandoth.

Who is that? No one was supposed to come with us!

Actually, my boy, it was my idea, and quite a good one, don't you think?

That depends a lot on who it is.

With a flourish, the figure tosses their cloak aside, revealing the fully armoured form of Princess Alyssta.

She shouldn't be here! This is madness!

We're doomed!

Oh, shut up.

Don't worry about me, just take care of that band approaching from the front, I've got the back ones.

Of course, Princess.

The two charge off into battle, making quick work of the skellies. As Grandoth returns to the carriage, he sees Princess Alyssta, reclining in his seat.

What took you so long?

Grandoth and Alyssta exchange a bit of playful banter, forgetting just who they are and their relative positions for a moment. Grandoth removes his helmet and places it back under the seat of the carriage.

We, really showed them, huh! Grandoth slaps Alyssta on the back, nearly knocking her over.

I'm sorry, Princess, I should show proper respect. I need to remember my place.

Putting every ounce of force behind it, Alyssta throws a punch that knocks Grandoth off his feet.

As long as we're travelling together, as long as we're fighting side by side, I expect you to think of me as another knight, not a Princess, not some weak woman. For this trip, I am just another soldier in the squad, your equal, no better or worse. Do you understand me?

Rubbing his chin, Grandoth glances up. Don't worry, I won't forget, and I certainly won't make the mistake of thinking that you're weak. Admiring the way her armour fit, Grandoth couldn't quite forget that she is definitely a woman.

And my friends call me Alyss.

Oh, I, thank you... Alyss.

Now get up, we've got to make up for lost time.

Yes sir! I mean, ma'am, I mean, Princess, er, um, aaaaaaaahhhh. :hmpf:

Everyone shares a much needed laugh as they reboard the carriage and approach the front gate of Castle Kwiris.

Castle Kwiras - Front Gate

A lone soldier has been given the unfortunate assignment of standing guard while others watch from the ramparts.

I'm sorry, sir, but we can't allow anyone to pass, there are invaders in the area.

I know, we just killed them. Well, whatever it is you do to skellies.

Yes sir, and that's all well and good, sir, but my orders are clear.

Aluvar steps out of the carriage, straightens his cloak, brushes his beard, and hands the guard a letter, without so much as a word.

Yes sir! I am very sorry sir! OPEN THE GATE!

Aluvar winks at Grandoth, reboards, and waits while they make the short trip into the castle courtyard. As the carriage stops again, Aluvar exits.

Come lad, we shall appraise Sir Kwiras of the situation, and after a nights rest, continue our journey fresh.

What about Alyss?

Shhh. She will stay with the carriage, we can't afford to risk her discovery. The birds will keep watch, if there is anything suspicious, they'll alert us.

She shouldn't be here at all!

Quiet! This letter states that for so long as it is necessary, I am to be considered the voice of the King. His words come from my lips. You will never question my decisions!

I never thought you'd pull rank on me. :sceptic:

Aluvar chuckles. Listen, it isn't like that, it's just that this is a serious situation and I need you not to doubt me.

I don't, I just worry for her safety.

As do I. I was like a second father to her. The matters of the crown kept Tiberius busy and she grew up always wanting his attention, but never receiving it. She was a strong girl, a smart girl, but she needed guidance and direction. One day, I found her going through the books in my chambers. She explained that she was bored with her studies and wanted something new to learn. I spent many hours teaching her of the world, telling stories of my life. I love her like my own daughter. I won't let anything happen to her.

So why is she here?

Because she wasn't safe in Crown castle. There have been a few odd 'accidents' and 'illnesses' in recent times, occurances that I believe were to set the stage for this invasion.

A traitor in the castle?

Oh yes, most certainly.

After a short meeting with Sir Kwiras followed by a quick meal, Aluvar and Grandoth are taken to their chambers where they retire for the evening.

Jorgis looked at the Viking, "Aye" he said politely "And what are ye doing in Dwarf Territory, Jorund. I am Jorgis Thunderhammer, steward of these here Mountains, put into place by Chief Tyrius Thunderhammer, no humans are to pass, lest ye have good reason", the Dwarf was curious as to what had happened to the Viking for him to be this far south. The Dwarf gave a hand signal and another in the patrol turned and took out a small crystal, signalling the closest Thunderhammers to stay near.

Jorgis noted the curious axe that Jorund had in his belt. He better not reach for it.

Jorgis nodded to another Dwarf, who, in turn ran off to the castle, using a hidden track that was known only to the Dwarven soldiers.

"You're in the wrong area, lest you be looking for a ship, the only ones we know of are far away. I think that since you people were raiding the Undead, I should show one such as you some hospitality, yet I warn thee, it would not be smart to follow the Mountain range near the other clans or the Elves, lest ye want to be killed on sight" Jorgis gave a look of incertainty and caution, when the Viking said 'most of my cohorts' Jorgis wondere dif this was an eleborate trap.

"Follow me, Jorund, we will reprovision you and you may stay one night in Ban's pointe, but I am sure that in return for our hospitality you hand over your weapons, lest they be used against us in the night, it is in return for provisions that we ask for your weapons, they will be handed back to you on the day of your leave" Jorgis said, not wanting to leave someone out in the mountain range at night.
