Posted May 12, 20195 yr As most of you will know by my signature, I am building a 1:16 model of an artic lorry which is almost complete. Before I create a new thread of my lorry (should be sometime next week), I just wanted to run something past you all just to make sure no one gets annoyed with me. My artic lorry contains multiple designs by other people including @Sariel and @2LegoOrNot2Lego.... For example my model contains the 4 speed sequential gearbox that was designed by Sariel. I already typed out the text for the thread and I have clearly stated which parts were designed by other people and added links to their website or Brickshelf page at the bottom of the post. I will not be making or releasing/selling any instructions for the cab unit. Therefore, is it acceptable for me to publish images and details of my model on here? Both from a forum rules point of view and from a community point of view. Sorry for posting what seems a stupid question but I just wanted to make sure so that my thread doesn't p*** anyone off. Thanks for any advice and sorry for wasting your time with a dumb question. Morgan P.S. Sorry if this has been asked before, I did do a quick search but came up blank. May 12, 20195 yr Every MOC has ideas of other people, I think is good to mention some of them like Sariel´s autovalve for example but without driving us crazy maybe even Sariel had the autovalve idea watching other people stuff or not I have no idea.
May 12, 20195 yr I don't know anymore. I share stuff like gearboxes etc to let other people use it, not to expect my nickname to be parroted around every application of those. I don't blame you for being skittish on the subject, lately the rightful use of "IP" is more important then Lego. I've just consulted my lawyer and he said it's ok to reply on this topic. He had a point though. A lorry has a lot of wheels and we still don't know who invented it. He recommended to use tracks instead. Sorry being sarcastic, it really isn't for you. I can't wait to see that rig. My sarcasm is aimed for those who think we do so serious stuff here, what even worth arguing about. We play lego (or build, whichever suits for you) and it all should be a big sharing community, where members contribute for fun, not for fame, or even worse.... But instead... (if I've finished this sentence, I'd make a lot of enemies, so I don't)  My lawyer told me not to... Just post it, mention the most inspirational sources, what you would do anyway as you came accross as a decent person, and it's done. At least in my ideal world where all knowledge is freely available for everyone. Â
May 12, 20195 yr I find it quite a strange thought that someone would willingly share detailed information about their designs and models, and then complain when people replicate the design on their MOCs, especially when it comes to things that merely perform a technical function (like a gearbox). Personally, it would feel more flattering than hurtful if someone replicated my design, as that would indicate that that they think I have done something actually useful and/or cool.
May 12, 20195 yr My goodness, all that "IP type stuff" is creeping in here as well - and I was so happy when I told my administration at work that I don't care anymore: When I believe something could be patentable I don't tell them, instead we publish that stuff. On the other hand … why not asking them für "permission"? Kindly? That will almost always do it. Plus, in most cases you will be offered help. Back in the days I motorized Ben Beneke's BR 23. Thought it could be of interest to the Train-heads an made instructions. But posted them here only after asking Ben for permission. He responded extremely friendly, offered help, told me things I did not know. It was a great experience. And when you can't track the original builders/authors down, mention the source/author/builder. Give a note that you could not get in touch with them. I bet - all builders active on this website, and most others - will be pleased to see their ideas/models being useful to others. Al the best Thorsten      Â
May 13, 20195 yr This is a good subject that really needed to be address. My understanding of the definition of the abbervation letters of  MOC, is called my own "creation" is The difference between something being created and something being made is that when something is created, it is brought into existence out of nothing. But, when something is made it has been formed out of something else that already exists and for I to named individuals to give them "a title or credit"of any mechanical devices has to be ;looked deeply and to be sure who is the original inventor before any one else and even if its made into different materials.. there is a true inventor in most cases and not often I find an original design and build but that;s normal.. it took a group of pepole in a given time frame to invent a car or a tv set and now it comes to artwork...  is it the artwork you admire or the invention?? Edited May 13, 20195 yr by sirslayer
May 13, 20195 yr As long as you don’t sell it, or try give away anything that was only available behind a paywall, and give credit where appropriate you’re fine. I wouldn’t even bother asking for permission to be honest. If A gets annoyed by getting credited in B’s MOC despite not having tried to make any money previously, I’d say A has bigger problems to deal with.
May 13, 20195 yr Author Thanks for all your advice. I have thought about what you said and I figured that where possible I should seek the permission of the designers of the parts I have used in my lorry, whether necessary or not, I felt doing so was a mark of respect and kindness to my fellow AFOL community members. I have contacted @Sariel and @2LegoOrNot2Lego... who both allowed me to use their designs in my model. LegoOrNot2Lego... asked if I could credit them which as stated in my original post, I plan on clearly stating who designed each part as well as providing links to their website. So a big thank you to Sariel and 2LegoOrNot2Lego for giving me permission. There is also one other person who designed parts of my lorry but I cannot find any direct contact details for. I will do some more digging on the interwebs to seek their permission. If I have no luck contacting them I will assume consent as they have released LDD files and images on their Brickshelf page of parts of their models. Other parts that they have not provided LDD files for I have reversed engineered and modified to suit my needs. Again I will, of course, credit them and provide links to their Brickshelf page. I will still try my best to contact them regardless. Thanks again for your advice. Edited May 13, 20195 yr by MxWinters
May 13, 20195 yr 1) if you don't want to be copied don't share 2) If you share and are copied, be happy, is says only good things about your designs 3) If after you are being copied you expect attribution... grow up and mature please, you aren't making a better world. Everyone learns from everyone. and even if some design is a verbatim copy of someone's else, there is no copyright to utility designs. there can be patents... but is anyone paying for that? No? Then it is free stuff. In my opinion In the end it is just a matter of being helpful. If you use some specific design and know who made it AND there is a guide or something out there a link can be helpful for those who want to use it too. But if there are no pictures, no instructions... nothing helpful to link... then I see no need. And I am not sorry If some ego gets hurt by someone not giving attribution. May 14, 20195 yr 4) If I share, copy away, don't waste time asking for permission. It's a combination of Lego pieces, not a cure to cancer.
