Technic Model Comparison

And I proudly present to you, the comparison of all Unimog-tyred models!

I don't include the Unimog cabin because it's gonna block the view of other models.

All models are aligned to their front axles. It's nice that all of them are 4x4 non-off-roaders.

In terms of wheel base length, from smallest to largest, the order is 42030 A -> 42030 B -> 42082 -> 8110.

I know that I am asking for much, but there is possibility, that someone has a Nico71's C model of 42082 and 42030 and can share a photo of them standing next to each other. Just like on the pictures above?

What should I do next? I'm thinking of a 8110 A vs 42054 A, and also 8110 B vs 42054 B.

Interesting thread. Since there are LDraw files available for every model (and many B-models), it is pretty easy to make comparison pictures without even owning the sets. In the beginning of Technicopedia, I took photos much as you are doing. I would line up all the cranes, for example, and snap a photo. There were several drawbacks to this:

You need to own all the models
You need to have all the models assembled
You need to have space not only to arrange them, but to get far enough back to take a photo and get them in frame
You need to repeat all of that every time a new model is added to the category

As time went on, it was no longer possible to take a photo that included all the models in a large group, so I switched to virtual pictures using LDraw. You might say this is cheating, but it does a good job of comparing all the sizes as long as you use the same camera for everything, and also makes it MUCH easier to add a new model. I owned all the models up to 2016 but don't have physical copies of anything since then.

42082 A vs 42082 B

The superstructure of 42082 B is mounted 2 studs forward compared to that of 42082 A.

Also, there are several differences in the rear of the two superstructures:

1. The middle switch in 42082 A can select forward or backward, but that in 42082 B can only open backward. The reason is that the stomping function only requires movement in one direction only.

2. The instruction stickers in 42082 A can't be reused in 42082 B, so the designer uses color codes instead. The red light stud is used to denote the winch, while the green light stud is used to denote the boom's pushing function.

3. The middle switch in 42082 B has a dedicated slot to go backward to.

4. Because of the walls of the slot, the engine cover opens forward in 42082 A, but backward in 42082 B.

5. The battery box cover opens upward in 42082 A, but detaches completely in 42082 B.

6. The two sides in 42082 B have different lengths. The one in the drive's side is one stud longer.

Aww, why you hatin' on 42080-B? Utility is the true essence of beauty. Those flippin' hoses in the boom just won't stay in place though... :facepalm:

Two generation of medium sized helicopters. 8068 B vs 42092. 8068 A is too similar to 42092, and I like the bubble canopy more.

The biggest improvement is the design of the winch. In 8068, when I swoosh it, there's a chance that the string will go backwards due to gravity and unspool. But that cant happen in 42092, which is a big plus.

Putting the rotor knob under the model also helps. In 8068, the knob is right under the rotor, so my hand can interfere with the blades. That doesnt happen in 42092.

regarding the H1 cars, i have all of those myself, yet i cant bring myself to put 42077 on display, it is just too damn ugly

42000 and 42039 were quite impressive at the time, and i really enjoyed messing around with them (both are modified), but compared to the Chiron, which i just added to the lineup, they suddenly seem insignificant, and im wondering if i shouldnt replace them with something more impressive.

I mean no disrespect by the following post. In fact, I think this thread is a great idea. It is one of the few that I actually took the time to look at all the pages and read the content! :sweet: Great to see the real-life comparisons of all the models.

However, if the purpose is to compare the models, a little more time and effort in the pictures would be nice. Most are pretty blurry by today's standards, and there is much clutter in the background. Most pictures one has difficulty distinguishing where one model begins and when the other ends. Defining boundaries of the sets is very difficult.

Perhaps it would be good to invest in a better camera. Doesn't have to be anything expensive. Nowadays, pretty much anything will at least take clear pics. Or for a no-cost solution, at least remove all the background stuff, and place like a white sheet or something as the background and floor. But overall, great idea of a thread. My recommendations only serve as a reflection of my interest in the post.

42039 was certainely an impressive design.

But not for good reasons.
