Hi Brickstorians,

For those that aren't aware, Bricklink is hosting an event called the "AFOL Designer Program".

Similar to Lego Ideas, entries are considered from AFOLs to build a set from all existing elements and the finalists will have their set put into a 'pre-order' phase.

During this phase, orders can be placed to help a set reach 100% funding.

The finalists have been chosen and I'm pleased to say that there's a Castle in there and it stands a *very* good chance of being produced, but we can all help by pre-ordering in February.

And here it is, Löwenstein Castle (by Raziel_Regulus):

You can find out more about the event and other finalists by visiting here.

You never know, Lego could be so amazed by support for this Castle that they re-ignite their own Castle line. We can hope, right?

I plan to pre-order! Who's with me?

@Marghal Just thought to tag you bud.

Thanks for posting this! It looks very interesting. The well and underground is so magical, but whats up with the handcuffs? I will definitely consider backing this.

$200 for the castle. It looks like BL has gone with 10c per part across all builds.

Woah, that's pricey. Does that include shipping internationally?

It does. But anyone in Europe will get hit with VAT plus other fees. For example, in the UK it currently translates to £153, but on top of that there will be another £30 VAT plus £8 for Royal Mail to collect the VAT. So about £190 all in. Compare that to the Corner Garage, £160 for 2500+ parts, and you can see that BL has  probably overpriced them for EU buyers.

Plus there was a fairly limited palette of parts that could be used, and the parts tend to be mainly quite basic ones.

I see. Thank you for the pricing info.

This is a hard sell for me then. I really really want to support it but that is a lot of money for a non-official Lego set.

@Aanchir What are your thoughts? Does the price change your view on it's value? It's 2000 pieces apparently.

Same.

I just felt like "If that is worth $200 what are my MOCs worth?".
It's a nice set don't get me wrong, but really? $200? THREE minifigures, loosely looking like castle ones?
No way Jose

I hoped they do not go the same way Lego is going for the pricetag. But they did. I can't back it because I have no credit card. I asked my friend who is also a big AFOL. He does also have no credit card.

Why the hack only this payment option??

Because otherwise it would be very hard to refund you if they don't meet the goal.

Ah. Ok. But do they not just draw money when they ship it?

This is it: to ensure that you are able to back the project, the money is pre-withdrawn from your creditcard. Which doesn't mean that you spent it.

Suppose you have $1500 per month, you now have $1300 because 200$ are ready should ever the product go in production phase.
But they do not withdrawn $200 from your account until the goal is achieved.
Once it is, the money goes and you restore your credit card monthly limit.

I was going to buy that set.
Saw the price.
Said nvm.

I feel the same. I just can't justify £190 to ship to the UK for a moc.

If the figures were half unique, maybe; but no.

It's a real pity because I so wanted to back this project. Luckily, it didn't need my backing.

In other news, welcome back @Itaria No Shintaku. Hadn't seen you in a while. Hope you're well.

As nice as the set is, in the donkeys opinion it is just to expensive. This will go up to some 250,- €, incl. VAT and duties when landed in Germany - for 2.000 pieces. 12,5 €ct per brick, w/o any license fees, 3 very simple minifigs - no thanks. The donkeys max. price is somewhere around 139,- €

It's sad but it's true...

I doubt the figures were ever going to be unique, as BL is not printing the parts. They are just getting a basic palette of parts from LEGO, then selling them on as these MOCs. LEGO isn't doing any special prints for them or anything like that. It looks like they've sold quite well though.

Yeah but the lady has a basic red torso. Couldn't they do better than that?

Maybe it was just existing parts from the currently produced assortment rather than any Lego part ever; not sure, but basic red is lack-lustre.

As mentioned by @MAB, the parts palette for minifigure elements was extremely limited. Mostly solid color torsos, legs, and very few head options too.
I don't believe there was a single suitable printed option for medieval figs.

Ah ok so not even the full assortment. Fair enough.

It's still too much regardless; which is a shame.

It wasn't even the currently produced parts. BL only made a subsection of current parts available, as they buy these in bulk from LEGO then sell them at the ~10c per part price.

I think it looks great, but does anyone know what the "exclusive" part is? All of them have one but show nothing about it.

BL is keeping that a secret until it's released.
